SANA’A, Yemen--The Nokia RP U-18 team battles Chinese-Taipei in the
knockout quarterfinals of the Fiba-Asia U-18 Championship on Wednesday
at the 22nd May Gym here.
The Filipinos, backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation,
formalized their entry in the eight-team round by besting Iraq, 68-59,
on Monday to close out the second round with a 3-2 mark behind China’s
5-0 record. Joining them in the next round are groupmates Yemen (3-2)
and Japan (3-2).
China will be up against Lebanon, Japan against Korea and Yemen
against Iran in the round that will determine the semifinalists. The
RP-Chinese Taipei game is set at 6 pm (Manila time).
Head coach Eric Altamirano said that his team needs to play more
consistently, needing to come back from two stinging loses to China
and Yemen. Chinese-Taipei plays a lot like the Philippines so the
consistency factor is again the main focus.
“I think the key at this level is to play consistently. There is no
point in playing well one day and going down the next,” he said.
“Chinese-Taipei is almost the same size as our team although they have
taller players. We will take advantage of our rest day today (Tuesday)
as we aim to go out strong tomorrow,”said Altamirano, who said that
the team needs two wins to make to the finals.
Altamirano is aiming for bigger things as the Philippines last placed
eighth in this tournament in 2008.
“Our initial target was to reach the quarterfinals. But that was not
as important from the exposure point of view as that of the results,”
he said.“This is what the boys have to understand and play. We have
been focusing on stressing upon this factor at every training
session,” he said.
Altamirano adds: “We came here looking for consolidating on what
gained in Johor and for continuity of the National development
program. We also expected tougher competition in terms of playing
taller, stronger and more mature teams.”
In the game against Iraq, Kiefer Ravena topscored with 23 points and
four assists followed by Mike Tolomia’s eight.
The tournament dangles three tickets to the 2011 FIBA U19 World
Championship to be played in Latvia next year.(pr)

Nokia RP U-18 thumps Japan
SANA’A, Yemen—The Nokia RP U-18 team bounced back from two stinging
wins to bamboozle Japan, 75,57, on Sunday to boost further its bid for
the eight-team quarterfinals of the 21st FIBA Asia U18 Championship at
the 22nd May Arena here.
The Filipinos, backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO Corporation, tore
the game wide open by outscoring the Japanese, 25-8, in the midway
through the game to nail a 2-2 record and hand the Japanese their very
first loss in the tournament with a 3-1 record. China still lords it
over the Group F standings with an impeccable 3-0 mark as the
Philippines now carry a 2-2 record.
The Philippines was scheduled to battle winless Iraq at 4 pm (Manila
time) yesterday to cement its position as the third placing team in
the group, ahead of Yemen (2-1), The top four teams will get into the
knockout quarterfinals against the four qualifiers from Group E.
With a lock at the top three slots in the other group at Korea (3-1),
Iran (3-1) and Lebanon (2-1), while the last slot is still a tossup
among Kazakshtan and Chinese-Taipei.
Kiefer Ravena topscored for the Philippines with 18 points while
Raphael Banal chipped in with 14, nine of those coming from rainbow
country as the team shot 45 percent from there ( 9 of 20 tries) while
hitting 31 of 58 shots from the field.
“It was good those shots went in early in the game,” Philippines coach
Eric Altamirano said. “I’m proud the way boys began with speed,
especially after two tiring games (against China and Yemen, both of
which Philippines lost).”
“What made me really pleased was the way we kept our intensity,” he said.
The Filipinos were hanging to a 32-25 lead in the first five minutes
of the second quarter when Ravena scored back-to-back baskets on the
paint to start a run, which was capped by Von Pessumal’s three-pointer
for 16-point lead at half time.
With Ravena, Jeth Rosario and Cris Toloma scoring at will, the
Philippines widened its lead a 55-33, the highest in the game.
Seiya Ando scored a game-high 22 points for Japan.
“I liked the way we dominated the game, considering that it was really
close last time around,” said Altamirano, whose team only defeated the
same Japan team, 64-59, in the last year’s FIBA Asia U16 Championship
at Johor Bahru.

