Batang BBL-UB of Batangas and ABC Ideas of Naga tied Energen-Pampanga for the Luzon leadership with their second straight victories recently in the Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League in several venues.
Joseph Elnar fired 14 points while John Arellano and Joseph Sangalang had 12 and 10 respectively when Batang BBL-UB beat Ulam King STC (0-2) for a first win in the under-18 tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.
The second win came shortly as Arellano tallied 12 points while Charles Valenzuela and Elnar had 10 apiece when Batang BBL-UB beat Smart-La Salle,67-58, in the tournament also supported by San Miguel Purefoods Company, Smart Communications and Burlington.
B-MEG SBC plucked its first win also at the expense of Ulam King-STC, 74-71, with the victors bannered by KR Panganiban’s 21 and David Panganiban’s 10 points also in Batangas City.
Farther south, ABC Ideas got its second win after the opening day by beating North Star (0-1), 62-58, in the game held at the Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU) gym. Bicol-based St. Joseph routed Little Adamsia, 73-39, for its first win and to deal its victim a first loss.
In Lucena City, QPL-Black bested QPL Red (1-1) with a 75-60 score for a first win while QPL-Blue-Karis team (1-0) beat Lucena City (0-1), 89-66.
The Nokia NBTC D-League is envisioned to be a feeder program for varsity squads and teams catering to leagues such as the UAAP, NCAA, Philippine Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association and the Liga Pilipinas.
From only 29 clubs, the league field has grown to 108 teams backed by commercial and local government units. The tournament will have an inter-city, regional and national finals, the latter of which is set in May at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
