Borgy Hermida dished out a notable performance in his debut with
Maynilad Tuesday as the Water Dragons crushed the Junior Powerade
Tigers, 119-67, in the classification round of the PBA D-League
Foundation Cup at the Oreta gym in Malabon.
It took just 10 minutes for the Water Dragons to put away their
terribly mismatched opponent.
They roared to a 28-point advantage after one quarter by shooting 57
percent (13 of 23) while their pressure defense held the Tigers to 3
of 15 shooting and eight turnovers that earned them 15 points. The
Water Dragons also earned a 15-0 advantage on fastbreak points.
Maynilad’s total output and margin of victory both went into the
record books of the fledgling league.
Meanwhile, Freego Jeans snapped a three-game losing slump with 65-53
victory over RnW Pacific Pipes in a Group A play.
Lester Alvarez scored 19 points while Julius Colina and Eric Camson
turned in double-double performance for the Falcons, who broke a close
game open by outscoring RnW Pacific Pipes, 20-11, in the third
quarter.
Colina finished with 15 points, Camson added and both cornered 15 and
13rebounds respectively as the Freego Jeans outrebounded Pacific
Pipes, 50-48.
Jim Viray and Vic Manuel scored 11 point apiece for Pacific Pipes
which pickjed up its third consecutive loss and tied Freego Jeans on
1-3 records.
RnW Pacific Pipes lost starting guard Rex Leynes four minutes into the
third quarter after he was whistled for a flagrant foul two and was
ejected from the game for elbowing Kirk del Rosario during a rebound
play.
“Maganda lang ang pasok ni Borgy,” offered Maynilad coach Frankie Lim,
referring to his new playmaker.
Hermida became a free agent after his PBA team Barako Bull Energy
Drink rescinded the remainder of his contract that was to expire in
June. He scored 10 points and dished 10 assists in his debut while
anchoring Maynilad’s offense smoothly.
Jake Pascual scattered 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to show the
way for the Water Dragons, who bounced back from a 67-77 loss against
the FCA Cultivators last week to improved to 3-2 (win-loss) record in
Group B. Jose Lim contributed 18 points, Garbo Lanete added 15 and
David Marcelo contributed 14.
It was a jolting blow for the Tigers, who hoped build on their
stunning 77-73 win against Cebuana Lhuillier last April 7 but could
get their game going and picked up their third loss in four games.
James Martinez scored 14 points and Briand Ilad had 13 for the Tigers,
who never established a rhythm the entire game. They shot poorly (35
percent), they got beaten off the boards, 40-57, and committed a total
28 turnovers, 17 more than Maynilad’s.
The Water Dragon, who treated the game like a scrimmage, took a 64-25
lead at halftime and posted the games biggest margin at 55 (110-55) on
a basket by Jake Pascual with four minutes remaining.

Junior Powerade hopes to build on its stunning victory against Cebuana
Lhuillier as it looks forward to winning two in a row in Group B when
it battles Maynilad Tuesday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.
The Tigers opened their campaign in the fledgling league with
successive blowout defeats but their collective confidence,
apparently, was buoyed by their 77-73 win against the Gems on April 7,
according to Junior Powerade coach Ricky Dandan.
“However, the challenge on our part is to translate that new found
confidence to a higher level of play so we can compete with another
powerhouse team that is Maynilad,” Dandan said.
The Tigers and the Water Dragons mixed it up at 2 p.m. at the Oreta
gym in Malabon. In Group A play, RnW Pacific Pipes (1-2) battles
winless Freego Jeans (0-3) at 4 p.m.
Maynilad, coming off a 67-77 loss against FCA last week, will be
without the injured Sudan Daniels but the inclusion of Borgie Hermida
should shore up its backcourt.
The Water Dragons acquired Hermida after his PBA team Barako Bull
Energy Drink rescinded the remainder of his contract that was to
expire in July.
“We are playing minus Sudan, who is injured. But Hermida will be a
good addition. Powerade is a tall team so we have to do a better job
in winning the boards,” said Maynilad coach Frankie Lim, returning to
the sideline after serving a one game suspension last week.
Lim, however, believes execution will matters most. “So we have to
take advantage of our quickness which I think is the key,” he said.PR

