Yellow guns for 2nd win in IBP-Mayor RRD Cup

IBP Yellow guns for its second victory when it battles IBP Orange in the resumption of the 2008 Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Cup Basketball League on Saturday, April 19, at the IBP Hall of Justice covered court.

Game time is at 1:20 p.m.

IBP Yellow trounced IBP Orange, 131-93 on opening day last week that also saw Panabo Hall of Justice drub Comelec, 113-97; IBP White shade IBP Lavender, 104-83 and ABS-CBN Davao edge IBP Coca-Cola, 95-94.

Other games will feature Panabo Hall of Justice against the DCPO Officers Group at 2:45 p.m., Comelec Region XI vs. City Government of Davao at 4 p.m. and IBP Lavender vs. IBP Coca-Cola in the main game at 5:25 p.m.

PBA supports BAP-SBP

IN a display of commitment and willingness to serve the Philippine colors, the Board of Governors of the Philippine Basketball Association unanimously agreed to immediately form a committee that will sit down with officials of the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to discuss a new Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

Tony Chua, the incumbent chairman of the pro league, said a new agreement between the two associations should be in place as soon as possible to enable future national teams to prepare well and avoid any hitch that may spoil the country's future campaigns.

Chua said the issue of a new accord has been discussed in the last PBA Board meeting.

"I think it's important for both of us (PBA and BAP-SBP) to discuss about crafting a new MOA if only to maintain a smooth working relationship and avoid problem in as far as forming the national team is concerned," Chua said.

He cited the case of PBA Philippine Cup Sta. Lucia Realty, which missed an opportunity to represent the country in the Champions Cup due to a conflict in schedule.

The Champions Cup is set May 8-16 in Kuwait and runs conflict with the PBA Fiesta Cup, which commenced last March 30.

"It would have been an honor for the league to have one of its member represent the country in the Champions Cup but the schedule of PBA Fiesta Conference got in the way," Chua said.

He said would discuss the selection of the members of the committee as soon as PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios arrives from the United States.

At the same time Chua maintained that the PBA Board of Governors fully support all the plans and programs of the BAP-SBP headed by its president Manny V Pangilinan.

"The Board of Governors of the PBA will continue to support the BAP-SBP in all it's undertaking," Chua said.

Last year, PBA players represented the Philippines in the Fiba Asia-Olympic Qualifying tournament in Tokushima, Japan.

General Rules and Regulations

1. Each team shall have a maximum of 4 team members and a minimum of 3 team members.

2. No coaches shall be allowed for Midgets & Juniors Divisions. The Team Captain of each Team shall serve as “Coach.” ONLY THE MINI-DIVISION SHALL BE ALLOWED TO HAVE A COACH.

3. A “toss coin” determines which Team has the initial possession.

4. Baskets scored inside the arc is credited for 1 point. Baskets scored beyond the arc will be credited for 2 points.

5. Free-throws: Shall be equivalent to one (1) point. If a player is fouled in the act of shooting outside the arc, the player will be awarded two (2) free throws.

6. If the score is tied, a Free-throw Shootout requiring all the players will ensue. This process continues until the tie has been broken. Sequence shall be according to Player Number (1-2-3-4).

Players who are out of the game due to “Foul Out” or “Injury” cannot participate in Shoot-Outs.

7. Possession changes after made Baskets. No Interception during Inbound Passes.

8. When a defensive team makes a stop or gets a rebound they will have to clear the basketball first beyond the arc. (“Labas yung Bola”).

9. Game Formats:

a. Classification & Play-Off Rounds

i. Game duration will be 10 minutes “Running Time.”

ii. Each Team is allowed 1 Timeout during the Game.

iii. No timeouts can be called during the last the 2-minutes of a Game.

b. Play-Offs to Finals Games

i. Game duration shall be 12 minutes and “stop time” shall be implemented during the last 2 minutes of the Games.

ii. Each Team is allowed 1 Timeout during the Game.

iii. No timeouts can be called during the last the 2-minutes of a Game.

10. Each player is allowed 4 personal fouls, otherwise he/she “fouls out.” If the team has committed 5 team fouls, the team is in penalty and the fouled player will shoot 1 free throw.

11. Substitution is allowed during the course of a Game. In cases of players fouling out, if there is still a substitute, the substitute may play. If there is no more substitute, the team will just have to continue with remaining players. If only One player remains, the Game is forfeited. For Game Forfeiture Score is fixed at 11-0 irregardless of actual game score.

12. Participants playing in the next game are required to be at their respective court assignments before their scheduled game. There will be no grace period.

13. In cases of injury, the injured player may be replaced, but cannot return to the game anymore.

14. The Tournament Director and Organizers reserve the right to stop the proceedings and / or alter the rules which they believe is for the best interest (safety, sportsmanship and fair play) of the participants.

15. No Protests of any kind will be entertained. All decisions by the Game Officials and And1 Futures Tournament Committee shall be final and un-appealable.

Saturday's opening game of the PBA-Smart Fiesta Cup is a surefire battle, pitting two teams with an old score to settle.

