SANA’A, Yemen--The Nokia RP U-18 team dropped its second straight game
anew as it bowed to host Yemen, 76-69, on Saturday in the 21st FIBA
Asia U18 Championship at the 22nd May Arena here.
Following a 75-83 setback to China, the Filipinos, backed by Nokia
Philippines and TAO Corporation, came out flat although they were only
down by six at the half at 33-39.
“We came out rather flat. We made a fight out of it, but we were
really flat,” said head coach Eric Altamirano, whose team is battling
Japan at 2 pm (Manila time) to improve on its quarterfinals chances.
Gelo Alolino scored 19 points while Gwyne Capacio had 16 for the
Philippines, which now totes a 1-2 record in the round. Sabri Sadakh
was the leader of the hosts’ cause with a game-high 21 points.
Qualifying teams in the second round carry over only preliminary wins
against fellow qualifiers from their same group. Only Philippines’
61-60 win over Syria was carried over to the second round as Saudi
Arabia (which the Philippines defeated, 86-68)) dropped to the
classification round while the Filipinos lost to China all in Group C
in the opening round.
Now in the second round Group F, the Philippines is lagging behind
China (3-0), Japan (3-0) and Yemen (2-1). But they are better off than
Iraq (0-3) and Syria (0-3) and are still in the running for a
quarterfinals seat. Top four teams in this round join top four teams
in the Group E in the knock-out quarterfinals.
The tournament dangles three tickets to the 2011 FIBA U19 World
Championship to be played in Latvia next year.(pr)

Nokia RP U-18 loses to China by 8
SANA’A, Yemen—The Nokia RP team kept up with the China for most of the
game, but ended at the shorter end of the score with an 75-83 setback
in Group C of the Fiba Asia U-18 Championships at the 22nd May courts
here on Friday.
Despite the loss, the Filipinos, backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO
Corporation, entered the second round where it is now grouped with
Japan, Yemen, Syria and Iraq. They will battle Yemen at 7 pm on
Saturday (1 am, Manila time).
Noticed mainly for their tough defense, the Philippine team had to
grapple in the fourth quarter with China’s big men, mostly seven
footers as they were outrebounded, 41-29.
“We were able to keep up with them but our big guys got into foul
trouble. We lost but I really feel that the boys played like real
men,”said Nokia RP U-18 coach Eric Altamirano.
Chinese coach Fan Bin also lauded the Philippines’ tough stance.“They
(Philippines) have improved a lot,” said Fan as he recalled their
match in the FIBA Asia U16 Championship last year when they won the
game with an 85-66 score. In Friday’s match, Zhu Xuhang led the
scoring for the game with 20 points, and eight rebounds while
much-heralded Guo Ailun poured in 19 points.
Raphael Banal led the Philippines with 19 points while Kiefer Ravena
and Russel Escoto had 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Filipinos shot only 37 percent from the field at 39 percent (26 of
67 attempts) but cashed in from the freethrow line with a 65 percent
clip (15 of 23). They had more field goal attempts than China’s 31 of
59 for a 53 percent shooting.

Nokia D-League national finals starts on Friday
Everything is set for the Nokia National Basketball Training Center
(NBTC) D-League National Finals starting on Friday (May 28, 2010) at the
San Juan Gym (at the back of the San Juan Municipal Hall) in San Juan
City.
The provincial crown will contested by Smart Cagayan de Oro, B-MEG
Expert Cebu, Trace College Laguna and Smart Olongapo Volunteers in
this tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation with
recognition by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
The NCR crown, on the other hand, will be up for grabs among B-MEG
Integra Manila, Smart Manila, Magnolia Chocolait-Paranaque and Xavier
San Juan in the event also backed by Smart Communications, San Miguel
Pure Foods Company and Burlington.
Today’s games will start at 1 pm while the opening ceremonies will be
at 2:30 pm. On Saturday, the games will start at 8:30 am while the
actual finale for the provincial and NCR teams will open at 1 pm on
Sunday. Admission is free on all these days.
“We invite all basketball aficionados to witness the exciting national

