CONTROVERSIES aside, the 35th season of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is off to a fine start a week into the KFC-Philippine Cup campaign.
Figures released by the league Monday revealed a 55.78 percent increase in sales during the Oct. 11 opener, while another 46.74 percent increase was also registered in terms of sales for the entire playing week of the season-opening conference.
A marked improvement was also recorded in terms of gate attendance during the same period.
On opening day schedule featuring Burger King and Purefoods recorded sales of P988,730 up from last year’s opener of P634,687.
Attendance was pegged at 7,594 or about 108.45 percent increase from the 3,643 that showed up when the 2008-09 Philippine Cup took the wraps off.
The TJ Giants won the lone opening game, 93-80, marking the first and last time the 6-foot-10 Japeth Aguilar, drafted as the top rookie pick of the year, donned a Whoppers uniform.
After a week of action in the All-Filipino tournament, the league posted sales of P2,850,665, surpassing the P1,942,694 Asia’s first play for pay league earned during the same stretch last season.
Likewise, attendance improved to 28,133 from 15,086 – a tremendous increase of 86.52 percent. A banner crowd at the Araneta Coliseum showed up for the rematch of last year’s Fiesta Cup protagonists San Miguel and Barangay Ginebra and the Sunday encounter between the Kings and the Purefoods Giants.
So far, average attendance per game is at 7,035, an 86.52 percent turnaround from the 3.772 recorded last year.
“We’re very thankful and grateful to all the basketball fans who continue to support your PBA come hell or high water,” said PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios.
“In return we promise to provide with exiting and thrilling games throughout that year.”

ARBOLEDA SUSPENDED FOR REST OF THE 2009-10 PBA SEASON
The Philippine Basketball Association yesterday handed down its severest penalty to date, suspending veteran Burger King guard Wynne Arboleda without pay for the rest of the 2009-10 Season.
Arboleda, who was earlier called for his second flagrant foul in the game, went after a heckler at courtside during the Whoppers’ game against Smart-Gilas at the Araneta Coliseum last Friday, landing a kick and some punches before being restrained by cooler heads.
The suspension means P2.73 million in lost income for Arboleda, not counting won game, advancement and player award bonuses. For committing two flagrant fouls penalty 1 in the game, the nine-year PBA veteran also drew a P20,000 fine and a one-game suspension which will be served on Wednesday in their game against the San Miguel Beermen.
In his decision letter sent to Arboleda, PBA commissioner Renauld Barrios said, “As we pointed out to you, even granting that said fan was foul-mouthed and verbally abusive as confirmed by reports to us, there is a “line” that a PBA player cannot and should not cross: to physically harm a fan.
Coming just a few months after two separate incidents involving players and fans, commissioner Barrios said, “your serious breach of this “line” at this time and in the manner described herein endangers the PBA as being perceived by the public as unwholesome and not deserving of fan support.”
The PBA Commissioner ended his letter by saying a repeat of the same or similar act will result in a lifetime ban from the league.
Barrios, who met with Arboleda yesterday morning at the PBA Commissioner’s Office in Libis, added that the PBA must send a strong signal that such an unwanted act has no place in the league and will never be taken lightly, stressing that the fans’ interest is always the league’s primordial concern as established by PBA forefathers over the years.
While serving his suspension, Arboleda cannot be present at the playing venues during Burger King’s games.
As a contracted PBA player even while suspended, Arboleda likewise may not play in any other league.

MANDAUE CITY – Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue pulled off the 76-71 victory over Forward Taguig but left with an empty bag in a dramatic final day of the preliminary round of the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Mandaue City Leg Friday at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center.
Needing to win by at least 10 points in order to force a three-way tie with Taguig and the Quezon Red Oilers at 2-1, Mandaue was leading comfortably by as much as 13 markers in the fourth period. However, Taguig slowly closed the gap as Mandaue put up a series of hurried plays allowing their opponents to score off their miscues.
Quezon and Taguig thus earned seats in the leg finals with superior FIBA quotients of 1.053 and 1.000 respectively. Mandaue finished at 0.947 and will meet the winless Zamboanga Uno Latinos for Third Place.

