Player of the Week: Larry Fonacier

ONCE in a while, a player comes up with a career game. And when that comes at a
time when his team needs it the most, the feat becomes extra special.
Such was the case with Larry Fonacier, who re-set some personal milestones while
helping Talk N Text draw closer to an immediate goal in the PBA Governors Cup.
The reserve guard earned the Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week honors for
the period June 20 to 26 when he made a career-high 27 points in powering the
Tropang Texters to an 89-85 squeaker over Powerade last Saturday at the Davao
del Sur Cultural, Sports and Business Center.
The performance, anchored on a remarkable 8-of-11 three-point shooting, enabled
Talk N Text to overcome an error-filled night, preserve its unblemished start in
the season-ending tourney and help boost its confidence in its chase for a
season-sweep.

“”He bailed us out,” said Texters coach Chot Reyes of the 2005-06 Rookie of the
Year who came into the game averaging 8.0 ppg but on that particular night
finished with a 9-of-13 field shooting laced with four rebounds and two assists.

“We had 25 turnovers and Powerade did a good job of taking away our
penetration,” Reyes added. “Larry’s outside shooting was our counter.”
It was the most number of treys the league has seen since Ronjay Buenafe, then
with Air21, had the same output in the season-opening Philippine Cup.
This one becomes more memorable since Fonacier’s final triple shattered the
game’s last deadlock at 85 in the last 18 seconds and pointed Talk N Text to its
third win.
That performance made the scribes give the former Ateneo stalwart the nod over
Alaska’s Sonny Thoss, who posted two-game averages of 17.5 points, 10.5
rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks in the Aces’ wins over B-MEG and Air21.PR

Cebu wallops host MP Warriors, 76-65

GENERAL SANTOS City – Cebu Landmasters RDAK-Mandaue grabbed its third weekly championship by walloping the host MP Warriors of GenSan, 76-65, at the close of the General Santos City Leg of the SMC Liga PilipinasConference V at the GMP Sports Complex Saturday night.  More importantly, the team of Joe Soberano and Rick King is already assured of topping the overall standings with one more pocket tournament to be played next week in Cagayan de Oro City.

Guard Ariel Capus put up a scorching shooting display in the fourth period as Mandaue turned the once-tight game wide open via his three triples and near-flawless shooting clip.  Mark Magsumbol and Marlon Basco also provided timely baskets that kept the MP Warriors in check.

Capus finished with 27 points on 11 of 14 shooting plus eight rebounds.  Magsumbol supported him with 14 and Basco with 12.  Louie Medalla paced the Warriors with 13 markers followed by Jonathan Parreno with nine.

For his good play when it mattered most, Capus was named as the week’s Most Valuable Player.  The former Jose Rizal University Bomber dedicated the award to his family, calling them his inspiration to do his best all the time.

Mandaue coach Jun Tan also became the sixth coach in Liga history to garner three or more weekly titles.  The list includes Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, Jun Noel, Nomar Isla, Oliver Bunyi and Bing Victoria.

Meanwhile, the Ilocos Sur CS Tigers of Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson and Coach Johnedel Cardel ended their sojourn on a positive note by copping Third Place at the expense of the Laguna Golden Lions of Gov. ER Ejercito and CoachPhilip Cezar, 82-79.

The CS Tigers picked up three points and finished the Tour Phase with a total of 15, a point better than the MP Warriors.  However, the Warriors will still see action this week thus putting the Tigers’ hopes in jeopardy.  The Golden Lions are secured for the Super Leg with 19 points, good for Third Place in the current overall standings.

Ariel de Castro led the Tigers with 18 points and Chito Jaime added 11 as the duo made a living off the 11 assists of Warren Ybanez.  Glenn Bolocon set a new conference standard of 30 points and EJ Feihl played his best game yet with 14 points and eight rebounds but their efforts went to naught.

