NLEX braces for `very tough' battle

Games on Thursday
(Ynares Sports Arena)
      Pasig City

2p.m. – Cebuana Lhuillier vs PC Gilmore
4p.m. – NLEX vs Max! Bond Super Glue

NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez braces for a “very tough” battle when his
Road Warriors and the Max! Bond Super Glue Sumos clash on Thursday for
a Finals berth in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.

The two teams arranged a semi-final showdown following contrasting
victories of their respective quarterfinal match on Tuesday. Max! Bond
Super Glue eliminated Blackwater, 74-71, courtesy of a clutch basket
from Reil Cervantes while NLEX pounced on an overmatched FCA team,
100-71.

According to Fernandez, Max! Bond Super Glue is a tough challenge
mainly because of its experienced core that features Junjun Cabatu,
Reil Cervantes, Lei Mar Navarro, Rudy Lingganay and Roel Hugnatan.

“We can match up well with their bigs. But I don’t think we have
answer for their experience,” Fernandez admits.

Youth, he said, is his team’s valuable asset so he hopes the Road
Warriors would take advantage of their aggressiveness and quickness.

“Our guys are young. Hopefully we could match their intensity and take
advantage of our quickness,” said Fernandez, assuring his troops would
show up for the 4 p.m. duel “super electrified.”

“Management has given us all the support we need and more. I think
that’s more than enough motivation for us to try and do the best we
can to win.”

Pido Jarencio, the Max! Bond Super Glue coach, insists they are coming
into this all-important knockout match as an underdog.

Powered by four Fil-Ams, referring to Clifford Hodge, Christian Reyes,
Karl Duhesa and Christopher Ellis, Jarencio said NLEX presents a
mismatch nightmare.

“Basta kami padikit-dikit lang. Ngayon kung may opportunity na
dumating ibang usapan na yan,” he said.

Whichever team wins will advance to the best-of-three championship
series against the winner of the other semi-final between Cebuana
Lhuillier and PC Gilmore.

Game time is set at 2 o’clock and Cebuana Lhuillier coach Luigi Trillo
said the Gems cannot “overachieve at this point.”

Trillo said PC Gilmore is a good scoring team that loves to
transition. And it has guards who like to score and create.

“Can we defend that? That’s my challenge to our guys,” he said.

In contrast, PC Gilmore coach Richard del Rosario claims he and his
team are coming into the game without any pressure considering they
are up against the pre-tournament favourite.
“There really is no pressure on us. However, since it’s a knockout
game there’s always a chance for an upset and were going all out to
make it to the finals,” he said.PR

Blackwater looks to put on one good against Max!

Blackwater looks to put on one good against Max! Bond Super Glue in
their quarterfinal match-up on Tuesday to advance in the Final Four of
the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.

The Elite and the Sumos battle at 2 p.m. at The Arena in an
interesting duel that could go other way.

Blackwater coach Leo Isaac said the Sumos are a tough match-up but
hopes their energy and patience would be enough to offset their
deficiencies.

The Elite got past Junior Powerade, 70-66 in the first round to
advance to the quarterfinals.

“We will give it our best and hope we can match up with them very
well,” Isaac said.

“All you need is one good game and you advance to the semis.”

Max! Bond Super Glue coach Pico Jarencro insists Blackwater is a
dangerous team but is confident his troops will overcome the
challenge.

“This is playoff time. Our team is prepared and ready to play
consistently for four quarters. We don’t want to miss this
opportunity,” he said.

The winner of the Blackwater-Max! Bond Super Glue encounter will
advance to the semi-final against the winner of the other quarterfinal
showdown between NLEX and FCA at 4 o’clock.

NLEX coach Boyet Fernadez said he expects tough game against the
Cultivators, who are loaded with experienced players.

“We have to bring our defensive game if we want to make it to the
semi-finals,” Fernandez said. “It will be a very tough game but we
will be ready.”

