Brokenshire whips Holy Child; PWC beats UIC
UNDEFEATED Brokenshire College of Davao continued its winning ways by stopping the Holy Child School of Davao College, 94-74 to remain on top in the Senior Division of the first Orange Generation Cup basketball tournament last Saturday at the USEP gym..
It was the fourth straight win by Brokenshire while Holy Child suffered its first loss in three outings.
Five of Brokenshire coach Arnulf Rojas’ key players all scored in double figures. Arnold Sison led with 18 points followed by Daryl John Contigo with 17, Christian Joy Edralin 16, Hallyric Damicog 15 and Paul Anthony Tenaur 14.
Tenaur, Pagas and Edralin combined for 18 points in the first quarter as Brokenshire ignited a 25-16 bomb. But the Reds of coach Roger Rabago came back strong in the next canto as Gean Carlo Paredes hit a jumper to tie the game for the second and the last time at 31-all.
He then sank two free throws to finally grab the lead for the Reds, 33-31. But that was only the closest attempt that the Reds could ever make.
Edralin buried a triple to give back the driver’s seat for Brokenshire, 34-33, and Sison also made 11 points in the third quarter to give the Reds a 10-point deficit, 70-60.
Paredes remained scoreless in the fourth quarter but still finished with a game-high 24 points for the Reds. Rex Sinilong added 16 followed by six-footers Xavier Aguitez and Alfred Christian Samantilla with 12 apiece.
PWC BEATS UIC, 66-59
In the other game, Philippine Women’s College bungled a 14-point lead in the final quarter but still managed to escape with a 66-59 win over the University of the Immaculate Conception.
PWC improved its record to 2-2 win-loss card while UIC dropped to a 1-2 slate.
PWC enjoyed a 58-44 lead after the third quarter as Jayriff James Luzero made eight of his game-high 21 points. Miguel Angelo Pacheco and Ed Paolo Lapaz also both exploded with 11 and 14 points, respectively in the first half to power PWC to a 40-31 advantage.
But they were suddenly silent in the final quarter with Luzero only scoring just two points. The only other scorer for PWC coach Jonas Mark Aquino was Osmer Chan, who only made six points but was still enough to keep his team alive.
John Renn Amantiad led UIC with 20 points with three triples, two in the final quarter.
In the Inter-Company division, Yuchengco Group of Companies posted its second win in three outings by routing www.express, 73-57 in the main game.
Playing coach Adel Nobleza powered YGC with 29 big points, 12 of them scored in the first quarter for a 25-19 lead. But YGC allowed the Forwarders to rally and cut their deficit to just one point, 31-30 in the second canto.
Nobleza then went back to work, hitting 10 points, while Jose Nino Leones added five of his 13 markers in the third quarter to widen their lead, 52-44 and never looked back. Gilbert Aquino and Merwin Ramos led the Forwarders’ losing cause with 13 and 11, respectively.
Meanwhile, PWC demolished Immanuel School of Davao, 64-49 while Thompson Christian School won over Stella Maris Academy by walkover both in the Cadet division.
PWC posted its third win against one loss, while SMA only took its first loss and is already assured of a seat in the semifinal round with a 3-1 card.
Gabriel Espina led PWC with 16 points followed by Ronaldo “Dongkoy” Jumawan and Christian Reyes with 14 and 13, while for Immanuel it was Jasper Harvey Mesiona with 22 markers.
The league is organized by the Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc. in coordination with the Multi-sectoral Organization of Volunteers for Entrepreneurship (MOVE).
