Liga Dabaw resumes Saturday


FOUR games are on tap when the Liga Dabaw resumes on Saturday at the Davao City Recreation Center.

The ABS-CBN will go up against The Scribes at 1:30 p.m. in the inter-sectoral category followed by the inter-college collision between the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) and Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Bulldogs at 3 p.m.


Another collegiate match-up pits the Agro Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) Sailors against San Pedro College at 4:30 p.m. while the commercial battle between CM Farm and Virus is set at 6 p.m.

The Mats College of Technology was set to play against Emar as of Wednesday press time. It was to be followed by the Liaisons and Clergy encounter in the evening.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas-sanctioned league is the first of its kind held in the city. It aims to liven up the local basketball scene and at the same time discover local talents.

It will also give away scholarship grants for selected poor children. (MLSA)

Agro, Holy Cross beat rivals to face each other in semis on Friday night

AGRO Industrial College of Davao Foundation and Holy Cross of Davao College beat separate rivals Wednesday night to arrange a cross-over semifinal's meeting in the 15th Araw ng Buhangin Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship at the Buhangin gym.

The Agro Sailors of coach Mat Cubero, reigning Gaisano Cup title-holder defeated the newly-crowned first Orange Generation Cup champion Brokenshire College of Davao, 95-75, while the Crusaders crushed the undermanned Holy Child School of Davao College, 99-81.

The Sailors will face the Adel Nobleza-mentored Crusaders tonight at 7 p.m. while the other semifinal match is set at 8:30 p.m. pitting the early-qualifier Jose Maria College against Philippine Collegiate Champions League Davao champion Ateneo de Davao University.

The winners on Friday night will vie for the title on Feb. 14 at 8:30 p.m. while the losing teams will play for third place at 7 p.m. It will be followed by the awarding of cash prizes totaling to P50,000 plus trophies.

The event is organized by the Buhangin Barangay Council headed by Barangay Capt. Jimmy Salvador and sponsored by the Sanggunian Kabataan under chair Fe Gonzales.

It is supported by the Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc. and sanctioned by the National Referees Commission (Narecom).

RMC upsets Ateneo, 102-96, rules EDSA Anniversary Basketball Tournament

Rizal Memorial Colleges upset the Ateneo de Davao University, 102-96 to win the 2008 EDSA Anniversary Basketball Tournament, Saturday night, at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Hernan Dejito topscored for RMC with 32 points while Richard Madelo led the losing side with the same output.

PSC Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez awarded the prizes to the winners.

Agro-Industrial Foundation College placed third while Holy Cross of Davao College landed fourth in the two-night tournament also supported by Davao City Sports Coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go and BAP-SBP XI Regional Director Regino "Boy" Cua.