The Misamis Oriental Meteors and Gov. Oscar S. Moreno will host the sixth and final leg starting Wednesday at the Xavier University Gym as they tangle with Mandaue, GenSan and the defending National Champion M. LhuillierKwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos.  Liga Pilipinas is generously supported by San Miguel, Molten, Summit Natural Drinking Water and Accel.

Players of the Week: Jason Castro, Arwind Santos

PICKING up the cudgels for sidelined teammates has netted Talk N Text’s Jason
Castro and Petron Blaze’s Arwind Santos some good results.
The two play different positions but similarly shone brightest for their hobbled
teams in the PBA Governors Cup, earning for them the Accel-PBA Press Corps’
Co-Players of the Week honors for the period June 13 to 19.
Castro made the Tropang Texters hardly miss the services of ace playmaker Jimmy
Alapag as he came off the bench twice to average 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and
5.5 assists in leading them to a 2-0 start in the tournament they aim to top to
realize a rare Grand Slam.
“With Jimmy out we were looking at him to provide leadership and he has been
delivering,” said Talk N Text coach Chot Reyes of his combo guard.
Petron was worse off with more key players absent. But Santos rose to the
occasion by norming 14.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 1.0 steals in
helping the Boosters notch back-to-back wins after opening up their campaign on
a sour note.
“Isa siya talaga sa pinaka inaasahan ng team at I’m glad he’s been rising up to
the challenge,” said Petron coach Ato Agustin of the 6-foot-4 shooting forward
transplanted to the 4 slot by necessity.
Alapag suffered a sprain just four minutes into the second half and was
sidelined from thereon in their opening game against Alaska last Wednesday.
There was really no cause for immediate concern as Castro took over and scored
seven of his 11 points in the fourth period, ensuring the Texters complete their
101-75 rout.
The 5-10 spitfire was more fiery their next time out as he churned out 22
points, eight rebounds, as many assists and also had a steal and a block in a
120-108 win over erstwhile unbeaten Rain or Shine that put the Texters alongside
idle Meralco for the lead.
Injuries to his teammates also admittedly spurred Santos as he readily picked up
the cudgels for sidelined fellow frontliners Jay Washington (left foot), Danny
Ildefonso (knee) and Nonoy Baclao (knee), as well as point guard Denok Miranda
(foot).
With Washington suffering his injury just seven minutes into the game against
Air21 last Friday, Santos took it upon himself to work doubly harder in tending
the boards. Result was a career-high 21 rebounds, going well with his 15 points
and five blocks in Petron’s breakthrough 115-106 win.
He followed that up with 13 points, six rebounds, two steals, as many blocks and
an assist in the Boosters’ follow-up 100-89 victory over sister team Barangay
Ginebra last Sunday.PR

Pacquiao Warriors vs. Cebu Landmaster RDAK-Mandaue on Tuesday

POINTS STANDINGS (Win-Loss)
Cebu Landmasters RDAK-Mandaue (7-1) 27 points
M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos (7-5) 24
Misamis Oriental Meteors (6-6) 18
Laguna Golden Lions (5-7) 17
Ilocos Sur CS Tigers (4-8) 11
MP Warriors of GenSan (3-5) 7

GENERAL SANTOS City – Rep. Manny Pacquiao’s MP Warriors of GenSan will play their first official games at the spanking new GMP Sports Complex with the opening of the General Santos City Leg of the SMC Liga PilipinasConference V on Tuesday.

The Warriors under Coach Arvin Bonleon will be tested by no less than Cebu Landmaster RDAK-Mandaue, which recently became the first team to bag a second weekly championship this conference, as well as the Laguna Golden Lions and Ilocos Sur CS Tigers.

While Mandaue is currently lording it over the six-team field, focus will be on the battle between the Warriors, Lions and Tigers as the three teams dispute the last two spots in next month’s Super Leg that will determine the next Liga Pilipinas National Champion.  Only five teams of the six teams will advance to the Super Leg that is supported by San Miguel, Molten, Summit Natural Drinking Water and Accel.