Player of the Week: Mark Caguioa
ANY coach would like a Mark Caguioa on his team. For sure, Barangay GInebra’s
Jong Uichico does.
“Mark Caguioa is a competitor. He’s a fighter, ayaw magpatalo,” said Uichico of
the prolific guard-forward chosen as the Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the
Week for the period April 11 to 18 after helping boost the Kings into the
semifinals and tantalizingly close to a Commissioner’s Cup Finals stint.
“It’s really nice to have a player like (him) in your team. it’s positive.”He’s
just so competitive that he wants to win… and sometimes you’d rather have that
than somebody who won’t fight at all.”
Such a competitive spirit was translated into more concrete form by the 2001
Rookie of the Year to the tune of 21.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3
steals in the three victories Ginebra notched in the week that was.
He highlighted his sterling performances with a 30-point, 11-rebound game in a
92-82 win against Rain or Shine last Wednesday, enabling Ginebra to buck an
unusually cold night from import Nate Brumfield.
Brumfield shot just 4-for-12 from the field and wound with just 12 points. That
didn’t matter as, no little thanks to Caguioa’s best performance since the 2010
Fiesta Conference, the Kings wrapped up their best-of-three quarterfinals duel
with the Elasto Painters, 2-1.
In the first two games of the race-to-three semis match-up with No. 2 seed
Smart-Gilas, Brumfield picked up his game and led Ginebra to 97-96 and 110-103
triumphs. But Caguioa remained as the top local King by averaging 17.0 points in
those outings.
Those wins pushed Ginebra within another of booking a seat in the championship
series and Caguioa is one player sure to crank up his game even more if that
objective is realized.
That should spell even more bad news for the opposition.
Caguioa beat out Talk N Text’s Ranidel de Ocampo (18.5 points, 7.5 rebounds in
two semis games) for his second such citation for the conference after being
similarly honored for the period March 24-30.PR

All-star cast named
THREE Alaska players and three more from San Miguel, including rookie
big man Rabeh Al-Hussaini, were named to the final rosters of both
North and South All-Star teams which will pit skills in the 2011 PBA
All-Star Game in Boracay a month from now.
The three Aces voted as reserves by the PBA head coaches are big men
Joe Devance and Sonny Thoss and playmaker L.A. Tenorio , while
Al-Hussaini is joined by fellow Beermen Arwind Santos and Alex
Cabagnot.
Al-Hussaini, the year’s No. 2 overall pick and the only freshman to
make it to the All-Star line up, will suit up for the North squad of
San Miguel mentor Ato Agustin along with Santos, Cabagnot and Tenorio.
Devance and Thoss, on the other hand, represent the ‘Twin Tower’ off
the bench for the South All-Stars under Talk `N Text mentor Chot
Reyes.
Completing the reserves for the North are Talk `N Text’s frontcourt
tandem of Ranidel de Ocampo and Harvey Carey, along with Meralco
hotshot MacMac Cardona.
Perennial All-Star Jimmy Alapag of Talk `N Text, meanwhile, is again
suiting up for the South together with Derby Ace’s Peter June Simon,

Mark, Willie lead North against James and South
THE explosive Ginebra backcourt tandem of Mark Caguioa and Willie Miller leads the North team against James Yap and the South squad when the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) unveils the 2011 edition of the annual All-Star game next month in the scenic island of Boracay.
Caguioa and Miller accumulated the most number of fan votes among guards from Luzon with 17,037 and 9,603, respectively, in earning the starting guard spots
for the North.
But it was James Yap, as expected, who emerged the runaway fan favorite, receiving the most number of votes among this year’s All-Stars with 31,437.
The Derby Ace top gunner gets to share stellar billing with high-flyer Cyrus Baguio of Alaska, who nosed out Talk `N Text’s Jimmy Alapag for the other backcourt spot by earning 18,342 votes. Alapag got 16,785.
Voting for the May 18-23 mid-season spectacle dubbed ‘Hala Bola Boracay 2011 All Star Weekend’ ended last April 10.

