The Davao City Recreation Center (formerly Almendras Gym) was packed with basketball fanatics as Phoenix Petroleum ended the first season of the Trip Mo Phoenix Fuels Basketball Cup last August 28.

Team Cyclomax Titan emerged as champion with only a shot ahead against this season’s 1st runner-up Accelerate Supreme. The score was 78-76. Teams Accelerate Vega and Zoelo Extreme landed on the third and fourth place.

Klyde Batilo of Cyclomax Titan was proclaimed as this season’s Most Valuable Player as his teammate Eric Patrick Dulay II, along with Accelerate Supreme’s Vernon Miguel Boneon and Jeuchrist Binoya, Accelerate Vega’s Rhaffy Torno and Zoelo Extreme’s Ralph San Miguel, were named the basketball cup’s Mythical Five.

The young basketball players received an additional treat when PBA player Peter June Simon of B-Meg Llamados helped award the winners. “I hope someday many DavaeƱos will enter the PBA,” PJ said in his inspirational message. He started his basketball career at the University of Mindanao where he studied. Later, he joined the Metropolitan Basketball Association and played under the Davao Eagles.

Phoenix Petroleum Philippines is set to bring a better basketball cup with the Trip Ko Phoenix Fuels Basketball Cup Season 2. This time it will be played by 13 -15 year old players later this year.

The Trip Ko Phoenix Fuels Basketball Cup opened on July 2 with six teams.  Each team was composed of 15 players of age 16 and under, and mostly from public schools. It was organized in partnership with the city government of Davao and is sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Region 11.

The basketball cup is part of Phoenix’s advocacy to promote sports. Phoenix Petroleum is a partner of the Philippine Basketball Association. The company also holds the Phoenix Run Series, which has been to Davao City, Compostela Valley, and Tagum City. Phoenix will also bring seven elite runners from Davao City to the Summit CamSur International Marathon on September 25, 2011 at the CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC).(pr)

ASIA, WILLIAMS TO PLAY IN ASIAD

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Board finally

granted the request of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to

tap two of its star players for the RP-Smart Gilas team, paving the

way for Asi Taulava and Kelly Williams’ stint to the Asian Games in

Guangzhou, China this November.

The league’s Board of Governors under chairman Rene Pardo

unanimously approved the appeal of the country’s governing body for

basketball during the first day of its planning session in this lively

capital city of Thailand.

“The PBA Board has acceded to the request of the Samahang

Basketbol ng Pilipinas to help in the quest of our national team to

the Asian Games,” announced commissioner Chito Salud at the end of the

Board’s initial meeting that lasted close to six hours.

A third player in James Yap however, begged off from suiting up

for the national team, citing personal reasons and the recent surgery

performed on him to remove a polyp on his nose.

“James has personally begged off to play dahil dun sa mga

dinadanas niya ngayon,” said Pardo of B-Meg’s main man.

With Yap out of the national squad, the league said it’s up to

the SBP to fill up the slot left by the 6-foot-2 gunner out of

University of the East.

Patrick Gregorio, Board representative of Talk `N Text, which

also sponsors the national team, said coach Rajko Toroman will be the

one to decide which player is going to take the place of Yap.

Toroman and the rest of the nationals are currently in China

competing in the 4th Asian Basketball Association Club Championship.

Both Salud and Pardo also stressed they plan to sit down with

SBP officials, led by president Manny V. Pangilinan, to identify the

specific role the PBA will have to play in the overall program of the

basketball body.

The league used to be in the forefront of forming and training

the national team to elite competitions such as the Asian Games and

FIBA-Asia men’s basketball tournament, but then slowly faded away from

it the moment the RP-Smart Gilas team was put into place.

At the same time, Salud made it clear that Chot Reyes’ stint as

special assistant to Toroman is only until the duration of the

Guangzhou Asiad.

Also approved by the Board was the improvised rules on

officiating Salud and his technical group made for application in the

coming 36th season.

The new commissioner said he is ready for any criticisms that

may arise out of the set up, stressing that it `comes with the

territory.’