The Cultivators make it to the round of eight by dispatching RnW
Pacific Pipes in the first round.

“NLEX is a very deep team. Any of their players are capable to start
with any team. I hope we get lucky when we play them. That’s our only
chance,” said FCA coach Arsenio Dysangco. (pr)

Games Tuesday (Meralco Gym)

2:00 pm - Max! Bond Super Glue vs. FCA Cultivators

4:00 pm - Freego Jeans vs. NLEX Road Warriors

Cebuana Lhuillier outlasted Max! Bond Super Glue, 73-58, in a very

heated PBA D-League Foundation Cup encounter at the Trinity University

of Asia Gym in Quezon City that saw both coaches and a player from

each side ejected.

The win was the fourth in five games for the Gems, tying them with

idle Cobra Energy Drink for the top spot in Group B while the loss

snapped the Sumos' three-game win streak and left them tied at 3-2

with the FCA Cultivators.

Allain Maliksi and Kevin Alas again had the hot hands for the Gems,

while Pari Llagas contributed a double-double. Cebuana Lhuillier took

a 25-8 lead in the first nine miniutes of the game and never looked

back.

The 6-3 Maliksi finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks while

the 6-0 Alas had 14 points and 5 boards. Llagas had one of his better

D-League outings with 14 markers and 10 caroms.

The game though was marred by an ugly incident with 22.2 seconds left

before halftime following an altercation between Gems center Ariel

Mepana and Sumos' center-forward Junjun Cabatu.

Both benches cleared and Gems coach Luigi Trillo as well as Sumos

coach Pido Jarencio exchanged more than words and shoves near

midcourt. The two mentors were thrown out along with their players for

flagrant misconduct.

Things seemed to cool down a bit in the third period although less

than ninety seconds into the second half, JR Sena of Cebuana Lhuillier

was also assessed a flagrant foul 1 while Roel Hugnatan of Max! Bond

was given a technical for second motion.

Jerick Fortuna was the lone bright spot for the Sumos with 10 points,

6 rebounds and 4 assists as top center Reil Cervantes went nowhere

offensiuvely.

In the first game, which meant little and a lot at the same time,

CafeFrance outlasted Jr. Powerade Tigers, 85-83.

The breakthrough win came on the sixth try for CafeFrance, which was

important according to coach Mon Jose coming as it did against a team

they will play against once more on May 24, this time with a

first-round berth on the line. Junior Powerade fell to a similar 1-5

card at the end of the classification round.

The Scorpions trailed by ten points, 61-71, late in the third, rallied

behind the double-double heroics of Mon Masbayo (21 points and 10

rebounds), and grabbed the upperhand at 82-78 with 2:33 left.

The Tigers kept it close but were unable to tie or win the game at the

end of regulation.

Games Thursday

(Trinity University gym)

2 p.m. – Café France vs Junior Powerade

4 p.m. – Cebuana Lhuillier vs Max! Bond Super Glue

Max! Bond Super Glue looks to clinch an outright quarterfinal berth in

the PBA D-League Foundation Cup when it tests the mettle of Cebuana

Lhuillier on Thursday.

Both teams are expected to play with urgency in the 4 p.m. duel at the

Trinity University gym as the Gems are also aspiring to stay in the

hunt for an outright passage into the second round of the knockout

playoffs.

The Sumos and Gems are tied at second place with a 3-1 record behind

Group B leader Cobra Energy Drink.

The Ironmen are also in the hunt for one of two outright quarterfinal

berths up for grab in Group B following its 71-70 decision against FCA

on Thursday.

In the other scheduled game, Café France hopes to close out its

classification round assignment on a winning note when it takes on

Junior Powerade at 2 p.m.

The Scorpions remain the only winless team in the league but they hope

to finally earn a breakthrough win against the Tigers (1-4), another

team that is still a work in progress.

Since losing their opening assignment (61-82) against Maynilad last

March 22, the Sumos have won their next three games, capping it with a

76-64 demolition of Junior Powerade last May 3.

