Batang Talk N’ Text-Quezon City defeats Powerade Batang Bacolod, Davao bets beat Baguio cagers

Defending champion Batang Talk N’ Text-Quezon City defeated Powerade Batang Bacolod, 97-75 Wednesday and secured its place in the cross-over semifinals of the Powerade Batang PBA Pilipinas Championship at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Jolo Mendoza, a 12-year old student from Ateneo de Manila, led all scorers with 46 points. He accounted for all of his team’s 30 points in the opening quarter as the Batang Texters surged to an 18-point advantage then coasted the rest of the way.

It was their second straight victory in Group B and seventh overall including a five-game sweep en route to a three-peat of the Batang PBA Summer League championship last week.

Batang TnT-QC goes for a sweep of its group when it faces Powerade Batang Davao in their schedule 1 p.m. match Thursday at the close of the classification round at the old San Juan Gym.

B-Meg Derby Ace-Caloocan and Powerade Batang Cebu also posted their second straight wins and clinched the two semifinal berths up for grabs in the Group B.

Aljun Melecio turned in 22 points and Patrick Cagara added 14 for the Batang Llamados who dumped Powerade Batang Batangas, 71-32, while Mark Berame tallied 29 markers to show the way for Powerade Batang Cebu which defeated Powerade Batang Zamboanga, 47-36.

The Batang Llamados and the Batang Cebu battle each other at 8:30 a.m Thursday to determine the top qualifier of their group.

Powerade Batang Davao held off Powerade Batang Baguio, 50-32, for its first win in Group A. Batang Baguio fell to 0-2.

BATANG PBA FINALS UP SUNDAY

Two-time defending champion Batang Talk N’ Text-Quezon City will take a shot at the record books on Sunday in the 2010 Coca-Cola Batang PBA Summer League Finals at the Araneta Colisuem.

Only Batang B-Meg Derby Ace-Caloocan City stands in the way of the Batang Texters in their quest for a rare “three-peat” in the annual tournament confined to kids 9-12 years old.

The title duel is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. following the 12 noon battle for third place between Batang Coca-Cola-Marikina and Batang Rain or Shine- San Juan.

Both from Group A, TnT-QC has defeated Derby Ace-Caloocan City, 69-58, in the classification round and remains the heavy favorite to clinch its fourth championship overall in seven editions of the event.

Adding color to the title showdown is the expected shootout between Batang Texters’ Jolo Mendoza and Batang Llamados’ Aljun Melecio – both candidates for the league’s Most Valuable Player trophy.

Mendoza, a sixth grader from the Ateneo de Manila University and son of former UP Fighting Maroon and Shell assistant coach Jigs Mendoza, is TnT-QC’s top gunner averaging 31 points a game.

Melecio, also a sixth grader from Bukidnon Faith Christian Inc., is the leading scorer of Derby Ace-Caloocan City with an average of 24 points a game.

Being the top two teams of the 2010 Coca-Cola Batang PBA Summer League, Batang TnT-Quezon City and Batang Derby Ace-Caloocan City also earned seats to the 2010 Powerade-Batang PBA National Finals which will start on Tuesday.

Joining the two teams are six other squads which emerged champions in their respective Batang PBA regional eliminations.

The six regional champions are the La Salle Titans of Bacolod, USC South of Cebu, Ateneo de Davao, Batang PBA Blue Team of Zamboanga, Baguio All-Star Kubong Sawali and B-Meg St. Bridget of Batangas.

The Batang Texters are also the defending champion of the Powerade Batang PBA National Finals.

Ateneo de Davao advances to Batang PBA Nat'l C'ships

Ateneo de Davao High School advanced to the Batang PBA National Championship after beating arch-rival Holy Child School of Davao, 80-78 last May 18 at the Gaisano South Citimall Sky gym.

The national final is on May 26 to 31 in Manila.

The PBA Davao eliminations were backed by the Duterte Basketball League, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas-XI.

The PBA will bankroll Ateneo's participation in Manila.

AGRO Industrial College of Davao Foundation and Holy Cross of Davao College beat separate rivals Wednesday night to arrange a cross-over semifinal's meeting in the 15th Araw ng Buhangin Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship at the Buhangin gym.

The Agro Sailors of coach Mat Cubero, reigning Gaisano Cup title-holder defeated the newly-crowned first Orange Generation Cup champion Brokenshire College of Davao, 95-75, while the Crusaders crushed the undermanned Holy Child School of Davao College, 99-81.

The Sailors will face the Adel Nobleza-mentored Crusaders tonight at 7 p.m. while the other semifinal match is set at 8:30 p.m. pitting the early-qualifier Jose Maria College against Philippine Collegiate Champions League Davao champion Ateneo de Davao University.