Andrian Celeda scored 27 points and the Blackwater Elite rolled to
their third consecutive win with a vengeful 86-75 romp over Pharex
Thursday in the classification round of the PBA D-League Foundation
Cup at the Lyceum of The Philippines University gym.
With their 2-3 zone holding Pharex to 37 percent shooting (7 of 19) in
the third quarter, the Elite seized control of the match and gained a
first place tie with idle NLEX in Group A with 3-1 marks.
Rudy Lingganay scored on a hard drive with three seconds remaining to
power Max! Bond Super Glue to a stunning 77-75 win over Cobra Energy
Drink and into a first place tie in Group B.
Ex-pro Junjun Cabatu scored 19 points and Reil Cervantes added 13 for
the Sumos, who outplayed the Iron Men in the second half.
“Marami pa dapat i-improve ang team. Pero naroon na yung camaraderie
and yung team effort,” said Max! Bond Super Glue coach Pido Jarencio.
Cobra energy Drink star Paul Lee led all scorers with 23 points and
his basket with 6.8 seconds to play tied the game at 75-75.
The Iron Men, who picked up their first loss in three games, is now
joined by Max! Bond Super Glue, Cebuana Lhuillier and FCA on top of
Group
“We have two goals going into the game. First, we want to get back at
Pharex and second, we want to keep our streak going. I’m happy we
achieved both,” said Blackwater coach Leo Isaac.
“I thought the players showed a high level of confidence and they
believe in one another. I thought that was the key.”
Pharex opened the third quarter with a 46-42 lead before Gio Ciriacruz
knocked a 3-pointer as Blackwater scored the next 19 points to take
the lead for good. Another 3 by Ciriacruz gave the Elite their biggest
lead of the game at 66-50 late in the period.
Rocky Acidre scored 14 points and had seven rebounds, Ian Mazo added
13 points and Jonathan Belorio had 10 boards for Blackwater which
outrebounded Pharex, 49-41.
The win also put the Elite in the hunt for an outright spot in the
second round of the playoffs but Isaac said they’re taking it one game
at a time.
“Right now that’s not a priority. But if we will have the opportunity,
we’ll take it,” he said.
Jeff Morial and Raymond Aguilar each scored 15 points for Pharex,

Andrian Celeda scored 27 points and the Blackwater Elite rolled to
their third consecutive win with a vengeful 86-75 romp over Pharex
Thursday in the classification round of the PBA D-League Foundation
Cup at the Lyceum of The Philippines University gym.
With their 2-3 zone holding Pharex to 37 percent shooting (7 of 19) in
the third quarter, the Elite seized control of the match and gained a
first place tie with idle NLEX in Group A with 3-1 marks.
Rudy Lingganay scored on a hard drive with three seconds remaining to
power Max! Bond Super Glue to a stunning 77-75 win over Cobra Energy
Drink and into a first place tie in Group B.
Ex-pro Junjun Cabatu scored 19 points and Reil Cervantes added 13 for
the Sumos, who outplayed the Iron Men in the second half.
“Marami pa dapat i-improve ang team. Pero naroon na yung camaraderie
and yung team effort,” said Max! Bond Super Glue coach Pido Jarencio.
Cobra energy Drink star Paul Lee led all scorers with 23 points and
his basket with 6.8 seconds to play tied the game at 75-75.
The Iron Men, who picked up their first loss in three games, is now
joined by Max! Bond Super Glue, Cebuana Lhuillier and FCA on top of
Group
“We have two goals going into the game. First, we want to get back at
Pharex and second, we want to keep our streak going. I’m happy we
achieved both,” said Blackwater coach Leo Isaac.
“I thought the players showed a high level of confidence and they
believe in one another. I thought that was the key.”
Pharex opened the third quarter with a 46-42 lead before Gio Ciriacruz
knocked a 3-pointer as Blackwater scored the next 19 points to take
the lead for good. Another 3 by Ciriacruz gave the Elite their biggest
lead of the game at 66-50 late in the period.
Rocky Acidre scored 14 points and had seven rebounds, Ian Mazo added
13 points and Jonathan Belorio had 10 boards for Blackwater which
outrebounded Pharex, 49-41.
The win also put the Elite in the hunt for an outright spot in the
second round of the playoffs but Isaac said they’re taking it one game
at a time.
“Right now that’s not a priority. But if we will have the opportunity,
we’ll take it,” he said.
Jeff Morial and Raymond Aguilar each scored 15 points for Pharex,