MERALCO-GINEBRA TIFF NO HOLDS BARRED
A gauntlet has been thrown down by officials of Barangay Ginebra and
newcomer Meralco, the two ballclubs that will duke it out in the Oct.
3 inaugural game of the PBA Philippine Cup, kicking off the 36th
season at the Araneta Coliseum.
Kings alternate governor Robert Non and Bolts board representative
Ramon Segismundo minced no words at the close of a three-day PBA
planning session in Bangkok last week in vowing to throw everything
into the encounter except their pension funds.
“Our employees wearing orange shirts will be there in full force,”
announced Segismundo, Meralco senior vice president and head of human resources.
“We know that Ginebra has a huge following, but we hope to also make
our presence felt.”
Segismundo and Non, along with PBA commissioner Chito Salud and
several other governors, including league chairman Rene Pardo of B-Meg
Derby Ace, joined sportswriters after dinner one evening at the Amari
Watergate Hotel and engaged each other in friendly banter.
Non, San Miguel Corporation’s basketball operations chief, smiled
coyly on hearing the veiled challenge.
“That, I have to see,” said Non, agreeing to a suggestion Ginebra may
have to ask its fans to come in red.”
“Puwede ‘yan,” Non said, laughing. “Para magka-alaman agad ng maaga pa.”
An opening day featuring Ginebra is a rare occurrence because the PBA,
assured of a traditionally large inaugural crowd, usually schedules
the Kings on the next play date to ensure back-to-back SRO venues.
But a special guest has personal history dating back to the glory
years of both Meralco and Ginebra, making for a gripping subplot.
“Who can resist when you have the Big J, Robert Jaworski, there on
opening day?” said Salud, who revealed that the former Meralco star –
during the old MICAA days in the ‘70s – and immensely popular Ginebra
playing-coach – in the ‘80s and ‘90s – has been invited to grace the
curtain-raiser.
Jaworski, along with Alberto ‘Big Boy’ Reynoso, Jimmy Mariano, Gene
Lucindo, Orly Bauzon, Alfronso Marquez, Larry Mumar and a young
Francis Arnaiz, among others, stood in the forefront of the Meralco
Reddie Kilowatts’ bitter rivalry with the Crispa Redmanizers, a feud
the spilled over to the PBA after its formation in 1975, Meralco’s
eventual disbandment, and Toyota acquiring Jaworski and Co.
When Toyota folded early in the ‘80s, Jaworski and Arnaiz went to
Gilbey’s Gin, the forerunner of the Barangay Ginebra Kings, giving the
PBA its biggest attraction since Crispa-Toyota and Robert Non and
Ramon Segismundo, many years later, their merry bone of contention.(pr)

Nokia RP U-18 loses to hosts
SANA’A, Yemen--The Nokia RP U-18 team dropped its second straight game
anew as it bowed to host Yemen, 76-69, on Saturday in the 21st FIBA
Asia U18 Championship at the 22nd May Arena here.
Following a 75-83 setback to China, the Filipinos, backed by Nokia
Philippines and TAO Corporation, came out flat although they were only
down by six at the half at 33-39.
“We came out rather flat. We made a fight out of it, but we were
really flat,” said head coach Eric Altamirano, whose team is battling
Japan at 2 pm (Manila time) to improve on its quarterfinals chances.
Gelo Alolino scored 19 points while Gwyne Capacio had 16 for the
Philippines, which now totes a 1-2 record in the round. Sabri Sadakh
was the leader of the hosts’ cause with a game-high 21 points.
Qualifying teams in the second round carry over only preliminary wins
against fellow qualifiers from their same group. Only Philippines’
61-60 win over Syria was carried over to the second round as Saudi
Arabia (which the Philippines defeated, 86-68)) dropped to the
classification round while the Filipinos lost to China all in Group C
in the opening round.
Now in the second round Group F, the Philippines is lagging behind
China (3-0), Japan (3-0) and Yemen (2-1). But they are better off than
Iraq (0-3) and Syria (0-3) and are still in the running for a
quarterfinals seat. Top four teams in this round join top four teams
in the Group E in the knock-out quarterfinals.

BACLAO, HUSSAINI READY TO RUMBLE
Air21 coach Yeng Guiao is convinced their celebrated top draft picks
would make an impact right in their rookie year and help the team hit
big strides in the coming 36th PBA season.
Guiao said Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra have been
doing so well in practice, raising the energy and confidence of the
team.
The veteran Air21 bench tactician brims with confidence the Express
would give the other teams a run for their money with Baclao,
Al-Hussaini and Guevarra playing key roles right in their rookie year
in the pros.
“Based on what I see in practice, these guys will play like veterans
not as rookies,” said Guiao.
“I intend to give them the minutes and I don’t think our veterans
would be offended. I believe they would accept the reality that we
need help from these young guys,” Guiao added.
Guiao expects Al-Hussaini to establish himself as among the league’s
top big men, Baclao to carve his niche as a do-it-all forward and
Guevarra to boost their offensive power from the wing.
“Al-Hussaini really plays like a veteran and I haven’t seen the
negative things said of him. Sabi nila matigas ang ulo, uncoachable,
masama ugali. So far, wala naman syang pinapakita na ganon,” said
Guiao.
“Nonoy is the epitome of a role player. Not high profile but he would
do the dirty work. He’s not a big time scorer but will score when
needed. He’s on the ball every time,” said Guiao of the top draft
pick.
“Guevarra is athletic. He’s superior physically at No. 2 spot. He has
the height to play the No. 3 position. Kulang lang sa yabang. Mahiyain
at kailangan i-develop ang confidence,” said Guiao of their third
draft selection.
With these three players complementing the Air21 veterans, Guiao is
optimistic they can improve on their ninth place finish in last year’s

