PBA D-League Playoff Chase Resumes January 3

The chase for playoff berths in the season-opening Philippine Basketball Association D-League Aspirants' Cup resumes in earnest on January 3 with nine of the eleven competing teams still in contention for post-elims berths.

Three of the teams - pace-setting Cebuana Lhuillier (8-1), Freego Jeans (6-2) and Big Chill (6-3) are sure to make it while NLEX (5-1) is also practically there.

The Gems and Road Warriors, finalists in the inuagural D-League tournament earlier this year, collide on January 12 with possibly one outright semifinals berth on the line with the loser probably battling the Jeans Makers for the other outright spot if current form holds up.

The Superchargers hope to lock on to the second twice-to-beat quarterfinals edge but if Blackwater (3-3), RnW Pacific Pipes (4-3) or Boracay Rum (4-4) catch fire in January, Big Chill may have to go through a playoff to get that lofty placing.

PC Gilmore (2-5) and CafeFrance (2-5) both have an outside shot of making the Top Six but may need to win their remaining games. DUB Unlimited (1-7) and Cobra Energy Drink (1-8) are out of contention but could play the spoilers' role in the final six playdates.

Cebuana Lhuillier has been sizzling behind the heady performances of forward Vic Manuel and guards Terrence Romeo and ex-pro Jai Reyes and hope to get Kevin Alas back for the stretch run after the Letran guard spent several weeks in the US on a training trip.

NLEX has the core of the SEA Games gold medal winning team in its fold, with six members of the Sinag Pilipinas team in its fold as well as San Sebastian's frontline but the loss of sniper Roland Pascual (ACL) means Garvo Lanete and Chris Ellis have to step up their games alongside RR Garcia, Calvin Abueva and Clifford Hodge.

Freego Jeans also lost a vital cog when back-up guard Jer4ick Canada opted to turn pro overseas, leaving a huge gap behind star playmaker Lester Alvarez in the team's rotation though they finally have standout wingman Alex Nuyles healthy again to join Eric Camson, Janus Lozada and Bacon Austria.

Dark horse Big Chill needs consistent performances from Fil-Ams Alex Mallari, Keith Jensen and Elliot Tan as well as local workhorses Raffy Peyes, Jopher Custodio and Jessie Collado to go further in the tournament.(pr)

NLEX vs. C.Lhuillier, a dream match-up

The final act of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup between the NLEX Road
Warriors and the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems is a dream match-up.

It features two teams whose bench are the envy of many and players
with remarkable skills and talents.

The Gems secured their spot in the series by dispatching the PC
Gilmore Wizards, 83-55, in a lopsided semi-final match-up last
Thursday.

The Road Warriors were just as powerful in their 74-61 victory against
the Max! Bond Super Glue Sumos.

Coaches of both teams readily declare this will be great series as the
two teams battle for the first championship trophy of the fledgling
league.

Game 1 of the best-of-three series is scheduled at 3 p.m. at The Arena
in San Juan.

The Road Warriors and the Gems have lots in common that makes this
series a certified “must-see”.

They are both hard workers and fierce competitors. They are defense
oriented and love to play physical.

Luigi Trillo, coach of Cebuana Lhuillier, called their Finals
appearance a humbling experience. “But there’s still a job to be done.
We can’t underachieve and be happy by just making the Finals.”

He said the Road Warrior are very athletic. “But I think we can match
up with them. They have their strengths and we have ours. It will be
great series,” Trillo declared.

NLEX coach Boyet Fernadez is just as ecstatic about their final act.
He said this is what they have prepared for over the last four months.

“The team is in high spirits. Three-fourths of our job is done. Were
confident that we can match up with them well,” Fernandez said.

Because it’s a short series, Fernandez said winning Game 1 is crucial.

“It’s very important in a series like this. Whoever plays defense well

Cebuana Lhuillier topples PC Gilmore, 83-55

Cebuana Lhuillier got significant contributions from just about
everybody and toppled the overmatched PC Gilmore Wizards, 83-55, in
their knockout semi-final duel Thursday that sent the Gems into the
championship series of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares
Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Gems got their game going early and pulled away in the third
quarter as Kevin Alas and James Sena took over the scoring and
frustrated their rivals.

Narciso Llagas was the most consistent scorer among the Gems, going 9
of 10 from the field and finishing with a game-high 19 points that
went with his 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Gems, the Group B top seed, also got outstanding efforts from
James Sena (11 points) and Ariel Mepana, who did a good job in taking
away the games of the Wizards’ big men.

They will need a lot of it in the finals.

