Montana hands Pacman 2nd loss,M. Lhuillier downs Bida-Laguna

Will the real Pacman please stand up?
Manny Pacquiao’s basketball franchise went down to another heartbreaking defeat and with two losses in as many games, you get to start thinking if the real Pacman should be suiting up for his team or can Freddie Roach can help its cause.
But this is basketball and this team may not have the speed and marksmanship of its owner in a close 84-80 overtime loss to the home squad Montana Pawnshop on Monday night in the Mayor Rody-Vice Mayor Inday Sara 73rd Araw ng Dabaw Invitational basketball tournament.

Late in the night, Cebu’s M. Lhuillier turned back Team Bida of Laguna 91-75 to get back on track after an opening day loss and for the second playdate, fans filled the newly-refurbished Almendras Gym to the rafters reminiscent of the good old days.
Montana’s sweet-shooting wingman Henry Fernandez fired 8 of the Jewels’ last 10 points in regulation but it was Don Tadena’s putback that sent the game into overtime. Pacman’s Louie Medalla showed a lot of spunk in the fourth period, firing 11 of his 18 points, including a booming triple that could have won it for Pacman.

The story in overtime was about experience and that was essayed well by Montana’s veterans.
Speedy quarterback Michael Manigo broke Pacman’s swarming defense, regaled the crowd with several passes whipped from the blind side to Fernandez and Tadena as the Jewels survived the Warriors from Gen. Santos City who showed a lot of heart despite falling short of ammunition.

The second win shoved Montana by the doorstep to the finals as it remained the only unbeaten team in this tournament organized under the supervision of the City Sports Development Division and the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP).
Laguna’s Team Bida, which stands for Batang Iwas Droga, led through the third canto but wilted under the heat of Lhuillier rifleman Stephen Padilla’s scorching triples. Padilla, a former PBA journeyman, fired 7 triples from way out of the amateur arc to lead the Cebuanos with 24 points. Crowd favorite Marlon Basco added 14 including a one-handed slam in the dying seconds while Mark Magsumbol, who celebrated his birthday a night before, and Ariel Mepana combined for 23.

The Drugbusters were paced by Robert Sanz with 15 while Leomar Losented added 13.

Both Lhuillier and Bida tote a 1-1 win-loss slate and will need a win to at least tie for a finals berth. Lhuillier has a +12 quotient after 2 games while Bida has -6. That means Bida has to beat Montana in the last day of eliminations and pray that Lhuillier lose to Pacman to earn a ticket to the finals. A win by Lhuillier coupled by a Bida loss will arrange a Montana-Lhuillier finals.
A 3-way tie is possible if Montana loses to Bida and Lhuillier wins over Pacman. In that case, the quotient system will be the decider. Montana thus far holds a +8 quotient.

With the three franchises mathematically still in contention, Pacman will be relegated to the role of playing spoiler. It may not help its cause but it will surely rock the standings. A call from the real Pacman straight from Vegas may yet prick the pride of the franchise to go for one last crack at victory.
Whatever, expect a fight from the Pacman Warriors. Afterall, they do not cower like James Clottey. (pr)

Sunstar Davao: Mayor Rody-Inday Sara Brgy.Officials Basketball Tournament opens on Saturday

THE Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Barangay Officials Inter-Political District Basketball Tournament will open at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Almendras Gym.

Tournament coordinator Rico Jhone Biliran of the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (CMO) bared this during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.

Biliran said teams will come from Poblacion A and B, Paquibato, Buhangin, Talomo, Baguio, Bunawan, Agdao, Marilog, Tugbok, Toril, and Calinan districts.

"The teams will be grouped into two brackets where the top two teams of each group after the eliminations will advance to the cross-over semi-finals. The top teams, however, will have the twice-to-beat advantage," Biliran said.

Prizes will have yet to be announced during the opening rites that will be graced by either Mayor Rodrigo or Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte. (MLSA)

That's what the local hooplandia can expect from the Mayor Rody-Inday Sara 7th AFP-PNP basketball tournament which gets going today at the Almendras Gym.



The seventh edition of this tournament which started as a mini-tournament among branches of the PNP and the AFP based in Davao City has become one of the premier basketball tournaments and has even attracted two out-of-town teams from Compostela Valley province.



Defending champion City Mayor's Office returns to defend their crown against top rival Regional Mobile Group and a host of title contenders in Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Navy, 10th Infantry Division, PNP SAF, Task Force Davao, PNP RHQ, DCPO, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Coast Guard, BJMP, PNP NSU, 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion, Comval PPO and Regional Training School.



Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will formally open the tournament today at 2:00 p.m. Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte will also be on hand for the opening program which features the traditional team parade with their muses.



CMO will be parading the nucleus of its champion squad with top gun Bong Go at the forefront of its offensive which also has a strong support crew in Dioven Braga, Ariel Bonleon, Jason Tan, and Roy Bangkas. Ex pros Cadel Mosqueda and Dindo Pastor provide the experience.



The main challenge will come from RMG who will be out to snatch the title away from the Mayor's Men. Big surprises though will be expected from the Comval teams who will be joining the tournament for the first time. (NJB-City Sports)





CMO downs Pagcor 87-75 for win no. 5



League-leading City Mayor's Office got a scare on Halloween but still fashioned out a methodical 87-75 win over a stubborn Pagcor crew to notch its fifth win in as many games in the year-ending Inday Sara Cup basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.



The Halloween win came after Pagcor, which played for the first time in the tourney, stood its ground against the marauding Mayor's Men before giving up its tough stand in the wake of a final juggernaut by CMO.



Streak-shooting Bong Go had a game-high 33 markers while slotman Marvin Mondigo and quarterback Ryan Alquizar chipped in a combined 23. Eric Tuadles led Pagcor with 21 while Ric Baraquias added 17.



In other games, Sangguniang Panlungsod won for the first time after two losses with a 115-107 overtime win over a veteran-laden DCWD while Muslim All-Stars turned back IBP 91-83.



Mike Bantilan exploded for SP with 46 points and Jilian de Guzman added 28 in a two-pronged attack by the Legislators while the Watermen relied on the 26 points of Pong Dizon who has dropped to 0-3.

The 2009 Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Duterte Basketball Clinic gets going today in Barangay Centro, Agdao District.

At least 100 kids are expected to join the two-day clinic which was held last in Barangay San Antonio two weeks ago.

Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) player Cadel Mosqueda and veteran coach Alberto Malinao will lead the group of clinicians from the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) to conduct the clinic.

“The kids who will bring home basketballs courtesy of Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Sara at the end of the clinic will be taught the basic fundamentals of the sport that include proper shooting, dribbling and passing, " SDD-CMO said in a statement.

Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Sara wants the children in the locality to actively engage into sports at an early age, believing the value of sports to make difference in young lives and an effective tool to combat negative influences and behaviours, the statement added.

The clinic, a component of the Duterte Basketball League (DBL) that organized tournaments for Christians, Muslims and Lumads in the city, is conducted to give the youth an avenue to engage in sports at an early age.

In Brgy. San Antonio, A total of 150 young basketball enthusiasts have joined the clinic.

The clinics have benefitted thousands of boys and girls from 184 barangays in Davao City since 2003.
