Liga teams brace for tough battle

This doesn’t look like an excursion for the visiting teams of Liga Pilipinas. This loom like a war.
“Every team vowed to go all out to win this one, the teams committed to play all out,” said Bong Go, executive assistant to the Mayor and head of the sports committee of this year’s Araw ng Dabaw festivities.

All four squads—Cebu’s M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala, Gen. Santos City’s MP Pacman, Laguna’s Team Bida and hometeam Montana Pawnshop—bring to town their formidable line-ups and impressive records. These teams dispute the Mayor Rody-Inday Sara 73rd Araw ng Dabaw Invitational basketball tournament which gets going this Sunday at the Almendras Gym.

Although the teams’ final line-ups will not be known until Saturday when they check in on the eve of the tournament, it looks like the cast is all square at this point. Montana Pawnshop for sure will enjoy the hometown edge and a big crowd rooting for them, but even that is no assurance that the local franchise has the tactical edge.

Manny Pacquiao’s MP Pacman will be hoping to ride the crest of their chief backer’s glory most especially if the Filipino world pound-for-pound champ wins his fight also this Sunday against Joshua Clottey. That should rub intensity to the team whose pride will be put to a severe test.

The Cebuanos, as usual, are expected to flaunt their physical game which has been their trademark. Coach Yayoy Alcoseba’s charges could well enjoy the advantage in experience having been consistently taking part in various tournaments in and out of Cebu.

But focus will be on Team Bida. The Laguna-based franchise may yet fly in with an intriguing line-up formed out of a vast pool of basketball talent in Luzon.
Even then, no team enjoys a distinct advantage over the other and this should make the tournament more exciting. Gamedates will be from March 14 to 17 and will be free to the public courtesy of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte.
The tournament is organized by the CMO-Sports Development Division and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP)-Region XI. (pr)

The Police Regional Office XI did not slow down in the fourth quarter to clinch Game 3 against the City Mayor’s Office, 79-73 en route to winning the Mayor Rody Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte/AFP-PNP Basketball Tournament crown, Thursday, at the Davao City Recreation Center



Rob Palomares and Anthony Padua led the scoring charge in the last canto to seal the victory against CMO of Bong Go who could no longer find the winning formula as their guns cooled down in the dying minutes.



Ariel Bonleon missed a three-point attempt that could have tied the game at 76-all in the last 25 seconds and Cadel Mosqueda fouled Padua who converted two free throws, 78-73 with 21 seconds left.



And time was no longer on CMO’s side.



Go and Roy Bangkas combined for 20 points in the first quarter but they could no longer find their range in the final half. Go could only muster eight points and seven from Bangkas.

and continued to dominate the rebounding department.



“We followed our game plan. CMO’s strength is in the first half and when we saw that they were slowing down in the final half, we did our job to keep on running,scoring and rebounding,” said dela Rosa.



Dela Rosa made no mistake when he kept on calling Dominic delos Reyes as MVP when organizers awarded the pointguard the most valuable player award.



“Mo dala man gud siya sa dula, so MVP siya,” he said.

A rejuvenated CMO squad made sure there would be no awarding ceremonies last Saturday, much less one that would crown their rivals from the PNP Regional Office XI as champions. To make that happen, they played like a champion and finished like a champion.

And so it will now boil down to one final battle in Game 3. No more tomorrows, no more awarding postponements. It’s either you or me for the Mayor’s Men and PRO XI in the deciding game of the Mayor Rody and IndaySara 7th AFP-PNP basketball tournament best-of-three finals.

Game 2 ended with CMO staying alive with a 99-88 win and will take a psychological edge going into the winner-take-all Game 3 on Thursday morning (10:00 a.m.) at the Almendras Gym.

Christopher “Bong” Go managed to wiggle out of the suffocating defense of the PNP men and rain 4 trifectas in a big second quarter uprising that quelled a major rally by PRO XI. He had five triples in the game and a day-high 23 to bail CMO out of trouble early before going to the bench in the last 6 minutes of the final canto to allow the “Triple B” wrecking crew of Roy Bangkas, Dioven Braga and Ariel Bonleon to finish off their Catitipan-based rivals.

The troika combined for 48 points in the game while big man Mondigo added 13 to anchor a balanced CMO offensive.