The NLEX Road Warriors put on a dominating performance in the other
semi-final to smother Max! Bond Super Glue, 74-61, and arrange a title
duel with Cebuana Lhuillier.

Game 1 of the best-of-three series will start on Tuesday at The Arena
in San Juan.

The Road Warriors’ intention of securing their place in the
championship series was never in doubt.

They displayed their A-1 game. They got their offensive rhythm early.
And they punished the Sumos off the boards.

Their spectacular performance effectively put the Road Warriors in
total control by halftime, 43-25.

“Three-fourths of our job is done. Now, we have to prepare for Cebuana
Lhuillier. I think it will be tough series,” said NLEX coach Boyet
Fernandez.

Calvin Abueva scored 19 points, Ronald Pascual had 14 and Eric Salamat
added 11 for the Road Warriors, who outshot and outrebounded their
rivals before slowing down a bit in the fourth.


“I thought we rotated well and did a good job on defense,” said
Cebuana Lhuillier coach Luigi Trillo.

He admitted that PC Gilmore was not as deep as his team but cited the
Wizards downfall to their poor shooting. The Gems enjoyed their
biggest lead at 81-53 on Llagas’ basket with 2:50 remaining in the
game.

“I think their shooters – Carlo Lastimosa, Jett Vidal and Allan
Mangahas – got a lot of good looks. They just didn’t fall.”

As a team, the Gems shot 53 percent (31 of 59). They also dominated
the boards, 50-32, and were unselfish with their 25 assists.

In a game that mattered most, the Wizards played their worst. They
were slow on defense, they allowed themselves to be pushed around and
to make matters even worse, PC Gilmore made just 31 percent (19 of 61)
of its attempts.

The most significant threat encountered by the Gems came in the second
quarter when Vidal (8 points) layup to pull the Wizard within 24-26
with 3:59 left in the period.

But Cebuana Lhuillier quickly responded with 14-3 run to close the
quarter and led 38-29 at the half. Llagas and Allein Maliksi each
scored five points in that spurt and PC Gilmore never got closer then
eight points the rest of the way.

“It’s a humbling experience. It’s nice to be in the finals. But
there’s still job to be done. We can’t underachieve and be happy on
advancing to the finals,” Trillo said.

Jam Cortes and Eric Agas each scored 13 points for PC Gilmore.
Lastimosa, usually among the Wizards’ top scorers, managed just 9
points on 3 of 10 shooting and Mangahas, another marksman, turned in 5
points on 2 of 9 clip.

`It will be a tough battle', says Cebuana Lhuillier coach

Cebuana Lhuillier coach Luigi Trillo is convinced it will be a tough battle.

The Gems are up against Freego Jeans in a knockout quarterfinal
match-up that features two teams who love to play physical.

Cebuana Lhuillier swept its classification round assignment to emerge
the top seed in Group B. But Trillo claimed he ranked Freego Jeans
“right up their in the bracket.”

“They just got off to a bad start. But they won three of their last
four games,” Trillo noted.

The game is set at 4 p.m. at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The winner will advance to the semi-finals against the winner of the
quarterfinal match-up between Max! Bond Super Glue and Blackwater.

Trillo said defense will be for the Gems because the Falcons are very
disciplined.

He said the Gems must find a way to control [Jerick] Canada and
[Lester] Alvarez, Freego Jeans’ backcourt tandem who could be
dangerous once their 3-point shots find its mark. “[Alex] Nuyles and
[Roider] Cabrera can light it up also,” Trillo said.

“Freego has such composure. But if we can perform against Freego’s
change up defense and defend well against their motion offense, I
think we’ll have a chance,” Trillo said.

The other quarterfinals encounter between PC Gilmore and Pharex is
also expected to go down the wire.

The 2 o’clock match duel is a rematch between the two teams. The
Wizards beat the Bidang Generix, 99-97, in the closing seconds of
their first showdown in the classification round.

“It’s going to be tough playing them coming off a win. I hope we come
out aggressive and show no rustiness because of our long layoff
between games,” said PC Gilmore coach Richard del Rosario.

The Wizards have not had a game in nearly a month since closing their
classification round assignment against Blackwater.

In contrast, Pharex advanced to the round of eight by dispatching
pre-tournament favourite Cobra Energy Drink in the first round of the
playoffs on Tuesday.

So the Wizards enjoy the momentum and their confidence are obviously high.

“Having just one day to prepare, I think that’s the challenge,” said
Pharex coach Gian Carlo Tan when asked about his concerns against PC
Gilmore.

Tan promised to provide a tough challenge in their rematch.

