The 2009-10 Jr. NBA Philippines Program presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins reaches its climax this weekend at the Jose Rizal University Gym with the National Training Camp attended by 40 of the most promising young cagers of the land.
US Jr. NBA coach Frank Lopez, NBA Legend BJ Armstrong, formerly of the Chicago Bulls, PBA Legends Ronnie Magsanoc, Benjie Paras, Elmer Cabahug and Cadel Mosqueda will run the camp for the boys aged 12-14 who topped their respective regional selection camps in Cebu, Davao and Manila last March. NBA Asia Senior Vice President and Managing Director Scott Levy is in town to tip off the event.
The NCR and Luzon finalists are: Javier Ricardo Consunji, Emilio Puno and Ferdinand Ravena III from Ateneo de Manila, Kyle Carlos, Mark Framil and Jeremiah Vizmonte of La Salle Green Hills, Alfred Sojulga and Henri Lorenzo Subido of Lourdes School Mandaluyong, Ranbill Angelo Tongco, Hans Sison and Cyle Jowee Lopez of San Beda College, Carl Bueno and Alvin Gerard Ungria of the University of Santo Tomas, Hubert Cani of the University of the East Grade School, Lorenzo Fernando Navarro of St. Francis School, Thristan Laman of Sta Clara School of Antipolo, Shawn Brian Sabordo of the Pateros Catholic School, Noel Joseph Perez of Nineveh Academy of General Trias, Cavite, Arvin Angeles, Jr. of Valenzuela and Lance Villanueva of Marist School, Marikina.
They will face Cebu kids Lorenzo Carampatana, Jarek Mercado, Jessineth Stephen Wahing and Patrick Nigel Go from the Sacred Heart School of the Society of Jesus; John Agustin Pajantoy and Mitchel Vincent Antigua from the University of San Carlos; Bryan Edward Villaruz and Jorine Cercado from the Ateneo de Iloilo; Kirell Brahndon Montalbo from Taytung High School in Bacolod and Noel Villaceran from the San Roque Child Development School in Lapu Lapu City.
Davao kids Henry Asilum and Jefferson James Roxas of the Holy Child School of Davao, Miguel Competente of St. Paul College, Earl Nicole Hiso, Israel Dave Remolar and Carlo Lino Araguez of Stella Maris Academy of Davao, Miguel Paolo Gancio and Sean Patigue of the Ateneo de Davao, Al Rashid Indin of Daniel R Aguinaldo National High School and Troy Senen Macariñas of EMAR Davao City will show that Mindanaoans share the same passion and basketball skills that their Luzon and Visayas counterparts have. The boys are currently billeted at Marriott Manila.
From April 16-18, the young hopefuls will undergo a basketball boot camp that will test their basketball skills, strength, stamina and character via conditioning workouts, transition drills, skills stations and competitive games. Also highlighted in the three-day training camp are the Jr. NBA S.T.A.R. values of Sportsmanship, Teamwork, a positive Attitude and Respect, alongside seminars on proper diet, hydration and supplementation.
On Sunday, April 18, the best eight campers will be chosen from the 40 participants and will be known as the 2009-10 Jr. NBA Philippines Team.
The Jr. NBA program became a nationwide program this year, with camps and clinics held in the NCR, Visayas and Mindanao, reaching over 300 schools across the country and benefiting over 30,000 students, parents and school coaches. Over 130,000 fans experienced the Jr. NBA program via Open Clinics held in Manila last February. All stages of the program are completely free.

PBA Legends, collegiate coaches join Jr. NBA coaching staff
Jr. NBA-appointed coaches Ronnie Magsanoc, Ryan Gregorio, Elmer Cabahug and Al Solis are back for the third consecutive season of the Jr. NBA Philippines Program presented by Hi-Smart Multivitamins. And this time another ex-PBA cager Cadel Mosqueda joins the group to introduce the program to Davao City for the first time.
The NBA’s youth basketball development program, introduced into the country in early 2008 to 16 Metro Manila private and public schools initially, has expanded its reach from 200 schools and 20,000 participants in 2008-09 to 300 schools and approximately 30,000 students in 2009-10. This is the first time that the program will be staged in Davao. It brought the program to Cebu also for the first time last year.
Besides Magsanoc, Gregorio, Cabahug, Solis and Mosqueda, other topnotch local and collegiate coaches have signified their interest to join the coaching staff of this the 2009-2010 Jr. NBA Philippines Program. Some of these are Jamike Jarin, coach of the Ateneo Blue Eaglets; Britt Reroma, San Beda Red Cubs coach; Aboy Castro, varsity coach of the UP Fighting Maroons and Ron Camara, coach of the Ateneo Grade School, among others.
Local school coaches and Filipino boys ages 12 to 14 can register for the program for free through the Jr. NBA event website www.nba.com/jrnba/philippines
“Kids and their parents are inspired to join the program, because they know the NBA fully supports the development of youth basketball in our country. Gregorio added that, “The program is a great boost for youth basketball because the transfer of technology will really expose the kids to the global basketball experience. The 2009 Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Duterte Basketball Clinic gets going today in Barangay Centro, Agdao District.
At least 100 kids are expected to join the two-day clinic which was held last in Barangay San Antonio two weeks ago.
Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) player Cadel Mosqueda and veteran coach Alberto Malinao will lead the group of clinicians from the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) to conduct the clinic.
“The kids who will bring home basketballs courtesy of Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Sara at the end of the clinic will be taught the basic fundamentals of the sport that include proper shooting, dribbling and passing, " SDD-CMO said in a statement.
Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Sara wants the children in the locality to actively engage into sports at an early age, believing the value of sports to make difference in young lives and an effective tool to combat negative influences and behaviours, the statement added.
The clinic, a component of the Duterte Basketball League (DBL) that organized tournaments for Christians, Muslims and Lumads in the city, is conducted to give the youth an avenue to engage in sports at an early age.
In Brgy. San Antonio, A total of 150 young basketball enthusiasts have joined the clinic.
The clinics have benefitted thousands of boys and girls from 184 barangays in Davao City since 2003.