“Nakaadjust dayon mi karon unlike sa Game 1. They played good defense pero nakapangandam mi karon sa ilaha ug mayo,” said CMO coach Roy Josol.

Go, hounded by his guards in the perimeter where he is a deadshot, had a hard time extricating himself early. With the leech-like guarding, he failed to score in the first period but found his range in the second to keep the PNP men at bay.

The Muslim All-Stars walked through the tightrope before hacking out a 108-99 victory over a tough LTO squad and arrange a best-of-five finale against early finalist CMO which begins on Friday at the Davao City Recreation Center.


At stake is the prestigious Inday Sara Cup offered by Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte and the cash kitty that goes with the champion. Game 1 is set at 5:30 p.m.


Ming Distancia fired 27 points to lead the All-Stars while Modjer Sangsangan added 22 markers as the duo hit timely conversions in the endgame to quell the LTO uprising. High-flying Jerry Caminade led all scorers with 30 and slotman Allan Ardenio contributed 16 for the LTO men who were frustrated in their bid to barge into the finals.


Friday’s championship will be a grudge rematch of the tightly-contested series between the two teams who also locked horns last month in a winner-take-all series won by CMO in three matches.


“We always look forward to meeting the All-Stars because it is always a tough match,” said Christopher “Bong” Go, the Mayor’s executive assistant who will be a marked man the moment he steps into the floor.

The City Mayor's Office banked on Christopher "Bong" Go's huge first half production to rout the Davao Muslim All-Stars, 105 - 95, in Game 2 of their Best of seven series, Sunday night, at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Go, the sweet-shooting executive assistant of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, scored 24 of his total 37 points in the first half to almost single-handidly carry CMO for the series leveling victory.

Bullstrong Marvin Mondigo, Dindo Pastor and Melchor Gadiano chipped in 14, 13 and 12 markers respectively for CMO which was up by 11, 54 - 43, at the half and never looked back.

The Muslim All-stars came out strong in the second half behind their run and gun type of play but the Mayor's men had an answer everytime they move closer.

Modjer Sansangan scored 18 points for the Muslim All-Stars who trounced CMO in Game 1, 110 - 103, despite the 34 points output of Go.

The wards of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation president Halila Sudagar managed to trade basket in the early going of the match before Go spearheaded an CMO run to put them in a striking distance.

CMO established an 27 - 19 lead after the first quarter.

Amado Peña had 12 markers for the Muslim All-Stars who missed the services of Game 1 hero Mhing Distancia.

It was the prolific Rizal Memorial College Bulldog guard who made a fade away basket from a broken play in the dying seconds that gave the Muslim All-Stars the lead for good.

IBP White, City cagers boot out foes

IBP White and the City Government of Davao cagers booted out their respective rivals in the 2008 Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Basketball Tournament, Saturday, at the Hall of Justice covered court in Ecoland.

The White team took the lead and never looked back in beating the IBP Orange, 84-79 to secure a spot to the next round while the City Government of Davao marched also the next round via a 96-88 win over IBP Yellow.

City sports coordinator Christopher “Bong” Go found the range again and chalked in 28 points to defeat the team led by prosecutor Emilio “Nonot” Dayanghirang.

The Whites led by lawyer Marvin “Oying” Melodias posted a comfortable lead, 47-34 at the send of the first half and maintained the momentum to secure the victory.

The City dribblers did the same thing by immediately playing strong that kept IBP Yellow trailing.

Go, Gerald Acojedo and Melchor Gadiano teamed up well on the attacks and delivered the goods to outshine the Yellow team.

Torrejas secures win for Liga cagers

Romeo Torrejas sanked the two gift shots to lift Liga ng Barangay over the City Executives, 97-95 in the 2008 Liga-Executive Basketball Series, Thursday night at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Gerald Acojedo fouled Torrejas in the last five seconds that sent the Barangay Captain to the free throw line. He comfortably made the shots to give Liga the lead in the series, three games to two.

Jessiemar Culaste led Liga with 24 points while city sports coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go topscored for the losing side with 32 points.

Three games are scheduled in the 2008 Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Basketball Tournament on Saturday, June 21, at the Hall of Justice covered court.