Smart CdO enters Nokia D-League finals, B-MEG Premium Davao lands at 3rd spot
Smart Cagayan de Oro bounced back from an opening day loss to make it
all the way to the national finals after beating Happy
Fisherman-GenSan, 102-90, recently in the Nokia National Basketball
Training Center (NBTC) D-League at the Xavier University Gym in
Cagayan de Oro City.
Most Outstanding Player John Karlo Casino had 17 points while Dennis
Jabagat had 14 and mythical team member Jiovani Jalalon 11 as the team
annexed the Mindanao crown in this tournament backed by Nokia
Philippines and TAO Corporation with recognition by the Samahang
Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
The Smart cagers lost to B-MEG Premium Davao (69-66), but claimed the
scalp of IMCC Iligan (84-65) and B-MEG Aquaration-Valencia (97-48) to
enter the finals against Happy Fisherman-Gensan in the event also
backed by Smart Communications, San Miguel Pure Foods Company and
Burlington.
Hamsar Macalintal had 12 points while Aaron Zobel and Douglas Rama had
10 apiece for Happy Fishermen, which defeated B-MEG
Aquaration-Valencia (85-56), lost to to B-MEG Premium Davao (49-68)
and bested IMCC Iligan (83-51) to arrange the final against Smart
Cagayan de Oro, which joined Smart Laguna, Smart Olongapo and B-MEG
Expert Cebu in the provincial national finals set May 28-30.
For third place, B-MEG Premium Davao-beat Island Fruits Zamboanga with
a 71-50 score as Scottie Thompson had a game-high 17 markers.
Others who made it to the mythical team were Rocky Mejos of B-MEG
Premium Davao, Thompson of B-MEG Premium Davao, Leonardo Santillan of
Island Fruits Zamboanga and Marvin Porquillo of Happy
Fishermen-General Santos.
John Liao of IMCC Iligan earned the Most Promising Player award while
Jarred Nacasabog of B-MEG Aquaration Valencia was bestowed the
Sportsmanship award.

Nokia NBTC regionals start
The Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League regional finals will open on April 7 (Wednesday) at the Bethel Gym in Lucena City for South Luzon and on April 14 at the SBMA gym in Olongapo City for the North Luzon qualifiers.
Survivors of the inter-city qualifiers in South Luzon are Batangas-BBL (Batangas), Hi-Smart Bacoor (Cavite), QPL (Lucena) and ABC Ideas (Bicol) in this 18-and-under tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.
Battling for the North Luzon bragging rights and berths in the national finals are Star Margarine (Baguio), Mayor Pablo-SLC (La Union), Smart Pampanga (Pampanga), Smart Olongapo (Olongapo) and Blue Boy Nepo (Angeles City) in the event also backed by San Miguel Pure Foods Company, Smart Communications and Burlington.
Still to be completed are the qualifiers’ list for the Visayas regionals set April 21-23 at Dumaguete City and Mindanao regionals on April 28-30 in Cagayan de Oro City.
“The matches are getting even more exciting for those teams which qualified in the regionals. But those teams that did not make it to the next level have already won because of the basketball training that these teams got and can pass on to respective communities,”said Nokia NBTC D-League director Eric Altamirano, who also using the tournament to screen future hopefuls to the Nokia RP U-18 team that will do battle in the Fiba U-18 Championships set in September.
“The aim remains the same and that is to develop the fundamentals of these players and get them ready for upper level basketball,”Altamirano added.
A total of 108 teams have entered the tournament that started only last December with all participants, both players and coaches, learning from the unified training program instituted by the organizers headed by training director Alex Compton.
The Nokia NBTC D-League, which virtually serves as a grassroots program in the country, aims to develop top-notch players geared towards the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Philippine Basketball League (PBL), Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and the Liga Pilipinas.

Hector de los Santos, Dennis Villanueva and Mhekjan Magtoto had 12 points apiece as Smart Pampanga defeated Energen Pampanga for the Pampanga inter-city crown of this tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.
John Manabat had a game-high 20 points for Energen while Jolo Agustin had 12 and Jerome Quiambao 10 in the tournament also supported by San Miguel Purefoods Company, Smart Communications and Burlington.
Star Hotdogs-Pampanga beat BMEG Integra Pampanga, 82-75, for third place. Jervian Torres led Star Hotdogs with 18 points.
Karis leaned on Philip Co’s 19 points and Charles Duco’s 15 as Karis walloped Smart-QPL to nail the Quezon inter-city title. Smart-QPL drew 13 points each from Errol Magbadlac and Edilberto Almonte.
The QPL team bested Lucena City for third place as Ralph Losloso and Ramon Suarez had 11 points each while Cer Alcala had 10. Darrel Villaruel had 21 points for Lucena City.
The Nokia NBTC D-League is aiming to develop topnotch players who could make it someday to different leagues in the country. These leagues are the UAAP, NCAA, Philippine Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association and the Liga Pilipinas.
Aside from the competition, the players and the coaches receive training about basketball fundamentals and team play from the Nokia NBTC staff headed by Nokia RP U-18 coach Eric Altamirano who acts as director and Alex Compton who is training director.