John Raymundo made a key assist that set up Clifford Hodge for a
three-point play that lifted NLEX to a thrilling 88-87 victory over PC
Gilmore, Tuesday, in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the JCSGO gym.
Only 3.9 seconds was left on the game clock when the 5-foot-10 guard
squeezed himself off a double-team and fed Hodge underneath the
basket.
The 6-foot-5 forward made an awkward shot but it somehow fell into the
basket and tied the game. Fouled on that play, Hodge calmly sank his
bonus free throw to put the Road Warriors ahead.
“I had no more option. Then nakita ko si Hodge na libre so pinasa ko
agad,” said Raymundo of his game-winning feed.
In the first game, Alfredo Gerilla scored 15 points and Alan Husted
knocked two huge 3-point shots in the fourth quarter as the FCA
Cultivators subdued the Maynilad Water Dragons, 77-67, in Group B
play.
PC Gilmore called for time with 1.1 seconds to play. And the Wizards
nearly pulled it off but Jett Vidal’s game-winning attempt went short
as time expired.
The win was the third in four game for the Road Warriors, who assumed
the solo lead in Group A. PC Gilmore fell to 2-2 record.
Hodge scored 21` points and Ian Sanggalang grabbed 13 rebounds for
NLEX, which outrebounded PC Gilmore, 46-40.
“Our defense collapsed in the early going. That’s the reason why [PC
Gilmore} scored 44 points in the first half. But the guys did a good
job catching up,” said NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez.
The Wizards led by 14 points (63-49) late in the third, but NLEX
outscored them 14-2, over the next 2:30 minutes to trim the deficit to
just one going into the fourth. Chris Ellis started the run with
3-point play and dunk and Jaypee Belencion (16 points) ended it with
successive 3-pointers.
Carlo Lastimosa led all scorers with 22 points and his lay-p with 1:29
to play gave the Wizards an 86-81 lead.
Mark Acosta scored 18 points and Vidal added 11 for the Wizards.
After losing their composure in the second quarter, the Cultivators
rallied from a seven point deficit in the third before taking control
with a 9-0 run.
The win was the second in three game for the Cultivators, who bounced
back from a 58-80 blowout loss against Cebuana Lhuillier two-weeks
ago.
“We had a good start but lost our focus in the second quarter when
Maynilad made a run. I thought the players responded well in the
second half,” said FCA coach Arsenio Dysangco, himself drawing a
technical midway in the second for continuous complaining to the
officials.
Up next for the Cultivators is winless Café France on May 5.
“That’s a problem for us. We won’t play in the next three weeks. We’ll
see how to keep the guys in shape,” he said.
After Garvo Lanete tied the game at 57-57, Alex Mallari and Husted
hit successive 3-pointers and Gerilla completed a 3-point play to give
FCA a nine-point lead.
Lanete, who led all scorers with 21 points, scored on a layup in the
ensuing play but Husted answered with another 3-pointer to make it a
10-point game. Husted and Mallari scored 13 points apiece.
Jose Lim was the only other Water Dragon in doubled figures with 10
points. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak by Maynilad, which
played without suspended coach Frankie Lim.
Maynilad shot poorly (22 percent) in the first quarter but clawed back
in the next as Lanete warmed up. During that stretch, the Cultivators
became tentative and wilted as the Water Dragons played physical.
Maynilad (2-2) opened a 49-42 lead in the third quarter but lost their
rhythm following a series of turnovers, mostly on errant passes. FCA
exploited the opportunity and outscored the Water Dragons, 15-6, over
four minutes to take a 2-point lead entering the third.
