HONG KONG – One banner season deserves another.
The considerable gains attained by the Philippine
Basketball Association (PBA) last year has made new chairman Mamerto
Mondragon of Rain or Shine optimistic about the new playing calendar
of the league set to kick off on Oct. 2 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Part of that optimism is matching, or even surpassing
the P90 million gross receipt posted by the league under Mondragon’s
predecessor, Rene Pardo of B-Meg.
“It’s attainable,” said Mondragon, who has been
associated with the Rain or Shine franchise for a long time now.
The soft-spoken league official said the backing of
the rest of the Board and commissioner Chito Salud makes the objective
realistic enough.
“I’m still feeling my way around,”Mondragon said.
“Medyo nangangapa pa. Anyway, andiyan pa rin yung mga Governors, so
they are there to assist me”
Pardo assured his successor of the Board’s all-out
support to the chairmanship of Mondragon, the way he was backed during
this term.
“I’m sure Atty. Mondragon is very able. And he will have the 100
percent support of everybody,” said the former PBA chairman.
The entry of a new coveror in TV5, the retention of the three
conference format, and the significant increase in attendance are some
of the factors Mondragon cited that could help the league sustain the
success achieved last year.
The entry of rookie players, especially those coming
from the Smart Gilas-Pilipinas team, is expected to give a breath of
fresh air to the league, according to the chairman, whose team
acquired streak-shooting guard Paul Lee of University of the East with
the no. 2 overall pick in the recent Rookie Draft.
The unlimited height ceiling for imports in the second
conference as approved by the Board during its annual planning session
here, could also add new spice to the season, Mondragon added.
“With some improvements, we strongly believe we have
another winner this coming season,” said the chairman.
And then there’s TV5, which sealed a deal to be the
official coveror of the PBA for the next five years.
“We (TV5) trust them, and nangako naman sila that they
will definitely try to make a difference,” the chairman pointed

PBA HOLDS LEO AWARDS TOMORROW
The Philippine Basketball Association will honor the cream of the crop of the 2009-2010 season during its annual Leo Awards on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Highlight of the event set at 5:15 p.m. is the much-awaited announcement of this year’s Most Valuable Player awardee.
The program precedes the Game 3 of the best-of-seven PBA Fiesta Conference championship series between defending champion San Miguel Beer and Alaska.
The coveted trophy is bestowed to the player who made an impact throughout the season.
Candidates for the league’s highest individual accolade are Kelly Williams and Mark Cardona of Talk N’ Text, Arwind Santos and Jay Washington of San Miguel Beer, James Yap of B-Meg Derby Ace, Coke’s Asi Taulava, Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine and Alaska’s L.A. Tenorio.
During the occasion, the league will also pay tribute on the accomplishments of out-going chairman Lito Alvarez, now the Customs commissioner, who will be presented with a special award by PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios, deputy commissioner Chito Salud and the entire membership of the PBA Board of Governors.
Almost as significant as the MVP trophy is the Rookie of the Year hardware that is a toss-up among B-Meg’s Rico Maierhofer, Sta. Lucia’s Josh Urbiztondo and Chris Ross, Rain or Shine’s Jervy Cruz and Ronnie Matias of Air 21.
During the brief awarding rites the league will also give due recognition to the first and second Mythical Selections, the season’s Most Improved Player and the All-Defensive Team.
Entertainment will be supplied by the all-girl group Eurasia and Mocha.(pr)

Salud to grace Foundation Week
Luminaries from the birth year of the Philippine Basketball
Association will continue to cast their glitter as the league’s 35th
Foundation Week celebration comes to a climactic end Sunday at the
Araneta Coliseum.
Former PBA commissioner Rodrigo ‘Rudy’ Salud, the brilliant
lawyer-sportsman who served as legal counsel to founding PBA
commissioner Leo Prieto in 1975 after nine ballclubs banded to form
Asia’s first professional basketball league, will grace the affair
along with members of the Toyota and U-Tex teams.
The man who sat at the helm of the PBA during its golden years from
1988 to 1991 is expected to be joined by Commissioner Sonny Barrios
and other league officials in welcoming invited pioneers led by Robert
Jaworski, Ramon Fernandez, Francis Arnaiz, and Ompong from Toyota, and
Danny Basilan, Egay Gomez, and Roy Deles from U-Tex, two of the four
teams which played a double-header on opening day on April 9.
The PBA awaits confirmation of some of the players’ presence,
including Fernandez, but legendary Crispa Redmanizer hotshot Fortunato
Co, who played in the PBA's maiden season, has sent word of his
arrival.
Also invited is William ‘Bogs’ Adornado, the league’s first MVP awardee.
Barrios, along with former commissioner Jun Bernardino and legal
counsel Butch Cleofe, both of whom have passed away, has said often
that Salud has been their “mentor” in the PBA and “big brother” on a
personal level.
“Early on in my career, he impressed upon me the need for the
commissioner to make decisions with competence, objectivity, and a
high sense of fairness based on the PBA constitution and by-laws and
playing rules,” said Barrios, named the seventh commissioner two years
ago.
“You can't go wrong, Sonny, if you approach issues that way,” Barrios
recalled being told by Salud, who immortalized the line “the interest
of the PBA fan is paramount.”
The one responsible for crafting not only the charter of the PBA but
also that of the World Boxing Council, Salud also pointed out, Barrios
said, that “I should be prepared, when necessary, to have the resolve
to be firm on decisions as Commissioner, especially on controversial
issues, as not all decisions by the Commissioner are popular.”
“He is a pillar of the PBA,” Barrios added. “The PBA is indeed
fortunate to have Comm. Rudy Salud as an integral part of its
foundation and formative years.”

