Red marches to finals
Color it Red.
Team Red pressed the red button early wary of another possible upset, making sure this one would not go away like the last time as it coasted to a 99-86 win over the reversal-conscious Team White and marched to the finals of the Mayor Rody-Inday Sara All-Media basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.
The Reds’ Triple Threat troika of Rico Biliran, Morly Morata and Trevor “Inday Tanini” Quillano were almost merciless as they made up for a lackluster performance in the 93-98 loss to the same team last week. The burly Biliran came through with a 34-point explosion punctuated with six triples while Morata and Quillano each had 23.
There was no déjà vu for the Whites who had no answer to the Reds’ red-hot offensive. Percy Penoliar sizzled with 32 markers but it was not enough to reverse the fortunes of the Whites who were looking for another upset win that could shove them into the finals of this tournament sponsored by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte.
The Reds took a 54-36 lead at the lemontime break and kept that cushion until the Whites came tantalizingly close early in the fourth when they cut the deficit to 7. But that was the nearest the Whites could get as the Reds painted the area beyond the arc with booming triple conversions.
Reds’ playing coach Dennis Lazo attributed the win to their heads up play and better field goal shooting. “Naninuod na jud mi kay dili namo gusto mahitabo na kaduha mi straight mapildi,” the Bombo Radyo anchor said.
The Reds will face Team Black in the finals on Sunday set at 2:30 pm while the Whites will play Team Green for third place at 1:00 pm.
The champion will receive a cash kitty of P25,000 while the losing finalist will take home P15,000. The third placer gets P10,000 and the fourth placer will get P5,000.
Meantime, Christopher ‘Bong” Go, executive assistant of the Mayor, expressed his appreciation to the participating media practitioners in the three-month long tournament. “We are grateful to the media for taking part. Not only did they show that they are also good players, they also exhibited tremendous sportsmanship and camaraderie.”
The All-Media cagefest is just one among the many sectoral sports competitions organized by the city government through the CMO-City Sports Development Division under the stewardship of Go.(NJB-City Sports)

Blacks turn back Reds in 2OT

It all came down to the battle of free throws and the Blacks just had the touch and a little bit of luck. Reds forward DXAB anchorman Allan Abais canned two free throws with 8 seconds left in the second overtime but the Blacks’ Bruise Brothers of Rico Jones Biliran and Jun Suter weren’t as lucky from the same distance when it really mattered.
In the end, those free throws decided an otherwise tightly-fought contest for the Blacks who snatched a 115-114 double overtime win over the Reds on January 10 in the Mayor Rody and Inday Sara Cup Inter-Media basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.
The burly Biliran, who had a game-high 29 points, muffed a crucial free throw with 14 seconds left in the second overtime after baiting a foul and connecting on a drive to tie the score at 114-all. He had all worked it up from the back of his mind after missing what could have been a game-winner in the first OT, but his free throw rimmed out. Abais was fouled in the next play with 8 ticks left and calmly sank his freebies to put the Blacks on top 115-113.
In the final play, Love Radio’s Suter picked up his own miss but was fouled as time expired. With no time left, Suter went to the line for a pair of charities as both teams stood anxiously from the sidelines. Suter sank the first but missed the second that could have sent the game to a third OT.
The Blacks now lead the four-team tourney devoted to media practitioners in the city with a 3-1 win-loss slate. The Reds dropped to 2-2 in a tie with the Greens which beat the Whites earlier, 81-79. The Whites dropped to 1-3.
Boom Boom Jerios of GMA fired 27 points and Carl Eric “Idol Dagul” Alindao of MOR added 24 to lead the Greenies. Percy Penoliar of ABS-CBN sizzled with 41 points for the Whites in a losing effort. (NJB, City Sports)

Abais fires 30 points for Black as Red downs Green in Mayor Rody-Inday Sara media cagefest

Allan Abais fired 30 points to lead the Black Team past the White Team, 68-62 even as the Red Team downed the Green team, 86-85 in the Mayor Rody-Inday Sara All-Media Basketball Tournament, January 3, at the Davao City Recreation Center.
Abais was all over the place, hitting three pointers and jump shots in the final half where he canned in 20 of his 30 points.
Elric Ayop topscored for the White with 15 points but his teammates were off as Philip Tumaroy, who drilled in 26 in the second game, could only manage to score 11 points.
The Black improved to two wins against one loss and the White dropped to its second loss against one victory.
In the second game, Jerry Rentucan and Rico Biliran were in their top form by leading the Red Team against the Green Team with 24 points and 19, respectively.
Biliran came out deadly with his outside shooting and Rentucan controlled the paint where he was unstoppable.
The Green Team relied on Eric Alindao for the scoring charge but his teammates could not deliver the needed points to catch up with the Red Team which tallied its second win in three games. Green Team sported a 1-2 win-loss slate.

Futures 3on3 list up at Almendras gym
Registration is now going on at the Almendras gym, from 1 to 5 p.m. for the Primovit Futures 3 on 3 Baller Battle on JUne 28 to 29 at the Gaisano South Sky gym.
Teams interested to join the two-day event can get their forms at the Almendras gym and just look for Paras. Requirements are copy of NSO birth certificates, waiver, parent's consent, two empty boxes of Primovit multivitamin capsules and P600 per team.
The boy's mini, midgets, juniors and girl's juniors categories are lined-up for this year's event.
Prizes are P7,500 for the champions and P5,000 for the second placers plus gift items from AND1, trophies and medals.
