Torrejas secures win for Liga cagers

Romeo Torrejas sanked the two gift shots to lift Liga ng Barangay over the City Executives, 97-95 in the 2008 Liga-Executive Basketball Series, Thursday night at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Gerald Acojedo fouled Torrejas in the last five seconds that sent the Barangay Captain to the free throw line. He comfortably made the shots to give Liga the lead in the series, three games to two.

Jessiemar Culaste led Liga with 24 points while city sports coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go topscored for the losing side with 32 points.

Primovit entries submission at Almendras gym, Ateneo has 15 teams

Ateneo de Davao is fielding in 15 squads and interested teams are requested to submit their entries for the Primovit Futures 3on3 Baller Battle on June 28 to 29 at the Gaisano South Sky gym.

Organizers announced on Wednesday that the forms are available at the Almendras gym and just look for Paras for the teams to join the two-day event.

Assumption College of Davao has 10 teams, Agro-Industrial Foundation College has two, Davao Christian has five squads and other schools will be beating the deadline on Friday.

Futures Sports and Events administrative assistant Doll de Guzman, consultant and coach Tyrone Limon and assistant coach Glen de Leon will be arriving in Davao on Thursday to check on the venues and personally handle the team screening.

Requirements for participation are copy of NSO birth certificates, waiver, parent's consent, two empty boxes of Primovit multivitamin capsules and P600 per team.

Prizes at stake are P7,500 for the champions and P5,000 for the second placers including gift items from AND1, trophies and medals.

CAGAYAN de Oro – Mark Yee displayed his valuable leadership to Pagadian late Sunday evening, posting a double-double in steering the Explorers to a spectacular comeback by blasting the Baguio Victory, 63-49, in the final of the maiden southern phase of Liga Pilipinas at the Xavier University gym here.

Yee had 15 points and 11 rebounds, getting adjudged Best Player of the Misamis Oriental leg.

Comparatively deficient in size but overflowing in aggressiveness, the Explorers controlled the boards, 45-36, and held the Victory, who trailed 17-7 and never recovered, to 28 percent from the floor (16-of-58).

Pagadian's defense also forced 17 Baguio turnovers.

In the battle for third place, local boy Eric de la Cuesta unloaded 18 points to lead the MisOr Meteors past the Trace Laguna Stallions, 82-77.

Meanwhile, at the People's Coliseum in Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur, the Cebu Ninos downed the host Bravehearts, 98-78, in the northern leg final.

Taguig, on the other hand, ripped Quezon, 79-68, for third place.

Armanz Ho's back-to-back shots ignited Plansterbank's run in the fourth quarter to defeat Citibank, 82-65 in the Banker's Cup 2008, Saturday, at the Evergold gym in Obrero.

Kim Villanueva, who led the team with 18 baskets, Arvin Leong, who added another 18, and Jonard Movilla led the scoring department to improve Planterbank's standing to four wins against three losses. Citibank absorbed its eighth setback.

In the other games, RCBC bested BDO, 88-79 for its fifth win in eight games while BPI stopped Metrobank, 90-80 for its seventh victory in eight games and protected its No.1 spot in the team standings.

Securitybank won by default over Enterprisebank, in the other game.

3 games in IBP-RRD cagefest on June 21

Three games are scheduled in the 2008 Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Basketball Tournament on Saturday, June 21, at the Hall of Justice covered court.

IBP White, known as the Chinos, takes on IBP Black Coca-Cola at 1:20 p.m., followed by COMELEC Region XI against the DCPO Officers Group at 2:45 p.m. while IBP Yellow faces the Bong Go-led City Government of Davao in the main game at 4 p.m.

The tournament is presented by Mayor Duterte and sanctioned by the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas XI under regional director Regino "Boy" Cua.

Futures 3on3 list up at Almendras gym

Registration is now going on at the Almendras gym, from 1 to 5 p.m. for the Primovit Futures 3 on 3 Baller Battle on JUne 28 to 29 at the Gaisano South Sky gym.

4 games in RRD-IBP cagefest on Saturday

Four games are set in the resumption of the 2008 Mayor Rodrigo Duterte-Integrated Bar of the Philippines Basketball Tournament on Saturday, June 14, at the Hall of Justice covered court.

ABS-CBN Davao meets COMELEC Region XI at 1:20 p.m., followed by IBP Coca-Cola against IBP Orange at 2:45 p.m.

