Coca-Cola, Rain or Shine slug it out on Wednesday

Game on Wednesday
(Ynares Center-Antipolo)
7 p.m. – Coca-Cola vs Rain or Shine

Coca-Cola, powered by a solid frontline led by Asi Taulava and Dennis Espino, and Rain or Shine, boasting of a talented backcourt tandem, slug it out on Wednesday's night in the final knockout stage of the KFC PBA Philippine Cup wildcard round at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
The Tigers and the Elasto Painters clash in a lone game at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals against the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants.
Meanwhile, the PBA will be giving free tickets for tonight’s match through its “Barkada Mo Sagot Ko” special promo. The limited offer entitles a group of three for every purchase of one ticket at the gallery section and two seats for a purchase of one ticket at lower level.
Expect a down-to-the-wire battle between Coca Cola and Rain or Shine with both teams hoping to stay in contention in the all-Filipino tourney.
“We will definitely fight for the win. We’ve gone this far enough to deserve a quarterfinals seat. Rain or Shine is a tough opponent but we are prepared for them,” said Coca-Cola coach Bo Perasol.
“This is our only chance to make the quarters. We’ll give it our best shot,” said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia.
While it will be a question of execution, the two coaches believe a key factor is which team gets to impose its game.
The Tigers thrive on a deliberate halfcourt game with their plays revolving around big men Taulava and Espino while the Elasto Painters draw much energy on the run-and-gun games of guards Sol Mercado and Gabe Norwood.
JayR Reyes and Mark Telan will have tough job cut out for them against Taulava and Espino.
Gary David and Chris Ross, meanwhile, are the two players likely to be paired with Mercado and Norwood.
“I’m excited to battle with Mercado and Norwood. It’s a tough assignment but I’ll be ready,” said David, after an explosive performance leading Coke past his former team Burger King Wednesday.
Coca-Cola is the slight pick, having a better showing in the elimination round capped by a three-game romp on the return of Taulava from a foot injury.
The two teams split their elims games with Rain or Shine winning their first encounter, 92-84, while Taulava was out in sickbay.

RP-Smart Gilas to take a month's breather

THE recent Dubai stint of the RP-Smart Gilas team is just the start of what will be a hectic schedule this year for the Asian Games bound national squad.
Returning from the oil-rich emirate two days ago where they placed third in the tough 21st Dubai International basketball tournament, the Nationals are going to take just a month's breather before plunging back into action by March when they travel to Australia to play a series of games with teams from the National Basketball League (NBL).
From Down Under, Serbia will be the Nationals next stop where they are scheduled to play some of the local club teams in an attempt to benchmark the squad's development exactly a year after traveling to the same European country for a series of tune up games as well.
By April, the team is off to the U.S. in Las Vegas and Canada in Vancouver to play the Canadian national team in a couple of exhibition games, followed by its campaign in the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Doha, Qatar in May.
The Nationals will be back in Manila on June, where arrangements to play the national teams of Iran, New Zealand and either Korea or Japan will be made, before capping their preparation for the Asiad by participating in the annual Jones Cup in Taipei (July), the Stankovic Cup in Lebanon (August) and back to the U.S to battle a select team from the NCAA.
Come November, the RP team is off for the Asiad in Guangzhou, China.
"This is definitely a hectic year for the Smart-Gilas team. In all, we expect to play around 80 international games," bared Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Noli Eala in the PSA Forum Tuesday at the Shakey's U.N. Avenue branch.
"All of these trips are fantastic exposures for our national team."
Handled by Serbian coach Rajko Toroman and headed by team captain Chris Tiu, both of whom also appeared in the session presented by Outlast Battery, PAGCOR, Accel and Shakey's, the RP squad however, would be competing without the benefit of American reinforcement Jamal Sampson, who may be on his way out with the team following a lackluster showing in the Dubai meet.
Toroman himself expressed disappointment with the way the injury-prone American, cousin of former Houston Rockets star Ralph Sampson, played with the team, stressing what the Smart-Gilas squad needs is a "guy who would play with passion, a guy who would play with intensity and someone who wants to play."
Eala added he was to meet with Sampson and national team manager Frankie Lim late yesterday to discuss the fate of the American.
"There's no doubt, Jamal has all the skills we need for a big man, someone who can get rebounds and defend against the big guys from the other teams.
But in fairness to Jamal, he already talked with me about his place in the team. And I think it would be mutually beneficial for everyone where we can all move forward," Eala said.
The SBP official admitted no other prospects are being eyed to take the place of the 6-foot-11 Sampson, although Tiu added the team is just a good big guy away from being at par with the best of Asia.
"We still need to beef up our big guys. Definitely we need a strong force in the middle to get rebounds and wreck havoc at the defensive end.
"But despite falling short in the end (of the Dubai tournament), the result was very fulfilling because we were able to prove that we can compete with the best in Asia," said the RP team captain.