Bogs Adornado lends name to Phoenix Fuel-Comeback Player Award
IN 1981, William ‘Bogs’ Adornado came back from a career-threatening
knee injury and won his third Philippine Basketball Association Most
Valuable Player award while playing for the U-Tex Wranglers.
On Sept. 29, the Philippine Basketball Association Press Corps fetes a
player who made an astounding comeback and created a huge impact with
his performance in the season just passed. The 2009-2010 Comeback
Player of the Year, presented by Phoenix Petroleum, will be awarded of
the William ‘Bogs’ Adornado Trophy in honor of the PBA’s multi-titled
player and Hall of Famer, who generously agreed to lend his fabled
name for the award.
The name of Adornado being mentioned in the same breath with the
Comeback Player of the Year award was a fitting tribute to the player
who became the first to win the PBA MVP award three times.
The Coach of the Year and the Executive of the Year awards were also
named after the two people who were responsible in shaping up his
illustrious playing career – ‘The Maestro’ Baby Dalupan and Danny
Floro, his coach and manager, respectively, from the fabled Crispa
Redmanizers.
“It’s such a big honor to have the Comeback Player Award named after
me,” said Adornado, who overcame open surgery and a long and painful
recuperation period to set history. “It’s nice to be remembered this
way.”
Adornado, who became the first player to score 2,000 points which he
recorded during the finals of the 1976 All-Filipino, suffered a knee
injury in the Open Conference of that same season and was sidelined
for nearly two years.
While on his way to recovery, the former member of the RP team in the
1973 ABC champion squad, played a pivotal role for the Redmanizers’
title-clinching win in Game 4 of the best-of-five finals over Toyota
in the 1979 All-Filipino.
He continued his remarkable comeback the following season, this time,
with the U-Tex Wranglers, whom he led to the 1980 Open Conference
crown over the Toyota Tamaraws. During the deciding game of the
series, Adornado was instrumental for the Wranglers, who fought back
from four points down in the final 16 seconds of regulation to force
overtime and won in a game regarded as one of the best ever played in
the annals of the PBA.
“Naming the Comeback Player Award after Bogs Adornado is very apt,”
said former PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios. “Bogs, after being
sidelined with what was thought as a career-ending knee injury, came
back with a bang by again winning an MVP award – his third!”
“The award is a very meaningful one as it recognizes PBA players
making the extra effort to elevate their standard of performance,”
said PBA chairman Rene Pardo of B-Meg Derby Ace. “It exemplifies the
well known Filipino trait of picking one’s self after being down, and
trying harder. No finer model for this award than Bogs Adornado.”
Last season, Mike Cortez, then playing for San Miguel Beer, was feted
of Comeback Player of the Year award after playing a stellar role in
the Beermen’s 4-3 victory over sister team Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings
in their best-of-seven series.
Cortez played a pivotal role in the Beermen’s gut-wrenching win over
the Gin Kings and emerged as second in the Finals MVP derby won by
teammate Jonas Villanueva.
Other past winners of the Comeback Player of the Year were Mike Hrabak
(2008), Gary David (2007), Danny Seigle (2006), Jayjay Helterbrand
(2004), Bong Ravena (2003), Ronnie Magsanoc (2002), Ato Agustin