IBP Lavender collides with the City Government of Davao at 4 p.m. while IBP Yellow battles the DCPO Officers Group in the main game at 5:25 p.m.

The tournament is presented by Mayor Duterte and sanctioned by BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Regino “Boy” Cua.

Panabo shades IBP White, 100-94 in RRD-IBP cagefest

Panabo Hall of Justice improved to two wins against five losses at the expense of IBP White, 100-94 in the main game of the 2008 Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Cup Basketball League, Saturday, at the IBP Hall of Justice covered court.

IBP White, a title contender, absorbed its second loss in seven games.

In the other games of the tournament presented by Mayor Duterte, the DCPO Officers Group leveled its count to 3-3 after winning over IBP Orange, 115-111, which dropped to 4-3 while IBP Coca-Cola stunned IBP Yellow, 116-115 for its fourth win against three losses. IBP Yellow suffered only its second setback in six games.

IBP Lavender won on the no-show of COMELEC Region XI for its second victory against five losses while the Election personnel chalked in its fourth loss against two victories.

Games will resume on Saturday, June 14.

Executives triumph over Legislators, 97-87

There’s no stopping the Executives again in Game 3 of the Executive-Legislative Basketball Tournament-16th Season with a 97-87 triumph over the Legislators, recently, at the Davao City Recreation Center.

The Executives exploited a disorganized Legislative squad to fuel a 62-35 advantage at the end of the first half.

The Legislators took their turn in the final half by outgunning the Executives, 27-13 in the third quarter but their rivals kept them at bay as Ariel Bonleon and Roy Bangkas combined for 15 points in the final canto.

City sports coordinator Christopher “Bong” Go led the Executives with 21 points and Bonleon and Bangkas helped with 18 points, apiece as the Executives posted a comfortable 3-0 lead in the series.

Culaste leads Liga past Executives, 102-96

Jessiemar Culaste topscored with 24 points to lead Liga ng Barangay past the City Executives, 102-96 to level their friendly basketball games series, 2-2, recently, at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Culaste sparked in the second half by scoring 17 of his 24 points while Arnold Apostol helped with 18 points .

The barangay leaders established an eight-point lead at the end of the first half and slowed down in the last canto as city sports coordinator Christopher “Bong” Go canned in 18 of his 40 points in the final stretch.

But Culaste and the rest of the leaders defended their lead to score the equalizer and Go, Gerard Acojedo, who contributed 18 points, city general services officer Marvin “Oying” Melodias, who pumped in 12 baskets, and lawyer Joey Felizarta, who drilled in 10 points, could no longer catch up with the Liga cagers as time expired.

IBP Lavender tastes first win, City continues win run

IBP Lavender tasted its first win in six games while the City Government of Davao continued its winning run in the 2008 Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Cup Basketball League, Saturday, at the IBP Hall of Justice covered court.


IBP Lavender stopped the DCPO Officers Group,111-97 and handed its rivals its third loss in five games while Bong Go, who scattered 45 points, and the City dribblers beat Panabo Hall of Justice, 111-98 for their fifth straight victory.


After a slow start in the first quarter with only eight points, Go went to a shooting spree, tallying in double figures from second (10 points), third (14 points) and fourth (13 points) quarters. Panabo dropped to a 1-5 win-loss slate.


IBP White, on the other hand, escaped with an 83-81 triumph over COMELEC Region XI to tally its fifth win in six games and the Election cagers leveled their count to 3-3 win-loss card.


IBP Orange shut down ABS-CBN Davao, 84-78 for its fourth win against two losses while the Shrine Hills-based dribblers absorbed their fifth loss in seven outings.

Futures 3-on-3 Baller Battle set in Davao

The Futures 3-on-3 Baller Battle in Davao is all set on June 28 to 29, according to organizers.
The elimination round on the first day will be at the Davao Christian High School along Mapa Street while the final day will be played at the Sky Gym of Gaisano South Citimall in Ilustre.
There will be four divisions this year namely, boy's mini (born 1997 and younger), midgets (born 1994 and younger), juniors (born 1991 and younger) and girl's juniors (born 1991 and younger).
Team composition is a minimum of three and maximum of four players per team.
Squads are required to submit a copy of birth certificates issued by the National Statistics office, parent's consent, waiver, two empty boxes of Primovit multivitamin capsules and P600 registration fee.
Participants will receive a Futures Baller playing shirt and giveaways.
The champion will win P7,500 and P5,000 for the second placers plus gift items.