Davao kids discover Jr. NBA basketball; gear up for regional selection camp on March 14

One hundred and five Davao kids from public and private schools showed up for the tryouts of the Jr. NBA Philippines presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins at Holy Child School in Jacinto, Davao City on January 22.

The kids underwent a series of drills and skills challenges from Coach Frank Lopez, the US Jr. NBA coach that introduced the program here when it was launched in the summer of 2007. They also learned about values that would transform them from kids who simply liked basketball to outstanding basketball players who were good inside and outside of the hard court.

“Pledge to be a S.T.A.R.!” Coach Frank told the kids. S.T.A.R. stands for the core values of the Jr. NBA Program : Sportsmanship, Teamwork, a positive Attitude and Respect.

Coach Frank also introduced the kids to a new Jr. NBA experience -- the Jr. NBA Skills Stations -- which posed five basketball challenges : the Hi-Smart Lay Up Station where participants should make as many lay-ups as possible within 45 seconds; the Gatorade Shooting Station where the objective is to make as many of the total 10 baskets within 1 minute; the Basketball TV Passing Station where one should make as many of the total 25 passes, including bonus passes – given a 10 second limit per set of passes; the Hi-Smart Dribbling Station where one must complete the course as quickly as possible while maintaining control of the ball; and the Mitsubishi Footwork Station where players make defensive slides around a designated area.

“It’s all about learning and having fun, but willing to work very, very hard,” Coach Frank said.

At the tryouts, representatives from Hi-Smart Multivitamins, the presenter of the Jr. NBA Philippines Program for the third consecutive year, and Jr. NBA partner Gatorade emphasized the importance of proper nutrition and hydration to the development and performance level of young cagers.

Officials from the local Department of Education (Ms. Ma. Antonia P. Diaz, DepEd Assistant Schools Division Superintendent and Jimmy H. Cerojales, DepEd Physical Education and School Sports Division Supervisor) attended the first school tryouts of the Jr. NBA in the City of Davao and pushed the young Davaoeῆos to give their best so they can represent Davao in the National Training Camp in Manila in April, and hopefully be chosen as the best campers this year under the program.

The next Jr. NBA activity in Davao is the Regional Selection Camp which will be held at the Ateneo de Davao Gym on March 16. The camp is open to all 12 to 14 year old boys in Davao City and the whole of Mindanao. The first 200 kids are assured of slots in the tryouts.

Ten best Davao campers will be chosen at the selection camp and will be flown to Manila, all expenses paid. They will compete with other top campers from Cebu and the NCR in the National Training Camp in April. The best eight young cagers chosen at the national level will be named the 2009-10 Jr. NBA Philippines All-Star Team and will experience special NBA activities.

The Jr. NBA Philippines effort is completely free in all stages for all participants and is presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins with the support of Official Sports Drink Gatorade, Official Broadcast Partner Basketball TV, Official Automobile Partner Mitsubishi Motors, Official Mall Partner SM Supermalls, Official Supplier Spalding, and the Department of Education.

Local school coaches and Filipino boys ages 12 to 14 can register for the program for free through the Jr. NBA event website www.nba.com/jrnba/philippines

Davao coaches break Jr. NBA records for coaches clinic attendance

250 coaches came from all over Davao Province to attend the coaches clinic of the 2009-10 Jr. NBA Philippines presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins at the Montaῆa Gym in Davao City – the largest attendance ever for coaches in the Jr. NBA’s three year run in the country . The Jr. NBA program is the first-ever international basketball event in Davao.

“I have never seen such a passionate and enthusiastic crowd,” said Frank Lopez, US Jr. NBA Coach who ran the coaches clinic here and who will conduct the school tryouts on January 22 at the Holy Child School in Jacinto, Davao City.