PBA FIRST WEEK SKED
BURGER King and Purefoods get the honor of ushering the 35th season of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) as they tangle in the lone opening game of the Philippine Cup on October 11 at the Araneta Coliseum.
The two teams take to the floor at 6:30 p.m., shortly after the traditional colorful opening rites, highlighted by a simple tribute to the late league chairman Tony Chua of Barako Bull.
The Whoppers will go into the game without star forward Arwind Santos, whom they traded to San Miguel, but get to parade new acquisitions Ronjay Buenafe and Chico Lanete.
With top overall pick Japeth Aguilar still refusing to sign with Burger King, the game is bereft of the match-up between two of the year’s top rookie selection as no. 2 Rico Maierhofer suits up for Purefoods for the first time.
Along with the lanky, 6-foot-6 center out of De La Salle, Rafi Reavis is the other newcomer in the Giants roster along with returnee Marc Pingris.
Four more teams make their respective debuts on the next playdate (Oct. 14).
Alaska, last year’s season-opening runner-up, takes on Barako Bull in the 5 p.m. curtain raiser, before defending Fiesta Cup champion San Miguel battles Barangay Ginebra in a rematch of last year’s Finals.
Along with fellow off-season recruit Denok Miranda, Santos sees action for the Beermen for the first time this season. The 7:30 p.m. encounter also marks the possible return from active roster of Kings’ main man Mark Caguioa and new teammates Enrico Villanueva, Rich Alvarez, Paolo Bugia and Celino Cruz.
A triple header meanwhile, is in store for basketball fans on Oct. 16 (Friday) at the Astrodome as the RP-Smart Gilas team of Serbian coach Rajko Toroman makes its first appearance in Asia’s first ever pro league opposite the Whoppers of Powerade-Team Pilipinas mentor Yeng Guiao at 2:30 p.m.
Shortly after the potentially explosive duel between the Nationals and the Whoppers, comes the Coca-Cola-Sta. Lucia Realty meeting at 5 p.m. that will see the pro debut of no. 3 pick Chris Ross for the Tigers, before Talk `N Text begins its Philippine Cup title defense at the expense of Rain or Shine in the 7:30 p.m. main game.
The conference’s first out of town game in Davao City caps the first week of the new season as the Beermen clash with the Aces at 5 p.m.

Tongco leads Caloocan-Batang Alaska to victory
Ranbil Tongco came away with 27 points as Caloocan-Batang Alaska Aces held off Antipolo-Batang Barangay Ginebra Kings, 62-56, yesterday at the start of the Burlington-Jr. PBA Summer League at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Jr. Aces practically rode on the heroics of Tongco, who scored all but three of his team's 19 points in the opening quarter then came back in the fourth to save Caloocan from the brink of defeat.
Antipolo trailed by seven points after one quarter but the Jr. Kings seized momentum in the next 12 minutes by outscoring the Jr. Aces, 21-9, to take a 33-28 lead at the half.
Rafael de Leon sparked that run by scattering 11 points and went on to show the way for the Antipolo with17 points.
Antipolo's set of five in the third quarter couldn't keep up the pace and Caloocan capitalized on it with Ivan Lazaro leading the attack with 12 points as the Jr. Aces ended the third quarter up by six.
The game stayed close in the fourth but the Jr. Kings couldn't get closer than 48-50 on a basket by De Leon with three minutes remaining.
Tongco scored on a drive in the next play then fed Miguel Luis Gomez underneath the basket as Caloocan seal the outcome with under two minutes left.
