Batang BBL-University of Batangas extended its winning roll to five games as it edged B-Meg-SBC, 80-65, in the Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League recently at the St. Bridget College Gym at Batangas City.
Although trailing for three-and-a-half quarters, John Arellano (11 points) and Julius Yap (9 points) powered BBL-UB as the team outscored its opponent to pull off the win in the 18-and-under tournament backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.
Batang BBL-UB now has a 5-0 record in the second round while B-Meg-SBC dropped to a 1-4 record in the tournament also supported by San Miguel Purefoods Company, Smart Communications and Burlington.
The Lipa-based SMART team blasted cellar-dweller Ulam King, 98-60, for a 4-1 card. The victors turned to scorers AJ Cubilla (17 points), Renzo Mojado (14 points), and Denoc Beltran (16 points) to step on the gas early by posting a 20-point lead at 34-14 after the first quarter. Ulam King dropped to a 0-5 card.
In Cagayan de Oro City, Smart-CdO and Oro Grande posted second straight wins each in the second playdate of the CdO leg held at the Xavier University Gym.
Smart-CDO bested B-MEG, 89-68, as Charvi Nemenzo led his team with 15 points followed by Jiovanni Jalaon and Jemerson Bucag, who scored 13 points apiece. Rhodelle Nagac had 17, Francis Jabines 15 and Rosendo Aquino 12 for B-MEG (0-2). In the other game, Oro Grande (2-0) rapped Nutri-C (0-2), 88-79.
The Nokia NBTC D-League aims to be a feeder program for varsity squads and teams catering to leagues such as the UAAP, NCAA, Philippine Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association and the Liga Pilipinas. There will be an NCR champion and a provincial champion as the tournament culminates in May 2010.