“The coaches’ presence here in record numbers is proof that basketball is really big in Davao and that the NBA was right in bringing the program over here,” added Carlo Singson, Senior Country Manager of NBA Asia.

The Jr. NBA Philippines presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins is in Davao for the very first time, responding to a clamor from local coaches to bring the one-of-a-kind basketball clinic that targets not just players but also parents, coaches and school officials to Mindanao. This has made the National Basketball Association’s youth basketball development program a truly nationwide NBA endeavor.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, through a prepared speech read by his representative, said the clinic “will be the gateway for learning best basketball techniques from an NBA coach and an opportunity to test the skills, abilities and drive of the local basketball community”. Davao City has taken on sports as one of its priorities, he said, and sports plays a very vital role in promoting and sustaining sports development in the City.”

After the coaches clinic and the school tryouts today the next phase of the program is the Regional Selection Camp which will be held at the Ateneo de Davao court on Sunday, March 14. All kids aged 12-14 in Davao City and Mindanao are invited to attend. The first 200 kids are assured of slots in the program.

At the camp the kids will learn new skills, drills and the Jr. NBA S.T.A.R. values of Sportsmanship, Teamwork, a positive Attitude and Respect. They will also undergo NBA-style skills tests and challenges that other Jr. NBA aspirants all over the world undergo. The best performers in the Davao Regional Selection Camp will qualify for the Jr. NBA National Training Camp and will be sent to Manila to compete with other selected campers from Cebu and Manila. The National Training Camp will be held in April in Manila.

The Jr. NBA Philippines Program presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins was introduced into the country in early 2007 to 16 Metro Manila private and public schools initially, and was expanded to reach 200 schools and 20,000 participants in Manila and Cebu in 2008-09. This year it has targeted 300 schools and approximately 30,000 students in a nationwide campaign.

The Jr. NBA Philippines effort is completely free for all participants at all stages and is presented by Hi-Smart Multivatiamins with the support of Official Sports Drink Gatorade, Official Broadcast Partner Basketball TV, Official Automobile Partner Mitsubishi Motors, Official Mall Partner SM Supermalls, Official Supplier Spalding, and the Department of Education.

Gregorio added that, “The program is a great boost for youth basketball because the transfer of technology will really expose the kids to the global basketball experience. With the support of the Jr. NBA, we may yet be able to produce the first Filipino NBA player. The interest generated by the Jr. NBA program – a 100% free, A-class basketball program -- can also motivate our 12 to 14 year olds to get into basketball instead of getting hooked on vices that would destroy their dreams and aspirations.”

The 2009-10 Jr. NBA Philippines Program presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins – the third consecutive Jr. NBA program in the Philippines – will go full blast in 2010, starting with the Coaches Clinics to be conducted in Manila, Cebu and Davao in January; School Tryouts in January and February and Regional Selection Camps in March. PWC enjoyed a 58-44 lead after the third quarter as Jayriff James Luzero made eight of his game-high 21 points. Miguel Angelo Pacheco and Ed Paolo Lapaz also both exploded with 11 and 14 points, respectively in the first half to power PWC to a 40-31 advantage.

But they were suddenly silent in the final quarter with Luzero only scoring just two points. The only other scorer for PWC coach Jonas Mark Aquino was Osmer Chan, who only made six points but was still enough to keep his team alive.

John Renn Amantiad led UIC with 20 points with three triples, two in the final quarter.

In the Inter-Company division, Yuchengco Group of Companies posted its second win in three outings by routing www.express, 73-57 in the main game.

Playing coach Adel Nobleza powered YGC with 29 big points, 12 of them scored in the first quarter for a 25-19 lead. But YGC allowed the Forwarders to rally and cut their deficit to just one point, 31-30 in the second canto.

Nobleza then went back to work, hitting 10 points, while Jose Nino Leones added five of his 13 markers in the third quarter to widen their lead, 52-44 and never looked back. Gilbert Aquino and Merwin Ramos led the Forwarders’ losing cause with 13 and 11, respectively.

Meanwhile, PWC demolished Immanuel School of Davao, 64-49 while Thompson Christian School won over Stella Maris Academy by walkover both in the Cadet division.

PWC posted its third win against one loss, while SMA only took its first loss and is already assured of a seat in the semifinal round with a 3-1 card.