“When we played the first time, we were not intense. We’re kind of
lackadaisical. That won’t be the case on Thursday,” Tan said. PR

Cebuana Lhuillier earns top seeding

Allein Maliksi scored 21 points and Cebuana Lhuillier earned the top
seeding in Group B with a 73-70 victory against Cobra Energy Drink on
Tuesday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the San Juan Gym.

The Gems finished with a 5-1 (win-loss) record at the close of the
classification round and earned an outright passage in the
quarterfinals along with idle Max! Bond Super Glue.

Cobra Energy Drink finished tied with Max! Bond Super Glue on 4-2
records and was were relegated as no. 3 seed because of the winner
over the other rule.

The Gems turned the game around in the third quarter after a sloppy
first half, outscoring the Ironmen, 27-18.

“Kahit no-bearing ang laro hindi pwede mag-relax. Dahil playoffs na,
you can’t be out of shape. You need to play hard and stay energized,”
said deputy coach Bong Hawkins.

Hawkins called the shots for the Gems in the absence of coach Luigi
Trillo, who served his one game suspension.

In the other game, Powerade eliminated Café France with a 77-65
victory in their knockout match to clinch the last playoff berth in
Group B.

The Junior Tigers blew a 13-point lead late in the third quarter but
held off a spirited comeback by the Scorpions in the fourth with a
13-1 run.

Alvin Padilla scored all his 14 points in the fourth including eight
in that telling run that practically put the Scorpions away.

Cobra Energy Drink led 37-32 at halftime but the Gems picked up their
offensive rhythm in the third. They made 52 percent of their shots (12
of 23) while their defense held the Ironemen to 6 of 14 shooting.

Cebuana Lhuillier trailed 47-54 with four minutes to play in the third
before closing the period with a 12-1 run for a 59-55 lead entering
the fourth.

Paul Sanga scattered 27 points and Paul Lee added 11 for the Ironmen,
committed 19 turnovers that netted the Gems 19 points.

Cebuana Lhuillier outlasted Max! Bond Super Glue, 73-58, in a very

heated PBA D-League Foundation Cup encounter at the Trinity University

of Asia Gym in Quezon City that saw both coaches and a player from

each side ejected.



The win was the fourth in five games for the Gems, tying them with

idle Cobra Energy Drink for the top spot in Group B while the loss

snapped the Sumos' three-game win streak and left them tied at 3-2

with the FCA Cultivators.



Allain Maliksi and Kevin Alas again had the hot hands for the Gems,

while Pari Llagas contributed a double-double. Cebuana Lhuillier took

a 25-8 lead in the first nine miniutes of the game and never looked

back.



The 6-3 Maliksi finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks while

the 6-0 Alas had 14 points and 5 boards. Llagas had one of his better

D-League outings with 14 markers and 10 caroms.



The game though was marred by an ugly incident with 22.2 seconds left

before halftime following an altercation between Gems center Ariel

Mepana and Sumos' center-forward Junjun Cabatu.



Both benches cleared and Gems coach Luigi Trillo as well as Sumos

coach Pido Jarencio exchanged more than words and shoves near

midcourt. The two mentors were thrown out along with their players for

flagrant misconduct.



Things seemed to cool down a bit in the third period although less

than ninety seconds into the second half, JR Sena of Cebuana Lhuillier

was also assessed a flagrant foul 1 while Roel Hugnatan of Max! Bond

was given a technical for second motion.



Jerick Fortuna was the lone bright spot for the Sumos with 10 points,

6 rebounds and 4 assists as top center Reil Cervantes went nowhere

offensiuvely.



In the first game, which meant little and a lot at the same time,

CafeFrance outlasted Jr. Powerade Tigers, 85-83.



The breakthrough win came on the sixth try for CafeFrance, which was

important according to coach Mon Jose coming as it did against a team

they will play against once more on May 24, this time with a

first-round berth on the line. Junior Powerade fell to a similar 1-5

card at the end of the classification round.



The Scorpions trailed by ten points, 61-71, late in the third, rallied

behind the double-double heroics of Mon Masbayo (21 points and 10

rebounds), and grabbed the upperhand at 82-78 with 2:33 left.

The Tigers kept it close but were unable to tie or win the game at the

end of regulation.

Max! Bond Super Glue looks to clinch an outright quarterfinal berth in

the PBA D-League Foundation Cup when it tests the mettle of Cebuana

Lhuillier on Thursday.



Both teams are expected to play with urgency in the 4 p.m. duel at the

Trinity University gym as the Gems are also aspiring to stay in the

hunt for an outright passage into the second round of the knockout

playoffs.



The Sumos and Gems are tied at second place with a 3-1 record behind

Group B leader Cobra Energy Drink.



