The league-leading Blacks seek for a fourth straight win on Sunday against a dangerous Green squad at the resumption of the Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Cup Inter-Media basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.
The Blacks, who masterfully escaped with a 115-114 double overtime win against the Reds last Sunday, will be hoping to stretch their winning run to four and keep its one game lead over the Reds and the Greenies which both tote a 2-2 win-loss card.
The hard-luck Reds hope to bounce back from that painful loss to the Blacks as they collide with the cellar-dwelling Whites (1-3) in the first game of the Sunday twinbill.
A muffed free throw by burly forward Jun Suter of DXGO with no time left handed the Blacks the victory over the Reds. GMA’s Jun Digamon waxed hot for the Blacks with five triples and a game-high 29 for Team Black but it was ABS-CBN’s Allan Abais’ two free throws that put the Blacks on top for good at 115-113, 8 ticks left in the second extension.
Suter drove for the basket and missed but he was fouled on the process as time expired. With no time left and two cracks to tie the game, Suter can only come halfway close to that.
Against the Greenies, the Blacks will have to come out in full force with Digamon, Orlanes and Abais along with Jun Bersamin on the firing end. The Greens will rely on the dangerous duo of Carl Eric “Idol Dagul” Alindao of MOR and Boom Boom Jerios of GMA along with Jon Develos of Mindanao Times.
The Reds meantime will have their hands full against the high-scoring Philip Tumaroy of the Whites. Leading the charge for the Reds will again be the Bruise Brothers combi of Rico Jones Biliran and Suter with slippery Terver “Inday Tanini” Quillano. (NJB, City Sports)

Blacks turn back Reds in 2OT

It all came down to the battle of free throws and the Blacks just had the touch and a little bit of luck. Reds forward DXAB anchorman Allan Abais canned two free throws with 8 seconds left in the second overtime but the Blacks’ Bruise Brothers of Rico Jones Biliran and Jun Suter weren’t as lucky from the same distance when it really mattered.
In the end, those free throws decided an otherwise tightly-fought contest for the Blacks who snatched a 115-114 double overtime win over the Reds on January 10 in the Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Cup Inter-Media basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.
The burly Biliran, who had a game-high 29 points, muffed a crucial free throw with 14 seconds left in the second overtime after baiting a foul and connecting on a drive to tie the score at 114-all. He had all worked it up from the back of his mind after missing what could have been a game-winner in the first OT, but his free throw rimmed out. Abais was fouled in the next play with 8 ticks left and calmly sank his freebies to put the Blacks on top 115-113.
In the final play, Love Radio’s Suter picked up his own miss but was fouled as time expired. With no time left, Suter went to the line for a pair of charities as both teams stood anxiously from the sidelines. Suter sank the first but missed the second that could have sent the game to a third OT.
The Blacks now lead the four-team tourney devoted to media practitioners in the city with a 3-1 win-loss slate. The Reds dropped to 2-2 in a tie with the Greens which beat the Whites earlier, 81-79. The Whites dropped to 1-3.

Abais fires 30 points for Black as Red downs Green in Mayor Rody-Inday Sara media cagefest

Allan Abais fired 30 points to lead the Black Team past the White Team, 68-62 even as the Red Team downed the Green team, 86-85 in the Mayor Rody-Inday Sara All-Media Basketball Tournament, January 3, at the Davao City Recreation Center.
Abais was all over the place, hitting three pointers and jump shots in the final half where he canned in 20 of his 30 points.
Elric Ayop topscored for the White with 15 points but his teammates were off as Philip Tumaroy, who drilled in 26 in the second game, could only manage to score 11 points.
The Black improved to two wins against one loss and the White dropped to its second loss against one victory.
In the second game, Jerry Rentucan and Rico Biliran were in their top form by leading the Red Team against the Green Team with 24 points and 19, respectively.
Biliran came out deadly with his outside shooting and Rentucan controlled the paint where he was unstoppable.
The Green Team relied on Eric Alindao for the scoring charge but his teammates could not deliver the needed points to catch up with the Red Team which tallied its second win in three games. Green Team sported a 1-2 win-loss slate.