Gabriel Espina led PWC with 16 points followed by Ronaldo “Dongkoy” Jumawan and Christian Reyes with 14 and 13, while for Immanuel it was Jasper Harvey Mesiona with 22 markers.

The league is organized by the Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc. in coordination with the Multi-sectoral Organization of Volunteers for Entrepreneurship (MOVE).

Batang BBL now 3-0 in Nokia NBTC D-League

John Arellano made a side jumper with three seconds left while rival Kenneth Lontoc bungled his turn at the buzzer as Batang BBL-UB posted a 62-60 win over B-MEG-SBC last weekend in the Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League at the St. Bridget College Gym in Batangas City.

Overconfidence got the better of Batang BBL early as the team trailed, 31-55, in the first three quarters before Jonel Sangalang, Joseph Elnar and Arellano combined for 25 of their teams’ 27 fourth quarter points to foil B-MEG-SBC, which even tied the game at 58-all (1:22 left) on Karil Panopio’s three-pointer and freethrow.

Arellano scored on jumper for a 60-58 Batang BBL-UB lead before Lontoc retaliated with two charities for the game’s final tie at 60. Coach NR Aguda sued for time and with 12 seconds left, set up Arellano’s go-ahead basket for the third win in this under-18 tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.

B-MEG, which dropped to a 1-1 card, was led by KR Panganiban’s 11 points in this tournament in the tournament also supported by San Miguel Purefoods Company, Smart Communications and Burlington.

Smart-La Salle posted its second win in three games via a 79-66 tally over Ulam King –STC, which dropped to its third loss in a row. Despite leading the game all way, Smart-La Salle still needed Thele Oloto to score six unanswered points underneath in the last three minutes for the final breakaway after Ulam King closed in a 60-62.

Oloto topscored for his team with 14 points and was supported by Patrick Calingasan, Deo Guda and Emerson Dimailig, who chipped in 11, 13, 13 points, respectively.

The Nokia NBTC D-League is envisioned to be a feeder program for varsity squads and teams catering to leagues such as the UAAP, NCAA, Philippine Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association and the Liga Pilipinas.

From only 29 clubs, the league field has grown to 108 teams backed by commercial and local government units. The tournament will have an inter-city, regional and national finals, the latter of which is set in May at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Batangas, Naga teams share Nokia NBTC lead

Batang BBL-UB of Batangas and ABC Ideas of Naga tied Energen-Pampanga for the Luzon leadership with their second straight victories recently in the Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League in several venues.

Joseph Elnar fired 14 points while John Arellano and Joseph Sangalang had 12 and 10 respectively when Batang BBL-UB beat Ulam King STC (0-2) for a first win in the under-18 tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.

The second win came shortly as Arellano tallied 12 points while Charles Valenzuela and Elnar had 10 apiece when Batang BBL-UB beat Smart-La Salle,67-58, in the tournament also supported by San Miguel Purefoods Company, Smart Communications and Burlington.

B-MEG SBC plucked its first win also at the expense of Ulam King-STC, 74-71, with the victors bannered by KR Panganiban’s 21 and David Panganiban’s 10 points also in Batangas City.

Farther south, ABC Ideas got its second win after the opening day by beating North Star (0-1), 62-58, in the game held at the Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU) gym. Bicol-based St. Joseph routed Little Adamsia, 73-39, for its first win and to deal its victim a first loss.

In Lucena City, QPL-Black bested QPL Red (1-1) with a 75-60 score for a first win while QPL-Blue-Karis team (1-0) beat Lucena City (0-1), 89-66.

Emcor stuns YGC, Holy Child nips USEP

ORANGE GENERATION CUP

Emcor stuns YGC; Holy Child nips USEP

EMCOR finally posted its first win with an upset over Yuchengco Group of Companies, 90-71 in the first Orange Generation Cup basketball tournament, January 10, at the USEP gym.

Emcor improved its team standing to 1-2 win-loss slate, while YGC only suffered its first loss against one win in the Inter-Company division. Emcor started strong with a 40-29 halftime lead and never looked back despite the arrival of YGC’s playing coach Adel Nobleza late in the fourth quarter already.

Nobleza could only managed to make 13 points, while the other scorers for YGC were Leonil Genozo led with 21 followed by Erchez Agdon 15 and assistant playing coach Juhnard Escudero 12.