BBL-UB still unstoppable in Nokia D-League
Batang BBL-University of Batangas extended its winning roll to five games as it edged B-Meg-SBC, 80-65, in the Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League recently at the St. Bridget College Gym at Batangas City.
Although trailing for three-and-a-half quarters, John Arellano (11 points) and Julius Yap (9 points) powered BBL-UB as the team outscored its opponent to pull off the win in the 18-and-under tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.
Batang BBL-UB now has a 5-0 record in the second round while B-Meg-SBC dropped to a 1-4 record in the tournament also supported by San Miguel Purefoods Company, Smart Communications and Burlington.
The Lipa-based SMART team blasted cellar-dweller Ulam King, 98-60, for a 4-1 card. The victors turned to scorers AJ Cubilla (17 points), Renzo Mojado (14 points), and Denoc Beltran (16 points) to step on the gas early by posting a 20-point lead at 34-14 after the first quarter. Ulam King dropped to a 0-5 card.
In Cagayan de Oro City, Smart-CdO and Oro Grande posted second straight wins each in the second playdate of the CdO leg held at the Xavier University Gym.
Smart-CDO bested B-MEG, 89-68, as Charvi Nemenzo led his team with 15 points followed by Jiovanni Jalaon and Jemerson Bucag, who scored 13 points apiece. Rhodelle Nagac had 17, Francis Jabines 15 and Rosendo Aquino 12 for B-MEG (0-2). In the other game, Oro Grande (2-0) rapped Nutri-C (0-2), 88-79.
The Nokia NBTC D-League aims to be a feeder program for varsity squads and teams catering to leagues such as the UAAP, NCAA, Philippine Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association and the Liga Pilipinas. There will be an NCR champion and a provincial champion as the tournament culminates in May 2010.

Batang BBL now 3-0 in Nokia NBTC D-League
John Arellano made a side jumper with three seconds left while rival Kenneth Lontoc bungled his turn at the buzzer as Batang BBL-UB posted a 62-60 win over B-MEG-SBC last weekend in the Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League at the St. Bridget College Gym in Batangas City.
Overconfidence got the better of Batang BBL early as the team trailed, 31-55, in the first three quarters before Jonel Sangalang, Joseph Elnar and Arellano combined for 25 of their teams’ 27 fourth quarter points to foil B-MEG-SBC, which even tied the game at 58-all (1:22 left) on Karil Panopio’s three-pointer and freethrow.
Arellano scored on jumper for a 60-58 Batang BBL-UB lead before Lontoc retaliated with two charities for the game’s final tie at 60. Coach NR Aguda sued for time and with 12 seconds left, set up Arellano’s go-ahead basket for the third win in this under-18 tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.

Batangas, Naga teams share Nokia NBTC lead
Batang BBL-UB of Batangas and ABC Ideas of Naga tied Energen-Pampanga for the Luzon leadership with their second straight victories recently in the Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League in several venues.
Joseph Elnar fired 14 points while John Arellano and Joseph Sangalang had 12 and 10 respectively when Batang BBL-UB beat Ulam King STC (0-2) for a first win in the under-18 tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.

From only 29 clubs, the league field has grown to 108 teams backed by commercial and local government units. The tournament will have an inter-city, regional and national finals, the latter of which is set in May at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Talents abound in Nokia NBTC D-League
Extensive talent identification camps were conducted by the organizers to help participating teams determine the players who will join their rosters in the ongoing Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League.
Nokia NBTC D-League director Eric Altamirano and training director Alex Compton said they were impressed by the player turnout that the 18-and-under league, under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP) headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala, had to increase its roster to 108 teams this year.
“Basketball talents abound the country and these players are usually diamonds-in-the rough who need training and a competitive environment to improve on their skills. That’s why we increased the number of teams this year,”said Altamirano and Compton on the league primarily backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation with San Miguel Pure Foods Company, Smart Communications and Burlington as major sponsors.
Altamirano said the league is blessed to have so many players willing to try out for spots, that the competition becomes very intense.”The good thing about these talent identification camps is that these give an objective view on what players the teams need and which ones would fit the program for the long term.”
Talent identification camps or TICs were already held in La Union, Cavite (Dasmarinas, General Trias and Bacoor), Laguna (Calamba), Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Leyte (Ormoc and Tacloban), Davao, Cebu, General Santos, Iloilo, Bacolod, Bohol, Zamboanga, Dumaguete and Butuan.
Altamirano said they expect the total participants in these TICs in 32 areas to reach 5,760. He said that 180 players from each area broken down into those born in 1992 (60), 1993 (60) and 1994 (60) have joined these TICs.
“Although we increased the number of teams, we might not have enough slots for everybody in the Nokia D-League, said Altamirano.”But this is always in keeping up with our aim to be the feeder program for higher leagues in the future.”
Altamirano is referring to leagues like the NCAA, UAAP, Philippine Basketball League (PBL), Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), Liga Pilipinas and future national teams.