But he said he’s confident that it `will work out not

immediately, but sooner.”

Other agenda tackled and subsequently given the imprimatur by

the Board were the employment of a 14-man lineup for each team and the

right to field in all 14 players during the game, and a 6-4 height

limit to imports seeing action in the second conference and the

application of a handicap import system in the season-ending

tournament.

Aside from Pardo, elected as other officers of the Board were

Mamerto Mondragon (Rain or Shine) as vice chairman and JB Baylon

(Powerade) as treasurer.

Other Board members present during the two-day planning

session were former chairmen Joaqui Trillo (Alaska) and Ely Capacio

(San Miguel), Robert Non (Ginebra), Gregorio, Ramon Segismundo

(Meralco), Johan Ramos (Air21), Manny Mendoza (Barako Bull) and

one-time chairman Buddy Encarnado.(pr)

“SBP BOLSTERS YOUTH BASKETBALL PROGRAM”

After its very successful Nokia-Tao National Basketball Training Center for the elite youth, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is strengthening its grassroots youth programs through 3 forthcoming tournaments which the national sports association for basketball is pursuing.

Spearheaded by its Youth Commission, the SBP is sending a delegation to the 1st Asian Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia to compete in the Beach Basketball event from October 22-26, 2008. The Smart-Pilipinas 3 on 3 team will be composed of 4 up and coming young players of the Youth pool including 3 players who were part of the RP Youth team that competed recently in the Asian Jr. Men’s Championship in Tehran, Iran. They are Joseph Tolentino, Samuel Marata, Papot Paredes and Arthur De La Cruz. The delegation will be led by SBP Executive Director Noli Eala, SBP Youth Commission Chairman Nic Jorge, Team Manager and Smart Marketing Head Danilo Mojica and Head Coach Britt Reroma.

The Smart-Pilipinas National team, which is in the group of Japan and Thailand, is hoping to provide the Philippine delegation with a medal in the newly introduced biennial event. “The SBP is honored to be part of this historic inaugural event. The boys have prepared hard and we are hopeful we will perform well,” Jorge said.

Aside from its participation in the Beach Games, the SBP is busy preparing to stage two major youth tourneys in 2009. These are the National Junior Championship slated to be held in Baguio City from January 11-18, 2009 and the National 33 Open Championship to be held in the summer of 2009.

The NJC will feature 20 of the best high school teams of the country vying for the national inter secondary crown. The top 20 teams will be taken from the various regions of the SBP through provincial and regional eliminations. The NJC will be the first national tournament directly managed and organized by the SBP through its Regional Directors and Area Heads.

On the other hand, the National 33 Open Championship will pit the best 3 on 3 teams all over the Philippines in various age group categories playing for the first time under FIBA 33 rules. The winners of the Open will be automatically included in the pool that will represent the Philippines in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010.

“These programs are a manifestation of the SBP’s commitment under MVP to long term youth development. The youth sector is a priority area of the SBP. It is our hope that by providing the youth more opportunities for competitive tournaments, we can bolster the future of Philippine basketball for international competitions, “ Eala stated.

FIBA-SBP referees clinic up

Lubomor Kotleba, sports director of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), is conducting a clinic for international referees on Sept. 17 and 18 at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.

Organized by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Inc. through its technical commission, the historic clinic will identify potential candidates, who will undergo a series of tests set by FIBA, for inclusion in the pool of prestigious international referees.

Beefing up the SBP pool of international referees is also another goal of the clinic.

"Those current and former international referees and new candidates duly endorsed by SBP regional directors all over the country are welcome and encouraged to participate in this FIBA clinic," said Perry Martinez, SBP technical committee chairman.

As a refresher course for those interested in attending the Kotelba clinic, the SBP technical commission will be conducting a two-day seminar on Sept. 11 and 12.

"This refresher course shall be used as a basis to determine the preparedness of our Philippine candidates" Martinez said.

For details, call the SBP office at 706-2969 and 706-2970 and look for Jennifer Ann Hernandez for registration.