Felix Cesar topscored for Emcor with 28 points, while Paul John Sy made 16, Bryan Cabusas 14 and Alfred Necesito 12.

In the Senior division, Holy Child School of Davao College survived a late rally by the host University of Southeastern Philippines to escape with a78-74 win.

Holy Child almost bungled a 13-point lead they enjoyed after the third quarter, 53-40 when USEP started strong at the start of the final quarter with three consecutive triples to cut their deficit to just two, 65-63.

But USEP’s momentum was stopped after its gunners Eugenio Obcena Jr., Harry Cabo, Louis Philip Salgado and Charlie Entes all fouled out.

Gean Carlo Paredez led Holy Child with 23 points followed by AC Samantilla with 17, JV Ging-Ging 14 and Rex Sinilong 11. Martin Encabo Jr. topscored for USEP with 18 followed by Obcena with 16.

In other games, Brokenshire College remained undefeated by whipping the University of Immaculate Concepcion, 73-61. Christian Joy Edralin and Arnold Sison both exploded with 19 points apiece. Laurence Albacite added 13 as Brokenshire posted its third straight win.

In the junior division, Holy Child also continued its winning ways by crushing Assumption College of Davao, 70-56 for its fourth straight win.

Jose Remy Morada topscored with 19 points followed by Rocky Vrian Mejos 17, Richard Ybalio 12 and Lemuel Escudero 10.

Meanwhile, Stella Maris Academy of Davao showed too much firepower to rout Precious International School of Davao, 70-28 in the Cadet division. Earl Nicole Hiso led SMAD with 16 points.

3:30 pm—Black vs. Green

The league-leading Blacks seek for a fourth straight win on Sunday against a dangerous Green squad at the resumption of the Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Cup Inter-Media basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.

The Blacks, who masterfully escaped with a 115-114 double overtime win against the Reds last Sunday, will be hoping to stretch their winning run to four and keep its one game lead over the Reds and the Greenies which both tote a 2-2 win-loss card.

The hard-luck Reds hope to bounce back from that painful loss to the Blacks as they collide with the cellar-dwelling Whites (1-3) in the first game of the Sunday twinbill.

A muffed free throw by burly forward Jun Suter of DXGO with no time left handed the Blacks the victory over the Reds. GMA’s Jun Digamon waxed hot for the Blacks with five triples and a game-high 29 for Team Black but it was ABS-CBN’s Allan Abais’ two free throws that put the Blacks on top for good at 115-113, 8 ticks left in the second extension.

Suter drove for the basket and missed but he was fouled on the process as time expired. With no time left and two cracks to tie the game, Suter can only come halfway close to that.

Against the Greenies, the Blacks will have to come out in full force with Digamon, Orlanes and Abais along with Jun Bersamin on the firing end. The Greens will rely on the dangerous duo of Carl Eric “Idol Dagul” Alindao of MOR and Boom Boom Jerios of GMA along with Jon Develos of Mindanao Times.

The Reds meantime will have their hands full against the high-scoring Philip Tumaroy of the Whites. Leading the charge for the Reds will again be the Bruise Brothers combi of Rico Jones Biliran and Suter with slippery Terver “Inday Tanini” Quillano. (NJB, City Sports)

It all came down to the battle of free throws and the Blacks just had the touch and a little bit of luck. Reds forward DXAB anchorman Allan Abais canned two free throws with 8 seconds left in the second overtime but the Blacks’ Bruise Brothers of Rico Jones Biliran and Jun Suter weren’t as lucky from the same distance when it really mattered.

In the end, those free throws decided an otherwise tightly-fought contest for the Blacks who snatched a 115-114 double overtime win over the Reds on January 10 in the Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Cup Inter-Media basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.

The burly Biliran, who had a game-high 29 points, muffed a crucial free throw with 14 seconds left in the second overtime after baiting a foul and connecting on a drive to tie the score at 114-all. He had all worked it up from the back of his mind after missing what could have been a game-winner in the first OT, but his free throw rimmed out. Abais was fouled in the next play with 8 ticks left and calmly sank his freebies to put the Blacks on top 115-113.

In the final play, Love Radio’s Suter picked up his own miss but was fouled as time expired. With no time left, Suter went to the line for a pair of charities as both teams stood anxiously from the sidelines. Suter sank the first but missed the second that could have sent the game to a third OT.