IBP White, known as the Chinos, takes on IBP Black Coca-Cola at 1:20 p.m., followed by COMELEC Region XI against the DCPO Officers Group at 2:45 p.m. while IBP Yellow faces the Bong Go-led City Government of Davao in the main game at 4 p.m.

The tournament is presented by Mayor Duterte and sanctioned by the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas XI under regional director Regino "Boy" Cua.

Rizal Memorial Colleges upset the Ateneo de Davao University, 102-96 to win the 2008 EDSA Anniversary Basketball Tournament, Saturday night, at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Hernan Dejito topscored for RMC with 32 points while Richard Madelo led the losing side with the same output.

PSC Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez awarded the prizes to the winners.

CMO, GSO win anew

The City Mayor’s Office cruised to its third win and the General Services Office tallied its second victory in the Davao Inter-Government Agency Basketball Tournament, Sunday night, at the Davao City Recreation Center.

CMO remained unbeaten after trouncing Pagcor, 101-82 with main gunner Christopher “Bong” Go leading the scoring department with 19 baskets.

The Mayors extended the lead in the third quarter and kept the momentum en route to victory.

GSO, on the other hand, disappointed the Sangguniang Panlungsod, 94-92.

Bong Aleman topscored for GSO with 20 points with Titoy Halili helping with 18 baskets.

GSO started on a high note but started to slow down in the fourth quarter and the SP dribblers began to slice the lead.

But the cagers of Atty.Marvin “Oying” Melodias held on to the slim lead to remain unbeaten in two starts.

Go ignites, Executives force Game 7

Intense game took place on Friday night as the Executives escaped from the brink of defeat and forced a Game 7 in the Executive-Legislative Basketball Tournament Season 14 at the Davao City Recreation Center.
So intense it was as Game 6 ended in double overtime and the Executives tied the series at 3-3, via a 119-118 victory, bouncing from the 105-112 setback in Game 5.
City Sports Coordinator Christopher “Bong” Go scored nine straight points including a clutch three-pointer in the second extra period that set the tone and crushed the fighting hearts of the Legislators.
The Legislators could have wrapped up the game and annexed the Season 14 crown but Go and the Executives fought as if there was no tomorrow.
The Legislators outscored the Executives in the second half with Aldrin Casado leading the scoring charge by canning in 13 of his 25 points but Go and Ariel Bonleon quickly responded to catch up with their rivals.
“I think I just lucky with my shots. But we expect the Legislators to fight back, very hard, in Game 7,” said Go.

Atty.Oying Melodias and Christopher "Bong" Go will parade their squads in the Davao Inter-Government Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Melodias and the GSO squad collide with the Department of Public Works and Highways at 4:30 p.m. while Go and the CMO dribblers battle the City Treasurer's Office of Ojek Riola at 6 p.m.

The teams joined the tournament to prepare for the 71st Araw ng Dabaw Sportsfest.

Barecom, SDD clinic in Toril

The Basketball Referees Commission (Barecom) of the BAP-Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas
and the Davao City Sports Development Division jointly conducted a three-day basketball
seminar in Barangay Dumoy, Toril held over the weekend.

Veteran referee and lawyer Francis Calatrava, Barecom Provincial Commissioner, led in the
conduct of the seminar with the assistance of Bert Malinao of the Sports Development
Division.

The basics of officiating, coaching and handling the game were among the topics discussed
and the coaches took part also in the drills.

City Sports Coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go approved the holding of the clinic to update
local coaches of the developments of the No.1 sport in Davao.

"This is one way of helping our coaches get the necessary information for them to become
better coaches. And we would like to thank the BAP-SBP and the participants for making the
event successful," said Go, who is also the Executive Assistant of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

Jilliard de Guzman came up with another sterling performance by drilling in 35 points to
lead the Legislators past the Executives, 112-105 in overtime in Game 5 of the
Executive-Legislative Basketball Tournament Season 14 at the Davao City Recreation Center.
Aldrin Casado was a big help when he contributed 33 baskets.
Arthur Caminade sent the game into over time when he picked the the loose ball and found
himself open for a clear shot, 95-95.
City Sports Coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go had another off night with only five three-pointers and coming up with a double-digit figure only in the fourth quarter. But he led the Executives with 32 points.
The Legislators lead the series, 3-2 and Game 6 is scheduled on Friday.