A total of 150 boys and girls have joined the 2009 Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Duterte Basketball Clinic last weekend in Barangay San Antonio, Agdao District.
The kids, who received free basketballs at the end of the clinic, were taught the basic fundamentals of the sport from a group of clinician from the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) led by former PBA player Cadel Mosqueda and veteran clinician Alberto Malinao.
The barangay council led by Brgy. Captain Roger Galido and the parents thanked Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Sara for staging the clinic in their barangay.
"The kids were very happy to receive their basketball's after the clinic. But the more important thing is they have learned the proper way of playing the sport," said Galido
The clinic, a component of the Duterte Basketball League (DBL) that organized tournaments for Christians, Muslims and Lumads in the city, will be held next in Barangay San Antonio, Agdao District on July 11 - 12.

Former Philippine Basketball Association and Metropolitan Basketball Association player Cadel Mosqueda and veteran coach Alberto Malinao will spearhead the group of clinicians from the Sports Development Division of the City Mayors Office.
They will teach young boys and girls the basics of shooting, dribbling and passing and simple plays and drills.
" The basics of dribbling and shooting that include the proper shooting form will be tackled in the first day while the fundamentals of passing and other drills will be discussed on the final day," SDD-CMO said in a statement.
Some 100 participants are expected to take part in the two-day clinic that does not only help develop skills in basketball, but also personality development.

50 patients attend RRD basketball clinic at Rehab Center
Davao City’s drug rehabilitation center patients received a different kind of treatment for two days when the Mayor RRD basketball clinicians paid them a visit, recently, at Bago Oshiro.
Ex-PBA and MBA player Cadel Mosqueda and the rest of basketball clinicians taught them the proper exercises, ball handling, passing and dribbling drills.
Around 50 patients took part in the activity that gave them lessons about proper positioning during actual games for them to truly enjoy playing the sport because of the skills they have acquired.
Mosqueda personally led the conduct of the sessions with the assistance of the Sports Development Division staff.
The RRD basketball clinics have been conducted in the barangays for years and benefitted thousands of boys and girls.
Christopher “Bong” Go, Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte’s executive assistant, hopes that the patients will continue to work on their exercises and drills to help them in their recovery process.

Basketball clinicians will be in Barangay Balingaeng, Tugbok District for the next leg of the Mayor RRD Basketball Clinic on September 18 to 19.
Young boys and girls will be taught by long-time PBA player Cadel Mosqueda and basketball staff of the Sports Development Division led by veteran clinician Alberto Malinao the basics of the sport.
The proper ways of dribbling, shooting and passing the ball as well as on how to create simple plays for them to enjoy the game are among the areas to be taken up during the two-day clinic.
The clinics, which started in 2003, have benefitted more than 5,000 young boys and girls including those in the far-flung areas to encourage the youth to engage in sports at an early age.

Free RRD basketball clinic on Saturday
The Mayor RRD Basketball Clinic for the youth gets going on Saturday, 7:30 a.m., at San Lorenzo covered court in Brgy.Pampanga.
Former PBA player Cadel Mosqueda will handle the two-day free basketball lessons.
The basics of dribbling, shooting and passing as well as simple plays and exercises will be taught to the participants.
Cadel, Alberto Malinao and other clinicians have been conducting the clinic to teach the youth the basics of the sport as well hear lessons on the importance of engaging in sports activities at an early age.

130 kids join free RRD basketball clinic in Toril
More than 100 boys and girls took part in the 2008 Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Basketball Clinic, held over the weekend, at the Brgy.Toril gym.
The 130 participants were taught of the basics of the sport like the proper way to dribble, pass and shoot the ball by former PBA cager Cadel Mosqueda and long-time clinician Alberto Malinao.
Aside from the ball handling skills, the participants learned of the basic drills and exercises to prepare them before the game.
“We are doing this for the kids to have a venue to exhaust their energies this summer,” said City Sports Coordinator Christopher “Bong” Go.
More than 4,000 boys and girls have benefitted from the free clinic.