The winners on Friday night will vie for the title on Feb. 14 at 8:30 p.m. while the losing teams will play for third place at 7 p.m. It will be followed by the awarding of cash prizes totaling to P50,000 plus trophies.

The event is organized by the Buhangin Barangay Council headed by Barangay Capt. Jimmy Salvador and sponsored by the Sanggunian Kabataan under chair Fe Gonzales.

It is supported by the Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc. and sanctioned by the National Referees Commission (Narecom).

RMC stuns Agro, plays Ateneo in EDSA Anniversary Basketball finals tonight

Rizal Memorial Colleges stunned Agro Industrial Foundation College, 99-98 to advance to the finals of the EDSA Anniversary Basketball Tournament tonight, 6:30 p.m., at the Davao City Recreation Center.

RMC will face Ateneo de Davao University, winner over Holy Cross of Davao College, in the other knockout game last night.

Mojer Sansangan scored the winning basket, 99-98 with 1.64 seconds left in the final quarter.

PSC Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez will arrive today to personally grace the championship game tonight.

After the championship game, the awarding ceremony will immediately follow to be assisted by Davao City Sports Coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go.

Brokenshire five defeats Ateneo, 69-58

Brokenshire College relied on speed to defeat Ateneo de Davao University, 69-58 in the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Davao City Women's Basketball Eliminations, Sunday, at the University of Mindanao Matina Campus.

Cindy Cajegas orchestrated the win for the Leopards by engineering the plays from the start to the finish.

The Lady Blue Knights have to rely on Cielito Solon who in many occasions find herself well guarded by the Leopards.

The Annie Manaay-coached Brokenshire built a 20-point lead, 56-36 in the third quarter and the Cholo Elegino-mentored Lady Blue Knights tried to get back, 63-53, 2:48 left in the fourth quarter but time was not on their side for thei second setback.

Rizal Memorial College Lady Wildcats, on the other hand, ripped the Davao Doctor's College, 75-54 while University of the Immaculate Conception men stopped STI College, 81-53.

Games will resume on February 2 at the Rizal Memorial Colleges gym, according to PRISAA Davao Executive Director Joaquin Sarabia.

The Davao City winner will advance to the Regional Meet in March against teams from Davao Province, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental

Youth basketball tryouts on Saturday

The much-awaited tryouts for the National Basketball Training Center gets going on Saturday, January 12, at the Ateneo de Davao University Sports Complex in Matina.
NBTC Davao Commissioner lawyer Manny Nitorreda said the tryouts will be personally handled by NBTC Program Director Eric Altamirano, the former PBA coach, and Alex Compton.
First session starts at 7:30 a.m. for the 14 to 15 years old participants while the second session is from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. for 16 to 17 years old cagers.
Nitorreda said a maximum of 40 players from each age bracket will be selected to undergo training in Davao City once a week until they cover the 60 hours on individual skills and a minimum of 40 hours on team concepts for a period of one year.
The players who make it to the regular training program can be considered for membership in the national youth teams.

Ateneo enters GS Cup finals after nine years

The Ateneo de Davao University Blue Knights finally entered the Gaisano South Cup College Division 1 finals after nine long years.

Inspired by the presence of ADDU President Fr. Antonio Samson, S.J., the Blue Knights stopped the Holy Cross of Davao College Crusaders, via a nail biting 80-75 win on Saturday night at the jampacked Gaisano South Sky gym.

Coach Cholo Elegino, who for a long time learned the rudiments of coaching from former Ateneo head coach William “Butch” Ramirez, said they are ready for the finals on December 9.

The Jose Maria College Kings and the Agro-Industrial Foundation College Sailors square off for the other final’s slot on November 29.

“Both teams are tough contenders. But we have worked so hard this year. I guarantee that we will be ready. We did not wait for nine years and become a bride’s maid,” said Elegino, who in September steered the Blue Knights to victory in the 2007 Mabutas Cup finals against the Crusaders.

Miguel Solitario powered the Blue Knights to victory with 25 points, 13 rebounds and two assists in the semifinal round of the tournament sponsored by Rexona, Milo, Axe Sunsport and sanctioned by BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Regional Director Regino “Boy” Cua.

Kirk James Blanco led the Crusaders with 20 points.

In Division 2, the MATS Navigators defeated Brokenshire College, 84-81 and will meet the winner between AMA Computer College and Holy Child College in the finals.

Assumption College of Davao girls forced a rubber match after trouncing Stella Maris Academy, 75-62. They will meet on December 1 at 1:30 p.m.