Brgy.Watabe rules Inday Sara women’s cagefest
Brgy.Watabe recovered from a slow start to defeat the Rizal-Boulevard Team, 81-67 in the Inday Sara Women’s Basketball Tournament, recently, at the Davao City Police Office court.
Amy Gueta, the tournament’s most valuable player, fired 24 points to lead Brgy.Watabe to victory.
Mera Pabia of Rizal-Boulevard, who topscored with 33 points, tried to rally her teammates but she lost steam in the final quarter where Brgy.Watabe outscored them, 20-12.
Pabia scored from all sides of the court at the start of the first half but the bigger Jessie Sabaricos, Debbie Joey Obiena, Cheryl Bueno, who canned in 21 baskets, and Gueta controlled the boards when she started missing the shots.
Sabaricos, recruited by the University of Sto.Tomas team after helping University of Mindanao win the National PRISAA crown in 2004, helped more in the rebounding and drilled in 17 more points to secure the win.
Brgy.L.Garcia placed third after beating Brgy.5-A, 56-43.
Tournament director Alberto Malinao awarded the prizes to the winners.

Black, White teams score wins in RRD-Inday Sara All-Media cagefest
Black and White Teams scored contrasting victories at the start of the Mayor Rody-Inday Sara All-Media Basketball Tournament, Saturday, at the Davao City Recreation Center.
Allan Abais of ABS-CBN Davao topscored for Black with 32 points while Alfred Saguran of Radyo Rapido added 26 points even as Jun Digamon of GMA Davao hit 22 baskets to help in the scoring charge against Red Team, 100-88.
Sammy Baug of Radyo Rapido led the Reds with 22 points while Rico Biliran of Mindanews added 19 points.
The White Team, on the other hand, drubbed the Green Team, 73-53 with Benieboy Angchay of ABS-CBN canning in 21 points to spearhead his team to a debut win.
Games will resume on Saturday afternoon, 2 p.m., according to tournament director Alberto “Bert” Malinao.

The Watabe cagers defeated Brgy.5-A, 38-24 after beating Brgy.76-A on Saturday.
Brgy.L.Garcia, on the other hand, trounced Brgy.San Antonio, 47-32 even as the Rizal-Boulevard cagebelles downed Brgy.76-A, 58-24.
Games will resume on December 19, according to tournament director Alberto “Bert” Malinao.
Watabe plays San Antonio at 8 a.m., Brgy.76-A vs. Brgy.5-A at 9 a.m. and Rizal-Boulevard vs. Brgy.L.Garcia at 10 a.m.

Land Transportation Office defeated General Services Office, 87-81 to take third place in the ongoing Inday Sara Cup at the Davao City Recreation Center.
Allan Ardenio led LTO with 21 points to secure the victory for the boys of regional director Cocoy Zozobrado.
Edison Brigoli and Jonel Avendanio tried to keep GSO alive in the final quarter and even sliced LTO’s lead to just six points but time was no longer on their side.

Defending champion Regional Mobile Group and chief rival City Mayor's Office demolished their respective foes on Saturday for their second win in as many outings to stay on top in the Mayor Rody and Inday Sara 7th PNP-AFP basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.
RMG turned back BJMP 104-83 to keep track with the Mayor's Men who were again devastating in blasting the visiting Compostela Valley Police Provincial Office 113-91.
CMO relied on a balanced offensive anchored on the sweet-shooting guard Bong Go and the emerging “Triple B” troika of Roy Bangkas, Ariel Bonleon and big man Dioven Braga. Already a marked man in every outing for his torrid shooting, Go has developed a new arsenal—a running tear drop off a fake from his favorite spot beyond the arc, or pass off to an open teammate. This was evident in their first two games as Go has scored a little less than usual, 25 against ComVal, but his teammates were left open a lot often. The Triple B connection of Bangkas, Bonleon and Braga combined for 34.
Ike Estampa led ComVal with 17 markers in a losing effort.

League-leaders CMO and Kolin-Emcor part ways on Friday night to determine the top Group qualifier at the close of eliminations in the 1st Inday Sara-RVAI Invitational Cup basketball tournament at the Rivera Village Covered Court.
The match was originally scheduled Tuesday but heavy rains forced the postponement of the highly-anticipated match between two of the league’s remaining unbeaten squads.
The Air Condition Specialists are spotless with a 3-0 win-loss slate in Group A, the same record toted by the Mayor’s Men. Although the two teams are already assured of the Group’s berths to the crossover semis, the winner of the match will take the top spot and will meet the no. 2 team in Group B.
CMO will be relying on the return of sweet-shooting Bong Go, the mayor’s executive assistant, who missed CMO’s last outing against Wind and Wave. They will also bank on a solid back-up crew composed of Jason Tan, Dioven Braga, Boyet Brigoli and Bong Aleman.
The tournament is sponsored by Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte through the City Sports Development Office and the Rivera Village Association, Inc.
Meantime, RVAI Committee chairman Jet Calma announced that there will be an exhibition match between the RVAI Selection and the Sports For Peace squad made up mostly of sports media and officials.