The hosts will go all out in the main game versus the Red Oilers starting at 6:00 PM. The 4:00 PM opener will pit Taguig against the unpredictable Latinos.
Mandaue is coming off a long break after taking Third Place in the Misamis Oriental Leg that ended last September 12 and is primed to make a move on the league leaderboard with three weeks left in the tour elims.
The team of businessman Joe Soberano has eight Liga Pilipinas Tour Points with two legs to play to share Seventh and Eighth Place with the MP Warriors of GenSan who already completed their four-leg schedule two weeks ago. The Red Oilers of Gov. Raffy Nantes and Coach Oliver Bunyi have 23 points, good for a tie at Fourth and Fifth Place with the idle Trace-Laguna Stallions.
To bolster their chances of catching up with the league leaders, Mandaue has added guard Boyet Bautista and forward JR Aquino to the roster that already boasts of shooters Jercules Tangkay, Jerome Cenita and Jett Latonio, guards John Paul Alcaraz, Alex Cainglet and Ronald Bucao, and frontliners Enrico Llanto, Rino Berame, Danny Aying, Mannie Gabas, Francis Mercado and Joel Solis.

The University of Mindanao Lady Cardinals was too much for San Pedro College, 81-55 at the start of the women’s division of the Gaisano
South Cup Basketball Tournament, October 7, at the Gaisano South Sky gym.
Karen Cataluna scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds, issued two assists and grabbed four steals to emerge best player.
In the men’s division, the Jose Maria College Kings subdued the DMMA College of Southern Philippines, 94-85 for their second win in three
games.
The Kings relied on Jomabon Bulac who drilled in 28 points, hauled eight rebounds, dished off one assist and tallied two steals to hand
DMMA its third straight loss.

Holy Trinity College of Gen.Santos City earned the ticket to the Zonal Finals in Cebu after ruling the Mindanao Finals of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champion’s League/Duterte Basketball League, October 8, at the Gaisano South Sky gym.
With eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Meylan Landicho stole the ball from Southern City College of Zamboanga’s John Wayne Pagobo then got fouled to seal the victory for Holy Trinity against the hard-fighting Zamboanguenos, 96-92.
Paulino Rebollos Jr., who led Southern City College with 39 points, hit a three-point shot to slice Holy Trinity’s lead, 92-94, eight seconds left but the Zamboanguenos lost the chance to equalize the game.
“Tsamba lang talaga, hindi nga maganda ang laro ng mga bata, na pagod kami against Ateneo de Davao last Wednesday,” said coach Apolinar Torrijos.
The victory made team manager Rey T. Albano smile as they will represent Mindanao to the Zonals on November 4 to 8 in Cebu.
Jomar Balmaceda topscored for Holy Trinity with 23 baskets.
Kevin Jolan Pragados, Rafael Lape, Wendy Versoza, John Rey Masana, Paul James de Mesa, Eric Ram Lamanilao, Ray Anthonette de Leon, Reymar Roxas, Christopher Masaglang, Eddie Gosanes Jr., Bryan Charielle Esguerra, Elcar Jick Gabutan and Don Arturo Desaville will also take a break and will be back for practice in a week for the Zonals.
The tournament was organized by the PCCL under tournament chairman Joe Lipa and sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Regino “Boy” Cua with the support of Smart, PLDT, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte.

Champion’s League/DBL final two games this afternoon at GS Sky gym
The final two games of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champion’s League/Duterte Basketball League Mindanao Finals are scheduled this afternoon at the Gaisano South Sky gym.
Zamboanga City’s Southern City College plays Gen.Santos City’s Holy Trinity College in the first game at 2 p.m. while Davao City’s Ateneo de Davao University takes on Cagayan de Oro City’s Cagayan de Oro College.
Cagayan de Oro earned its second win after beating Zamboanga, 77-60 while Gen.Santos City bounced back with a 96-86 victory over Davao City on Wednesday afternoon.
The team with the most number of wins will emerge champion and will earn a ticket to the Zonals in Cebu City.