The City Mayor’s Office engaged the Police Regional Office in a hotly-contested Game 3 but the City Hall-based cagers prevailed, 86-79 to win the 5th RRD-AFP/PNP Basketball Finals, 2-1, Saturday night, at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Joswe Torregosa sparked the run for PRO XI at the start of the fourth quarter to cut CMO’s lead to just four points, 63-67, eight minutes and 16 seconds left.

PRO XI’s Geramel Merano stepped up in the last six minutes but Ariel Bonleon, Elias Resurreccion and Melchor Gadiano responded for CMO to stretch the lead, 80-72, 1:49 remaining.

Torregosa, who was awarded the most valuable player trophy, came back with back-to-back shots, 76-82, 49 seconds remaining and Resty Go buried a three-point shot, 79-82, 38 ticks left but Marvin Mondigo scored an undergoal stab, 84-79, 31 seconds remaining.

Time was no longer on the side for men of PRO XI Director Andres Caro II who were forced to foul CMO that sent Dindo Pastor and City Sports Coordinator Christopher “Bong” Go to the free throw lines.

Go, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s Executive Assistant, sealed the victory for CMO with a gift shot, 86-79.

Go led CMO with 24 points while Torregosa hit 15 for PRO XI.

Prizes were awarded to the winners right after Game 3 of the tournament presented by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Go and the CMO’s cash prize was distributed to the winners as bonus.

Davao City Police Office’s Rodolfo Bustaleño, who suited up for PRO XI in the last tournament, led members of the Mythical Five that included Bureau of Fire Protection’s Kristian Coquilla, a former CMO cager, PRO XI’ s Resty Go, a former spitfire at the Holy Cross of Davao College, CMO’s Ariel Bonleon and Ferdinand Pastor.

Bureau of Fire Protection placed third, followed by Davao City Police Office at fourth, Regional Mobile Group at fifth, 22nd Company at sixth, 28th Infantry Battalion at seventh and 10th Infantry Division at eighth.

City Sports Coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go bailed out the City Mayor's Office of trouble when he sparked in the fourth quarter to avenge their Game 1 loss and level the series to 1-1 against the Police Regional Office XI, 98-79 in the 5th RRD-AFP/PNP Basketball Finals, Thursday night, at the Davao City Recreation Center.



Go, who is also Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's Executive Assistant, drained four three-point shots of his 16 total points in the fourth quarter alone to lead CMO with 31 baskets.



Vicente Reyes scored only 11 and Joswe Torregosa, who has been leading the scoring chores for his squad, was limited to only 10 points. PRO XI had a well distributed scoring machine but their veterans failed to put up the needed scores to overtake CMO.



Roy Bangkas helped Go with 14 points and 10 points each from Marvin Mondigo and Dindo Pastor.



PRO XI worked harder in the fourth quarter but time was not on their side that paved the way for CMO to equalize the series and force a rubbermatch.

The City Mayor's Office tries to bounce back against the Police Regional Office XI this afternoon (December 20, Thursday), 5 p.m., in Game 2 of the 5th RRD-AFP/PNP Basketball finals at the Davao City Recreation Center.

PRO-XI defeated CMO, 82-76 in Game 1 on Tuesday night.

Joswe Torregosa did the biggest damage for CMO when he canned in 18 points and the CMO's main gunner, Bong Go, could not find his shooting range and was limited to only 18 baskets that night.

Police Regional Office XI took Game 1 of the 5th RRD-AFP/PNP Basketball finals, Tuesday night, at the Davao City Recreation Center.

PRO XI regrouped in the final half to beat the City Mayor's Office, 82-76 and Joswe Torregosa led the scoring charge to lead with 18 points.

City Sports Coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go made the same output but had an off night by making only four points in the final half after a good start in the first quarter.

PRO XI rallied in the fourth quarter by outscoring CMO, 28-19. Dindo Pastor tried to rally the CMO five and pumped in 12 points but PRO XI employed a better defense.

The 287th IB plays the 10th ID this afternoon at 5 p.m. for the 7th and 8th places while the 22nd Company collides with Regional Mobile Group at 6:30 p.m. for teh 5th and 6th spots of the tournament presented by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
