Davao City’s Ateneo de Davao University outlasted Southern City College of Zamboanga City, 86-58 at the start of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champion’s League/Duterte Basketball League Mindanao Finals, Tuesday afternoon, at the Gaisano South Sky gym.

The Blue Knights, winner of the Davao City eliminations at the expense of multi-titled University of Mindanao, started slow but found their chemistry in the final half to pull away.

Coach Cholo Elegino was even surprised with the outcome of the score when he asked his injured player Miguel Solitaria. “I am surprised with the score but we just made the correct adjustments,” said Elegino.

Southern City College of Zamboanga was the National PRISAA Champion in 2005 and 2008 but its top players have trooped to Manila where the big tournaments are organized. “But majority of the players are still there. Luckily, we had a good start,” added Elegino.

Richard Madelo topscored for Ateneo with 20 points while Jaybee Porlares led Zamboanga with 22 baskets.

Holy Trinity College of Gen.Santos City is still playing Cagayan de Oro College of Cagayan de Oro City in the second game as of press time.

The tournament is organized by the PCCL under tournament chairman Joe Lipa and sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Regino “Boy” Cua with the support of Smart, PLDT, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte.