The Blacks now lead the four-team tourney devoted to media practitioners in the city with a 3-1 win-loss slate. The Reds dropped to 2-2 in a tie with the Greens which beat the Whites earlier, 81-79. The Whites dropped to 1-3.

Boom Boom Jerios of GMA fired 27 points and Carl Eric “Idol Dagul” Alindao of MOR added 24 to lead the Greenies. Percy Penoliar of ABS-CBN sizzled with 41 points for the Whites in a losing effort. (NJB, City Sports)

Magsanoc enjoins local coaches, 12-14 year olds to join the once-in-a-lifetime Jr. NBA experience

“The global basketball stage is opening it’s doors to Asian countries and we should take advantage of the rare opportunity that it is presenting to our youth today.”

That was what Ronnie Magsanoc, Jr. NBA-appointed coach and assistant coach of the Purefoods TJ Giants in the PBA said of the Jr. NBA Philippines presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins that will officially tip off with the Jr. NBA Coaches Clinic at the Jose Rizal University Gym on Saturday, January 16. The Jr. NBA Coaches Clinic will roll into Cebu City Sports Club in Cebu on January 18 and Montana Gym in Davao on January 21.

Magsanoc, who will be joined on the local coaching staff of this year’s Jr. NBA Philippines program by Purefoods Head Coach Ryan Gregorio and PBA Legend Benjie Paras, said the Jr. NBA program continues to inspire teens aged 12-14 years old to aspire for something bigger in their sport.

He cited the six top campers of last year’s Jr. NBA Philippines program who, he said, were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to taste the NBA experience. Mark Jayven Tallo, Adrian Roland Marvin Mueller and Arc Araw-Araw from Cebu, Aldrin Fegidero and Michael Jay Javelosa from Manila and Jose Carlo Escalambre joined the tryouts, underwent the regional training camp tests and topped the national training camp challenges that earned them the title of Jr. NBA Philippines Team and a trip to the US to play with a counterpart US Jr. NBA Team, go on a tour of New York City and watch an NBA game live.

“Those boys achieved what others are just dreaming of. They were rewarded for all the hard work and sacrifice that they put into the Jr. NBA National Training Camp run by veteran Jr. NBA clinician Coach Frank Lopez and underwent a life changing phase in their young lives. Things will never be the same for them. They made it happen. They will always have that "something special" that they can go back to, to make them feel good when things are not going well,” Magsanoc said.

“Jr. NBA participants are taking the correct step towards becoming better student athletes because they gain valuable experience from the extensive training and the difficult competition. They are also exposed to the proper values thru the S.T.A.R concept – Sportsmanship, Teamwork, (A Positive) Attitude, and Respect -- which define the Jr. NBA program. They become total persons from the whole experience,” Magsanoc said.

“Philippine basketball is getting a huge lift thru this "NBA Cares" program.” Magsanoc said. “We should encourage our Filipino coaches to attend the Coaches Clinics, and work hand in hand with the NBA to find the “diamonds in the rough” in their respective schools and communities.”

“Hopefully, this program continues to identify and develop a Jr. NBA Philippines Team that will get the chance to show their basketball talents in a big stage,” he concluded.

The 2009-10 Jr. NBA Philippines Program presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins – the third consecutive Jr. NBA program in the Philippines – will go full blast in 2010, starting with Coaches Clinics to be conducted in Manila, Cebu and Davao in January; School Clinics and Tryouts in January and February and Regional Training Camps in March. The 2009-10 Jr. NBA Philippines Team, comprised of the eight top campers who exhibit superior basketball ability and who best embody the S.T.A.R. values, will be chosen in April at the National Training Camp.

As presenting partner, Hi-Smart Multivitamins will conduct seminars at the various Jr. NBA schools to educate children, their parents and coaches, on how to meet children’s nutritional requirements. The effort is also supported by the Official Sports Drink Gatorade, Official Broadcast Partner Basketball TV, Official Automobile Partner Mitsubishi Motors, Official Supplier Spalding, and the Department of Education.

This year, the program will be offered in the National Capital Region, Visayas and now Davao, and will reach a record 300 schools and benefit approximately 30,000 students, parents and coaches. Starting today, local school coaches and Filipino boys ages 12 to 14 can register for the program for free through the Jr. NBA event website www.nba.com/jrnba/philippines