Nokia D-League to help coaches
Over a hundred local coaches will also benefit from the several workshops during the Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League that will start December 6, Sunday, at the Jacinto Tiu Gym of the Xavier Sports Center.
NBTC Director Eric Altamirano said it is his personal desire to also help the coaches improve on their skills in the tournament backed by Nokia Pilipinas and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.
“We coaches are always getting requests for workshops at these areas. And the Nokia NBTC allows these coaches to learn and immediately pass on and utilize their skills in a competitive tournament environment,” Altamirano said about the tournament backed by San Miguel Purefoods Company Inc., Smart Communications and Burlington.
B-MEG Feeds will support teams in Manila, Batangas, Pampanga, Baguio, Cebu, Bohol, Cagayan de Oro, Bicol, Davao and Bacolod. Magnolia will back teams from Baguio, Iloilo, Davao and Parañaque.
Purefoods-Hormel will be the name for some teams in Pampanga and Batangas while San Mig Coffee joins one team belonging to Pasig/Mandaluyong. Another corporate giant in Smart will be the banner for at least one team in each of the 13 regions as Burlington will carry three teams.
Altamirano said the coaches are trained under a unified and unique format that is inculcated constantly during the practices of the teams until the tournament’s culmination in May.
“This is to ensure that the necessary skills are being taught. The first priority in the Nokia NBTC D-League is always to develop the players for the future,” added Altamirano, who said the practices are to be monitored by NBTC training director Alex Compton.
Practices under the Nokia NBTC environment stress on basketball fundamentals, the repetition of good habits off and on the court and the team game aside from affiliated topics like nutrition.

“SBP BOLSTERS YOUTH BASKETBALL PROGRAM”
After its very successful Nokia-Tao National Basketball Training Center for the elite youth, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is strengthening its grassroots youth programs through 3 forthcoming tournaments which the national sports association for basketball is pursuing.
Spearheaded by its Youth Commission, the SBP is sending a delegation to the 1st Asian Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia to compete in the Beach Basketball event from October 22-26, 2008. The Smart-Pilipinas 3 on 3 team will be composed of 4 up and coming young players of the Youth pool including 3 players who were part of the RP Youth team that competed recently in the Asian Jr. Men’s Championship in Tehran, Iran. They are Joseph Tolentino, Samuel Marata, Papot Paredes and Arthur De La Cruz. The delegation will be led by SBP Executive Director Noli Eala, SBP Youth Commission Chairman Nic Jorge, Team Manager and Smart Marketing Head Danilo Mojica and Head Coach Britt Reroma.
The Smart-Pilipinas National team, which is in the group of Japan and Thailand, is hoping to provide the Philippine delegation with a medal in the newly introduced biennial event. “The SBP is honored to be part of this historic inaugural event. The boys have prepared hard and we are hopeful we will perform well,” Jorge said.
Aside from its participation in the Beach Games, the SBP is busy preparing to stage two major youth tourneys in 2009. These are the National Junior Championship slated to be held in Baguio City from January 11-18, 2009 and the National 33 Open Championship to be held in the summer of 2009.
The NJC will feature 20 of the best high school teams of the country vying for the national inter secondary crown. The top 20 teams will be taken from the various regions of the SBP through provincial and regional eliminations. The NJC will be the first national tournament directly managed and organized by the SBP through its Regional Directors and Area Heads.
On the other hand, the National 33 Open Championship will pit the best 3 on 3 teams all over the Philippines in various age group categories playing for the first time under FIBA 33 rules. The winners of the Open will be automatically included in the pool that will represent the Philippines in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010.
“These programs are a manifestation of the SBP’s commitment under MVP to long term youth development. The youth sector is a priority area of the SBP. It is our hope that by providing the youth more opportunities for competitive tournaments, we can bolster the future of Philippine basketball for international competitions, “ Eala stated.