Coca-Cola and Talk n Text may have finished outside the Top Five in the recent Philippine Cup but they surely make an interesting pair to kick off the import-laced tourney set at 4:30 p.m. at the Panabo Multi-purpose, Tourism and Cultural Center in Davao del Norte.

The Pals, for one, are aching for vengeance against the Tigers who dealt them two heart-rending losses that eliminated TnT from the playoffs of the Philippine Cup.

Curiously, Talk n Text went on a nosedive after trading Asi Taulava to Coca-Cola in exchange for Ali Peek. The Fil-Tongan behemoth played a key role in the Tigers' two crucial wins against the Pals.

The poor showing of the Pals in the Fiesta Cup prompted the team management not to extend coach Derrick Pumaren's contract, paving the way for the entry of coach Chot Reyes.

Reyes said they have a job cut out for them against the Tigers.

"Coca-Cola has done a good job re-building. With two imports, all they need is three quality players and they're tough to beat," observed Reyes, who won two championships with Coca-Cola in 2002 and 2003.

"On paper, they should be in the Top Three," he added, impressed with Coca-Cola's lineup with the addition of Nic Belasco, who was during the in-between-conference break.

Aside from Taulava and Belasco, the Tigers will also be beef up by the 5-9 Calvin Cage and 6-foot- Jason Dixon.

For finishing ninth and 10^th respectively in the eliminations of last conference, Coca-Cola and Welcoat are allowed to field in two imports in the tourney – one with a ceiling of 6-foot-1 and another with unlimited height.

Talk n Text will be reinforced by Aaron McGee.

"Definitely, we've got stronger. But it remains to be seen what we can do. It's something we have to work for, something we have to sweat for," said Coca-Cola coach Binky Favis.

"Definitely, the talent we need is there. The challenge is how to use it. The great opportunity is there and I'm excited on what will unfold," Favis added.


The Pals had minor change in their lineup, acquiring free agent 6-foot-7 center Gilbert Lao.

Gaston, Banal know what this game is all about

COACHES Fritz Gaston and Joel Banal are among the first to throw in their support in Easter Sunday's 1st PBA Ateneo vs. La Salle Showdown at the Araneta Coliseum.

The two afterall, were among the first beneficiaries of the same account that will be the recipient of the Blue Eagles-Green Archers exhibition match – the PBA Players' Educational Trust Fund.

Both Gaston and Banal availed of their respective privileges to the program in pursuit of acquiring higher education after college and beyond theirprofessional basketball careers. Through the league's Trust Fund, the two ex-PBA players were able to attain their masteral degrees at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). Gaston acquired a masters degree in Business Management (1986-88) while Banal had his masters in Entrepreneurship (2001-02).

"The PBA Educational Trust Fund came to me at the right time," said Banal, 50, and current assistant coach to Tim Cone at Alaska. "This was after my MBAdays when I had no coaching job and I didn't have any plans of being an employee."

That time, Banal's family had just established the 2nd MOM Pre-School and the Domus Chola International School. "But I wanted to improve it owing to thegrowing number of competitions and the answer was to take up this course (entrepreneurship) from the top school which really helped to make it a standout from the rest."

Banal played for six seasons in the PBA from 1981 to 1986 and suited up for only one team, Great Taste.

Gaston also had a tour of duty with Great Taste, his last team in the league, in a career that spanned from 1979 to 1986 and included stops with U-Tex, SanMiguel, Crispa and Manila Beer.

"I was already in my last year of playing and I felt that I wanted more than just playing basketball. I wanted to go back to school again, but I was alreadyaiming for tip education and that time, I felt only AIM could give me that quality education where I can land a senior-level hiring position after I graduate,"recalled the 51-year-old Gaston, fresh from steering the RP women's team to a bronze medal finish in the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.

"But the desire to pursue it became even greater when I learned that I could avail of this program thru the PBA Educational Trust Fund. That time, it answered for my tuition fee, dorms, books and other school needs. So what more can I ask for," he said.

His masteral degree in Business Management allowed Gaston to work abroad for almost six years, Indonesia to be specific.

"I hope both Fritz Gaston and Joel Banal would be an inspiration to all PBA players and also avail of their privileges allowed under the league's Players'Educational Trust Fund," said commissioner Sonny Barrios. "That's why we're coming through with such benefit projects which we believe will be of great assistance to them (players) and their children in the future. Presented by Yakult Health Drink, the charity match is set at 4 p.m. and will be aired live over Studio 23.

Incidentally, Gaston and Banal were the last two coaches to steer the Blue Eagles to the UAAP championship.

Gaston, also a vital cog of Ateneo's champion teams in the mid-70s, gave the school a men's varsity title in 1988 while Banal did it 14-years later in 2002. Both were achieved at the expense of De La Salle.

Pawnbrokers defeats Latinos, MLKP stops Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware

The Montana Pawnbrokers defeated the Zamboanga Latinos, 89-62 in the opening of the round-robin format of 2008 Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte-Araw ng Dabaw Basketball Tournament, Thursday night, at the Davao City Recreation Center.

M.Lhuillier Kwarta Padala of Cebu City stopped the Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware, 71-69, in the other game.