Nokia RP U-18 loses to China by 8
SANA’A, Yemen—The Nokia RP team kept up with the China for most of the
game, but ended at the shorter end of the score with an 75-83 setback
in Group C of the Fiba Asia U-18 Championships at the 22nd May courts
here on Friday.
Despite the loss, the Filipinos, backed by Nokia Philippines and TAO
Corporation, entered the second round where it is now grouped with
Japan, Yemen, Syria and Iraq. They will battle Yemen at 7 pm on
Saturday (1 am, Manila time).
Noticed mainly for their tough defense, the Philippine team had to
grapple in the fourth quarter with China’s big men, mostly seven
footers as they were outrebounded, 41-29.
“We were able to keep up with them but our big guys got into foul
trouble. We lost but I really feel that the boys played like real
men,”said Nokia RP U-18 coach Eric Altamirano.
Chinese coach Fan Bin also lauded the Philippines’ tough stance.“They
(Philippines) have improved a lot,” said Fan as he recalled their
match in the FIBA Asia U16 Championship last year when they won the
game with an 85-66 score. In Friday’s match, Zhu Xuhang led the
scoring for the game with 20 points, and eight rebounds while
much-heralded Guo Ailun poured in 19 points.
Raphael Banal led the Philippines with 19 points while Kiefer Ravena
and Russel Escoto had 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Filipinos shot only 37 percent from the field at 39 percent (26 of
67 attempts) but cashed in from the freethrow line with a 65 percent
clip (15 of 23). They had more field goal attempts than China’s 31 of
59 for a 53 percent shooting.

SALUD SUMMONS CONE FOR 'CRITICAL' REMARKS
PBA commissioner Chito Salud met with Alaska Aces head coach Tim Cone
yesterday regarding statements attributed to the latter criticizing
the three-conference format, import handicapping and one-sided trades,
among others.
No sanctions were meted out, but Salud cautioned Cone from coming out
with similar statements in the future.
“While we acknowledge that the statements were well-intentioned and
that there was no malice on the part of coach Tim, we reminded him to
be more cautious in making statements to the media that tend to be
harmful to the league,” said Salud.
The new commissioner added that he welcomed spirited debates on any
league matter, but he likewise pointed out that the season format,
which will revert back to the three-conference schedule, and the
import handicapping scheme were already approved by the Board.
“It would have been proper had he raised his points before the
measures were approved by the Board,” Salud said.
The meeting, which lasted an hour and a half, allowed Salud and Cone
to discuss several league matters, among them free agency and the
salary cap. The former thanked the champion Alaska mentor for his
valuable inputs, which will be taken and considered as the
Commissioner’s Office takes a closer look at the current policies and
programs in place.(pr)

PSC COMMISH CHITO LOYZAGA IS GUEST OF HONOR AT PBAPC AWARDS
The Philippine Sports Commission’s Chito Loyzaga has been invited as
guest of honor in the Philippine Basketball Association Press Corps
(PBAPC) Awards set Sept. 29 at the Sapphire Room of the Gateway Mall
in Cubao, Quezon City.
The 52-year-old Loyzaga, who played in four PBA teams in the 80s until
early 90s, including crowd-favorite Barangay Ginebra, became the first
ex-PBA player to be appointed as commissioner in the PSC, the
government arm in sports development.
Prior to his involvement to the PSC, Loyzaga – the original “Dynamite”
in the PBA – served as official of several teams of San Miguel Corp.,
and a basketball ambassador of the company’s team of former SMC
players that holds exhibition games in various places in the country.
The annual awards will be hosted by veteran sportscasters Quinito
Henson, Ed Picson and Patricia Bermundez-Hizon. The event, which will
honor PBA personalities who excelled during the 35th PBA Season, will
start at 7:30 p.m.
The event’s major sponsors are Smart Sports, Alaska Milk and SMC, with
support from the PBA, Solar Sports, Accel Sports Wear, Coca-Cola and
the Araneta Center.
The PBA sportswriter will give plaques for the Virgilio ‘Baby’ Dalupan
Coach of the Year trophy, the Danny Floro Executive of the Year,
Defensive Player, Comeback Player, Mr. Quality Minutes, All-Rookie
Team and Referee of the Year.
Two recipients of the Raffy Japa Presidential Award will share the
spotlight with the winners, while a short audio-visual presentation
for the late Willie Caballes, the Manila Bulletin assistant sports
editor and former PBAPC president who passed away last April, is in
the program.
Last year, after Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng wiped out two scheduled
affairs, the Awards was finally held at the PBA office in Libis,
Quezon City with Chot Reyes of Talk ‘N Text getting the Baby Dalupan
trophy and San Miguel Corporation chief executive former Amb. Eduardo
‘Danding’ Cojuangco chosen Executive of the Year.
Ginebra executive Henry Cojuangco, now a Tarlac congressman, accepted
the award for his elder brother.
Others feted were Wynne Arboleda, Jason Castro, Mike Cortez, Arwind
Santos, Jimmy Alapag, Gabe Norwood, Jared Dillinger, Sol Mercado,
Bonbon Custodio, Larry Rodriguez and Throngy Aldaba.
Santos, winner of the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2008,
ended up tied with Alapag as Order of Merit winners in PBAPC's Player
of the Week program.
They won the Player of the Week honors thrice each and, thus, shared the trophy.
Arboleda was the Best Defensive Player for the second time in the last
three years, Castro was Mr. Quality Minutes, Cortez was the Comeback
Player of the Year and Aldaba the Referee of the Year. Norwood,
Dillinger, Mercado, Custodio and Rodriguez comprised the All-Rookie

