Manny Pacquiao’s Pacman Warriors failed to ride on the crest of their chief backer’s convincing win on Sunday and the home team Montana Pawnshop pulled off a big one before their ecstatic fans as Davao quenched its thirst for the big leagues with a newly-refurbished arena.
Contrasting fates as they turned out to be, still there was no missing the point. Basketball’s happy days are back.
Mayor Rodrigo Duterte formally opened the doors to the new-look Davao City Recreation Center (nee Almendras Gym) in an emotional ceremony marked by the recognition of the city’s sports heroes and the return of big-time tournaments in this basketball-crazy city. After giving his short but heart-tugging speech, the Mayor who will end his term on June, took a bow and the crowd stood up in appreciation.
And unlike the 51,000 paying fans over at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, the capacity crowd that filled the DCRC did not go home frustrated. There was just a lot of making up to do in terms of basketball action. Mayor Duterte watched from the sidelines along with Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta and a host of barangay captains, and Purefoods assistant coach Ronnie Magsanoc.
Action was intense on the hardcourt as the Pacman Warriors were stopped to their toes in a game that almost turned ugly with a near-boxing match. But still, that’s part of basketball. Anyways, Pacman’s squad took it flush on the chin from Laguna’s Team Bida 87-77 for its first loss while the Jewels of Davao walked off proudly with a 91-87 conquest of M.Lhuillier Kwarta Padala.
That and more capped a grandiose opening of the Mayor Rody-Vice Mayor Inday Sara 73rd Araw ng Dabaw Invitational basketball tournament.
If defense was Manny Pacquiao’s main problem on the ring, Team Bida’s defense was also the headache for his Warriors. Former San Miguel Beerman Marlon Legaspi imposed his presence in the paint while Leomer Losentes and Glen Bolocon provided the spark for the Laguna franchise. Together, the troika conspired for 30 markers.
The Warriors were frustrated no end by the pesky defense of Bida even as Jhon Gonzaga caught fire with 16 and Louie Medalla had 13. At crucial stretches in the fourth period, they just could not turn their luck around.
In the nightcap, Montana Pawnshop pulled away from a tight first half with beanpole Fred Canlas scoring off nifty passes inside and then survived a big rally by M. Lhuillier in the final period. The 6-9 Canlas scored 10 points in the third quarter, six of them coming off and-one plays, as the Jewels erected a 61-45 lead, 4:06 left.
Ronald Lamocha, who took over at center when the red-hot Canlas was curiously benched in the fourth, and Donald Tadena preserved the win after the Cebuanos equalized in the fourth period with a scorching run keyed by Ian Saladaga and ex-pro Stephen Padilla. Montana was led by Lamocha with 17, veteran Michael Manigo had 16 and a slew of threading-the-needle feeds, while Canlas and Fernandez added 13 and 12, respectively.
The crowd erupted in frenzy just before the buzzer sounded to end the first half when Lhuillier’s Marlon Basco, another former PBA player, caught the ball on air after a missed jumper and then slammed it home with impunity.
By all indications, the happy days of basketball are here again. (pr)

DBL Finals
Agdao, Calinan do or die Game 3 on Friday
The deciding Game 3 between Agdao District and Calinan District on Friday (June 26) is expected to be a war as both teams go all for the marbles for the 4th Duterte Basketball League (DBL) title.
Defending champ Agdao and Calinan collide in the deciding match of their best of three title showdown at 3:00 p.m. at the Davao City Police Office covered court.
Supporters of both barangay teams are expected to fill up the venue to rafters in the winner-take-all match in hand.
Calinan forged a rubber match game following a 91-89 victory in Game 2 last Sunday. Agdao won Game 1, 99 - 94.
"We won Game 2 and now we have a chance to snatch the title from Agdao in Game 3. We will do it, " Calinan district team manager Barangay councilor Jaime Macatual said.
But he and the entire team members knew it was tough closing out Agdao, which won the title last year with the same line up and had a sterling campaign this year.
Calinan, which is determined to end its three years title drought on its first finals appearance, is expected to maintain its game plan by employing tough defense to the offense oriented Agdao squad.
Armed with vast experience, Agdao know exactly what to expect in situation like this.
"We will do everything to keep the crown, " said Agdao team manager Nicanor Ortiz, Barangay Leon Garcia administrator.
MVP candidates Dela Pena brothers, Gerson and Rya, are expected to come out big for Agdao which is bent on getting a back to back title.
Calinan will put its hands full on Game 2 hero Roselio Alconcor who shone in the series.
Alconcor hit the winning basket with 5.2 seconds left in Game 2 that kept Calinan's title bid alive.
Expected also to deliver the goods for Calinan are Michael Cayanong, Ruben Mariaga and Dodoy Tocmo.

6:00PM Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr vs. Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware
CAGAYAN DE ORO – Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr shoots for a spot in the Mindanao Division Finals of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference on Thursday night, November 22, when they host the Goldstar Hardware Duterte Agilas-Davao at the Xavier University Gym starting at 6:00PM.
MisOr of MVBA chairman Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Bong Abad took Game One of the best-of-three series, 92-84, at the Almendras Gym in Davao City last November 19. A tall order faces the Agilas of Coach Rhoel Josol, as they have yet to defeat MisOr this conference, losing their two classification round meetings, 89-100 and 82-87.
Bull strong Boboy Berami has been the best performer for the Agilas this conference churning out 15.6 points per game and on his broad shoulders rests the fate of the franchise. The rest of the team have to help out Berami, especially gunners Jonjon Gonzaga (11.3 ppg) and Fred Sampilo (9.8 ppg) and playmaker Bob Cozy Ilanga (9.8 ppg).
However, the X-factor for the Agilas could be the good play of Wynsjohn Te and center James Razon. The duo submitted MVBA career-highs in points in Game One, giving the team more options in Game Two and extend the series to a Game Three scheduled for on Friday, November 23 also at the Xavier Gym.
Reigning MVBA Player of the Week Anton Villoria will again lead MisOr’s defense of its home turf. In MisOr’s last two games against the Agilas, Villoria proved to be the biggest thorn on the wings of the Agilas, knocking in the killer shots en route to averaging 15.0 points in those two games.
Also seen to play big roles and take MisOr to its third straight Mindanao Division finals appearance are centers Nathaniel Cruz (12.8 ppg) and Frank Nailon (8.5 ppg), shooter Lowell Briones (9.2 ppg) and point guard Mark Moreño (7.7 ppg).
Already earning outright berths in the Division Finals by virtue of topping their respective divisions are M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba and the MP Warriors-GenSan of Manny Pacquiao and Coach Ramon Pido.
They will face the winner of their division’s semifinal series in a best-of-three showdown. The two division champions will then slug it out in the best-of-three MVBA Finals tentatively calendared for the first week of December.(Anthony E. Servinio)