Max! Bong Super Glue coach Pido Jarencio said their latest victory is

a good motivation to their game against the Gems.

“I expect a tough game against Cebuana [Lhuillier]. Malalaki sila and

their bench are deep. Talent-wise nakakalamang sila. I just hope our

defense is good enough to slow them down,” Jarencio said.

The Gems though are not taking the Sumos for granted.

“They’re a veteran team. Coach Pido rely’s on his veterans and they

have been finding their rhythm,” said Cebuana Lhuillier coach Luigi

Trillo.

Trillo insists the Sumos will be tough match-up with their skills and

their confident big men.

“[Rudy] Lingganay is playing like he is the best point guard in the

league. They also have big line up that gives other teams fits like

[Reil] Cervantes, [Junjun] Cabatu and [Roel] Hugnatan,” Trillo said.PR

Games Tuesday
 (Markina Sports Complex)
2 p.m. – RnW Pacific Pipes vs Pharex
4 p.m. – Junior Powerade vs Max! Bond Super Glue

Max! Bond Super Glue will be aspiring for a first place tie in when it
battles the unpredictable Junior Powerade on Tuesday in the
classification round of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.

The Sumos have won their last two games and hope to make it three in a
row in their 4 p.m. match-up against the Tigers at the Marikina Sports
Center in their bid to pull abreast with Cebuana Lhuillier and Cobra
Energy Drink on top of Group B with a 3-1 records.

Considering their 1-3 record and inconsistent play, the Tigers should
be an easy prey for the Sumos, whose 77-75 victory against tournament
favorite Cobra Energy Drink last April 14 has made them a potential
title contender.

But Pido Jarencio, the Max! Bond Super Glue coach, insists the Tigers
are a dangerous opponent regardless of their record.

“We can’t take [Powerade] for granted. They have a good coach and a
good system. They have players who are playing very well,” Jarencio
pointed out.

He stressed that any team in the league is capable of winning at any
given time and it’s just a matter of which side wants it more.

“I keep telling that to my players. Hopefully, we could play
consistently and work hard as a team, especially on defense,” Jarencio
said.

In Group A play, Pharex tries to rebound from disappointing
back-to-back defeats when it takes on slumping RnW Pacific Pipes at 2
p.m.

Among the early favorites, the Bidang Generix (2-2) suffered a jolting
blow in their campaign after falling in defeat against PC Gilmore,
73-77, in the closing seconds of their duel before being smothered by
Blackwater, 75-86, three weeks ago.

Observers contend it would be tough to motivate the Bidang Generix
following those frustrating setbacks, but Pharex coach Gian Carlo Tan
doesn’t subscribe to it.

He said it’s all a matter of effort and character.

“I think it’s not a question of confidence right now, but a matter of
chemistry. Staying together during difficult moments of the game and
staying true to the ideals of our team,” Tan contended.

“If we’re able to commit on the defense for 40 [minutes], we’ll give
our selves a chance to win and really that’s all we want to see from
the team.”

RnW Pacific Pipes is in a much challenging situation. After its 76-72
win against PC Gilmore on opening day, the team has lost its last four
games.

Hopefully, things will turn for the better as Rnw Pacific Pipes winds
up its classification round assignment.

A delayed telecast of these 2 games will be aired later at 6pm
over IBC-13. PR

Andrian Celeda scored 27 points and the Blackwater Elite rolled to
their third consecutive win with a vengeful 86-75 romp over Pharex
Thursday in the classification round of the PBA D-League Foundation
Cup at the Lyceum of The Philippines University gym.

With their 2-3 zone holding Pharex to 37 percent shooting (7 of 19) in
the third quarter, the Elite seized control of the match and gained a
first place tie with idle NLEX in Group A with 3-1 marks.