The Ironmen are also in the hunt for one of two outright quarterfinal

berths up for grab in Group B following its 71-70 decision against FCA

on Thursday.



In the other scheduled game, Café France hopes to close out its

classification round assignment on a winning note when it takes on

Junior Powerade at 2 p.m.



The Scorpions remain the only winless team in the league but they hope

to finally earn a breakthrough win against the Tigers (1-4), another

team that is still a work in progress.



Since losing their opening assignment (61-82) against Maynilad last

March 22, the Sumos have won their next three games, capping it with a

76-64 demolition of Junior Powerade last May 3.



Max! Bong Super Glue coach Pido Jarencio said their latest victory is

a good motivation to their game against the Gems.



“I expect a tough game against Cebuana [Lhuillier]. Malalaki sila and

their bench are deep. Talent-wise nakakalamang sila. I just hope our

defense is good enough to slow them down,” Jarencio said.



The Gems though are not taking the Sumos for granted.



“They’re a veteran team. Coach Pido rely’s on his veterans and they

have been finding their rhythm,” said Cebuana Lhuillier coach Luigi

Trillo.



Trillo insists the Sumos will be tough match-up with their skills and

their confident big men.



“[Rudy] Lingganay is playing like he is the best point guard in the

league. They also have big line up that gives other teams fits like

[Reil] Cervantes, [Junjun] Cabatu and [Roel] Hugnatan,” Trillo said.PR

After a woeful shooting in the first half, PC Gilmore exploded for
10 3-point shots in the second half and plastered RnW Pacific Pipes,
75-59, Tuesday in the classification round of the PBA D-League
Foundation Cup at the Letran gym.

The Wizards made just 32 percent of their shots (12 of 38) in the
first half but seized control late in the third quarter as Pacific
Pipes continue to struggle with its offense.

Eric Agas showed the way for PC Gilmore with 15 points. Jett Vidal had
13. Allan Mangahas added 11, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Jam Cortes cornered 13 rebounds as PC Gilmore outrebounded Pacific Pipes, 52-45.

“Our shooting in the first half didn’t click. We’re missing easy
lay-ups and free throws. We we’re tight. Siguro dahil sa haba ng
break. But I told the guys if we can’s score we must at least get
stops. Good thing we made our shots we when we needed,” said PC
Gilmore coach Richard del Rosario.

In Group B play, Cebuana Lhuillier weathered a fiery charge by
Maynilad down the stretch and got away with a 91-89 victory.

Obviously, the Gems learned from their stunning 73-77 loss against
Junior Powerade. They played with a high level of urgency and energy
against Maynilad and didn’t back down when the Water Dragons became
physical.

Emotions ran high in the second half with Maynilad coach Frankie Lim
getting tossed from the game with 7:14 remaining for continuous
complaining.

“We played with a great team effort,” said Cebuana Lhuillier coach
Luigi Trillo, who reserved his praise for guard Kevin Alas.

“He is a Letran Knight but he played with a heart of a Lion,” Trillo said.

Allein Maliksi led all scorers with 28 points. Alas had 27, including
his teams last six points in the final 45 seconds to secure the win.

Cebuana Lhuillier improved to 3-1 while Maynilad closed out its
classification round assignment with a 3-3 mark.

The Gems shot 54 percent in the first half to built a 52-36 advantage
that held on till the end.

Garbo Lanete’s basket with 53 seconds left pushed Maynilad to within
82-85 to make the game exciting but the Water Dragons ran out of time.

The Wizards made 19 of 40 attempts in the second half and 10 of 20
3-point tries. In contrast, Pacific Pipes shot just 13 of 29 and was 1
of 4 from 3-point range.

The Wizards, who bounced back from an 87-88 loss against NLEX two
weeks ago, improved to 3-2 (win-loss) record in Group A to remain in
the hunt for an outright spot in the second round of the playoffs.
Pacific Pipes picked up its fourth loss in a row and fell to 1-4.

“Our game against Blackwater is crucial,” Del Rosario said. The
Wizards and the Elite wind up their classification round campaign on
May 5.

Anthony del Rio’s two free throws put Pacific Pipes ahead for the last
time at 44-43, before PC Gilmore closed out the third quarter with 7-1
run. Luis Sinco ended the spurt with a 3-pointer to give the Wizards a
50-45 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Wizards extended the lead to 13 by scoring the first eight points
of the fourth.

The Wizards highlighted their second half shooting spree by knocking
their last five baskets from the behind the arc.

Vic Manuel led Pacific Pipes with 20 points but didn’t get enough
support from his teammates. Jim Viray was the only other players in
double figure with 13.