The sweet-shooting executive assistant of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who wowed the crowd at the Barangay 5-A Bankerohan Gym with his three point shooting prowess, scattered 39 points to put CMO in the winning column.
Go had 15 points after the first twenty minutes of play and scored the last 24 from behind the arc, hitting from all angles, in the final half.
Roy Bangkas and Dioven Braga chipped in 11 points respectively for CMO which came out strong early taking 29 - 12 after the first canto and never looked back.
Rygian Delgra paced the Airmen with 25 markers.
In the second game, Regional Headquarters needed an extra five minutes to dispose Bureua of Jail Management and Penology, 114 - 112 in overtime.
Robinson Palomares topscored for RHQ with 36 points.
Acting Mayor Sara Duterte opened the tournament to the delight of the players and team officials from ten participating teams from the various units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police.
In her short speech, she urged the players to play with highest level of sportsmanship and "enjoy the games".
The tournament is sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

The tournament will follow a single round robin elimination format and the top four teams will advance to the semifinal with the top two teams enjoying a twice to beat advantage.
Sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the tournament will be under the supervision of the the country's governing body's referees.

IT’s Barangay San Antonio’s turn to host the 2009 Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Duterte Basketball Clinic on July 11-12.
After a huge turned out in Barangay Tacunan last weekend, the two-day cage clinic will be conducted in Barangay San Antonio, Agdao District upon the request of its chairman Roger Galido.
“There are over 100 young basketball enthusiasts have already signified to take part in the said clinic,” said Galido, known to many for his passion in the country’s most popular sport.
“And, interestingly, there are more who are willing and excited to participate, “added Galido, who is the playmaker of the Association of Barangay Captain (ABC) basketball team that regularly play against City Hall Executives led by Christopher “Bong” Go, Mayor Duterte’s executive assistant and Legislative Team of Councilors Diosdado Mahipus and Dante Apostol.
Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) player Cadel Mosqueda and veteran coach Alberto Malinao will lead the group of clinicians from the Sports Development Division of the City Mayors Office (SDD-CMO) in the two day clinic.
“The kids who will bring home basketballs courtesy of Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Sara at the end of the clinic will be taught the basic fundamentals of the sport that include proper shooting, dribbling and passing, " SDD-CMO said in a statement.
Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Sara wants the children in the locality to actively engage into sports at an early age, believing the value of sports to make difference in young lives and an effective tool to combat negative influences and behaviours, the statement added.
Galido said the sport has made wonder in their effort to address peace and order concern in the community.
“The staging of the clinic in our barangay would definitely boost our sports program that has been our effective tool to maintain peace and order and combat bad acts of our youth, “he added.
The clinic, a component of the Duterte Basketball League (DBL) that organized tournaments for Christians, Muslims and Lumads in the city, is conducted to give the youth an avenue to engage in sports at an early age.

The 2009 Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Duterte Basketball Clinic has attracted 100 young basketball enthusiasts over the weekend in Barangay Tacunan, Tugbok District.
The kids, who received free basketballs at the end of the clinic, were taught the basic fundamentals of the sport from a group of clinician from the Sports Development Division of the City Mayors Office (SDD-CMO) led by former PBA player Cadel Mosqueda and veteran clinician Alberto Malinao.
"The young kids were very happy to bring home their balls courtesy of Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Duterte," said SDD-CMO in a statement.
"And, Of course, the proper way of shooting, passing and dribbling that they have learned from our clinicians," the statement added.
Barangay officials and parents thanked Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte for staging the clinic in their barangay.
The clinic, a component of the Duterte Basketball League (DBL) that organized tournaments for Christians, Muslims and Lumads in the city, will be held next in Barangay San Antonio, Agdao District on July 11 - 12.

A total of 110 young basketball enthusiasts have joined the 2009 Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Duterte Basketball Clinic last weekend at Barangay Pañalum in Paquibato District.
Showing high level of interest to learn the proper way of playing the sport, the children aged from 4 to 16 packed the Barangay Panalum covered court for the two days of fun and learning.
The kids, mostly son’s and daughters of farmers and laborers, were taught the basic fundamentals of the sport from a group of clinician from the Sports Development Division of the City Mayors Office (SDD-CMO) led by former PBA player Cadel Mosqueda, erstwhile MBA standouts Dindo Pastor and Roi Josol and veteran clinician Alberto Malinao.
“They were happy and obviously had fun of learning the proper shooting, dribbling and passing,” said SDD-CMO’s Dina Lacorda of the kids who received free basketballs at the end the clinic.
Barangay officials and parents thanked Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte for staging the clinic in their barangay.
The participants were amazed at all they learned in a short period of time and some parents commented on how nice it was for their son's and daughters to learn to play the sport the right way.