Rudy Lingganay scored on a hard drive with three seconds remaining to
power Max! Bond Super Glue to a stunning 77-75 win over Cobra Energy
Drink and into a first place tie in Group B.

Ex-pro Junjun Cabatu scored 19 points and Reil Cervantes added 13 for
the Sumos, who outplayed the Iron Men in the second half.

“Marami pa dapat i-improve ang team. Pero naroon na yung camaraderie
and yung team effort,” said Max! Bond Super Glue coach Pido Jarencio.

Cobra energy Drink star Paul Lee led all scorers with 23 points and
his basket with 6.8 seconds to play tied the game at 75-75.

The Iron Men, who picked up their first loss in three games, is now
joined by Max! Bond Super Glue, Cebuana Lhuillier and FCA on top of
Group
“We have two goals going into the game. First, we want to get back at
Pharex and second, we want to keep our streak going. I’m happy we
achieved both,” said Blackwater coach Leo Isaac.

“I thought the players showed a high level of confidence and they
believe in one another. I thought that was the key.”

Pharex opened the third quarter with a 46-42 lead before Gio Ciriacruz
knocked a 3-pointer as Blackwater scored the next 19 points to take
the lead for good. Another 3 by Ciriacruz gave the Elite their biggest
lead of the game at 66-50 late in the period.

Rocky Acidre scored 14 points and had seven rebounds, Ian Mazo added
13 points and Jonathan Belorio had 10 boards for Blackwater which
outrebounded Pharex, 49-41.

The win also put the Elite in the hunt for an outright spot in the
second round of the playoffs but Isaac said they’re taking it one game
at a time.

“Right now that’s not a priority. But if we will have the opportunity,
we’ll take it,” he said.

Jeff Morial and Raymond Aguilar each scored 15 points for Pharex,
which fell to 2-2 (win-loss) record after their second disappointing
loss.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Morial pulled the Bidang Generix to 69-76
with five minutes to play but Gerald Lapuz split his free throws and
Mazo added three more to bring the lead back to double digit.

Early showdown pits two title contenders

Games on March 22, Tuesday
      (FEU gym)

2 p.m. – Max Bond Super Glue vs. Maynilad
4 p.m. – NLEX vs. Pharex

AN early showdown pitting two title contender highlights Tuesday's
doubleheader of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the FEU gym in
Morayta.

On the day Max! Bond Super Glue makes it debut, all eyes will be on the
potentially explosive encounter between the NLEX Road Warriors and the
Pharex Batang Generix set at 4 p.m.

The match features two of the pre-season favorites for the inaugural
championship of the fledgling league and two of the three teams
currently on top of Group A.

Behind the combined 34 points of San Sebastian stalwart Calvin Abueva
and free agent Ogie Menor, the Road Warriors flattened Freego Jeans in
its opening match, 82-71.

Not to be outdone, the Batang Generix were equally impressive in a
100-90 demolition of Black Water as Marlon Adolfo exploded for 25
points and Jayson Deutchman posted double-double figures of 16 markers
and 10 rebounds.

As if that’s not enough, Pharex coach Gian Carlo Tan admitted the team
has yet to play as one cohesive unit.

“The team has not really experienced a time to bond and know each
other. Good thing our defense hold and enable us to win. I hope we
jell sooner than later,” Tan said.

Coach Pido Jarencio and his Sumos are the last ones to see action for
the first time, opening their campaign with a 2 p.m. match up with the
Maynilad Water Dragons in a meeting between teams from Group B.

Jarencio will be banking on a core of young and veteran players that
included Santiago Cabatu, Roel Hugnatan, Rudy Lingganay, Reil
Cervantes, Mark Benitez and his own players from Santo Tomas, Jeric
Teng and Jeric Fortuna.

The Water Dragons, powered by the roster of reigning NCAA seniors cage
champion San Beda, fell to the Cobra Ironmen in their debut, 78-70.

These games will be aired right after on delayed telecast at 6:00pm over IBC-13.(pr)