ASIA, WILLIAMS TO PLAY IN ASIAD
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Board finally
granted the request of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to
tap two of its star players for the RP-Smart Gilas team, paving the
way for Asi Taulava and Kelly Williams’ stint to the Asian Games in
Guangzhou, China this November.
The league’s Board of Governors under chairman Rene Pardo
unanimously approved the appeal of the country’s governing body for
basketball during the first day of its planning session in this lively
capital city of Thailand.
“The PBA Board has acceded to the request of the Samahang
Basketbol ng Pilipinas to help in the quest of our national team to
the Asian Games,” announced commissioner Chito Salud at the end of the
Board’s initial meeting that lasted close to six hours.
A third player in James Yap however, begged off from suiting up
for the national team, citing personal reasons and the recent surgery
performed on him to remove a polyp on his nose.
“James has personally begged off to play dahil dun sa mga
dinadanas niya ngayon,” said Pardo of B-Meg’s main man.
With Yap out of the national squad, the league said it’s up to
the SBP to fill up the slot left by the 6-foot-2 gunner out of
University of the East.
Patrick Gregorio, Board representative of Talk `N Text, which
also sponsors the national team, said coach Rajko Toroman will be the
one to decide which player is going to take the place of Yap.
Toroman and the rest of the nationals are currently in China
competing in the 4th Asian Basketball Association Club Championship.
Both Salud and Pardo also stressed they plan to sit down with
SBP officials, led by president Manny V. Pangilinan, to identify the
specific role the PBA will have to play in the overall program of the
basketball body.
The league used to be in the forefront of forming and training
the national team to elite competitions such as the Asian Games and
FIBA-Asia men’s basketball tournament, but then slowly faded away from
it the moment the RP-Smart Gilas team was put into place.
At the same time, Salud made it clear that Chot Reyes’ stint as
special assistant to Toroman is only until the duration of the
Guangzhou Asiad.
Also approved by the Board was the improvised rules on
officiating Salud and his technical group made for application in the
coming 36th season.
The new commissioner said he is ready for any criticisms that
may arise out of the set up, stressing that it `comes with the
territory.’
But he said he’s confident that it `will work out not
immediately, but sooner.”
Other agenda tackled and subsequently given the imprimatur by
the Board were the employment of a 14-man lineup for each team and the
right to field in all 14 players during the game, and a 6-4 height
limit to imports seeing action in the second conference and the
application of a handicap import system in the season-ending
tournament.
Aside from Pardo, elected as other officers of the Board were
Mamerto Mondragon (Rain or Shine) as vice chairman and JB Baylon
(Powerade) as treasurer.
Other Board members present during the two-day planning
session were former chairmen Joaqui Trillo (Alaska) and Ely Capacio
(San Miguel), Robert Non (Ginebra), Gregorio, Ramon Segismundo
(Meralco), Johan Ramos (Air21), Manny Mendoza (Barako Bull) and
one-time chairman Buddy Encarnado.(pr)

PBA CONDOLES WITH HONG KONG PEOPLE
The Philippine Basketball Association has decided to cancel its 3-day planning session scheduled in Hong Kong on September 1 to 3.
After observing the developments in the on-going investigation by the Philippine authorities of the hostage-taking incident and wishing to express its sympathy and unity with the family and friends of the hostage victims, along with the people of Hong Kong, the PBA has thought it wise and prudent to hold its annual planning session in a local venue instead.
“We don’t want to give the impression to our Hong Kong neighbors that we are insensitive to their grief. We also want our authorities to conclude their investigation to address the concerns and sentiments of the Hong Kong people,” Chairman of the Board of Governors Rene Pardo said.
Atty. Chito Salud, PBA Deputy Commissioner, for his part added, “the Board had this Hong Kong planning trip long scheduled in its calendar. When the hostage-taking incident occurred, the Governors were understandably alarmed and closely followed the developments here and in Hong Kong. Sentiments of grief and frustration are still running high on all sides. They thought it best and prudent to show solidarity and sympathy with our Hong Kong brothers and sisters at this time.”
Among those to be tackled in the planning session are matters pertaining to the three-conference season format, the planned D-League and the request of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas for some PBA players to join the national team to the Asian Games in Guang Zhou in November.(pr)