The Warriors will again draw firepower from forward Alfie Grijaldo and guard Louie Medalla, Liga’s third and fourth best scorers with 14.6 and 14.1 respectively.  It is no surprise that the Warriors are also Liga’s top scoring team at 81.3 per game.

On the other hand, Mandaue is winning thanks to its stingy defense engineered by Coach Jun Tan, a Liga-best 61.1.  Two-time weekly Most Valuable Player Mark Magsumbol will again lead the team of Joe Soberano and Rick King, along with backcourt mate Axel Doruelo and center Marlon Basco.

This being their fourth and final weekly assignments, the Golden Lions of Gov. ER Ejercito and the CS Tigers of Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson are expected to go all out and fortify their grip on a Super Leg berth and create distance between them and the Warriors.

The Golden Lions have won five of their last eight games since basketball legend Philip Cezar took over the coaching reins.  Coach Cezar brought in an improved defense, coupled by the rise in scoring from Glenn Bolocon (15.6 PPG) and Bryan Faundo (11.4 PPG).

Finally, the CS Tigers are looking for more help for team leader Chito Jaime, their only twin-digit scorer at 13.3.  Coach Johnedel Cardel has to extract more consistency from the likes of Ramsey Williams, Jorel Canizares and Warren Ybanez.  After winning their first two games of the conference, the slumping CS Tigers has since won only twice in its next ten outings.

In three previous legs held at the cavernous General Santos City Coliseum in Barangay Lagao, the Warriors could only account for a pair of Third Place trophies in Conference II and the Tournament of the Philippines.  Playing at the new venue could just be the boost they need.  GMP is owned and operated by Rep. Pacquiao and is located in Barangay Tambler near the airport.

Liga Pilipinas concludes its Tour Phase next week in Cagayan de Oro City with the Misamis Oriental Meteors hosting Mandaue, the Warriors and defending National Champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos in all-Southern showdown.PR

NLEX vs. C.Lhuillier, a dream match-up

The final act of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup between the NLEX Road
Warriors and the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems is a dream match-up.

It features two teams whose bench are the envy of many and players
with remarkable skills and talents.

The Gems secured their spot in the series by dispatching the PC
Gilmore Wizards, 83-55, in a lopsided semi-final match-up last
Thursday.

The Road Warriors were just as powerful in their 74-61 victory against
the Max! Bond Super Glue Sumos.

Coaches of both teams readily declare this will be great series as the
two teams battle for the first championship trophy of the fledgling
league.

Game 1 of the best-of-three series is scheduled at 3 p.m. at The Arena
in San Juan.

The Road Warriors and the Gems have lots in common that makes this
series a certified “must-see”.

They are both hard workers and fierce competitors. They are defense
oriented and love to play physical.

Luigi Trillo, coach of Cebuana Lhuillier, called their Finals
appearance a humbling experience. “But there’s still a job to be done.
We can’t underachieve and be happy by just making the Finals.”

He said the Road Warrior are very athletic. “But I think we can match
up with them. They have their strengths and we have ours. It will be
great series,” Trillo declared.

NLEX coach Boyet Fernadez is just as ecstatic about their final act.
He said this is what they have prepared for over the last four months.

“The team is in high spirits. Three-fourths of our job is done. Were
confident that we can match up with them well,” Fernandez said.

Because it’s a short series, Fernandez said winning Game 1 is crucial.

“It’s very important in a series like this. Whoever plays defense well
and makes stops in the end will win the series,” he said. (PR)

Hosts becomes 1st team to win 2nd weekly leg crown

MANDAUE CITY – Hosts Cebu Landmasters RDAK-Mandaue became the first team to win a second weekly leg championship at the SMC Liga Pilipinas Conference V Saturday by edging the Misamis Oriental Meteors, 84-80, at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

Trailing by three entering the final period, 53-56, Mandaue leaned on a six-point explosion by Jan Villaver to grab the upper hand for good, 59-56. Villaver was not finished as he added five more and Mark Magsumbol shot steadily from the free throw stripe to erect Mandaue's biggest lead, 74-67.

With no less than team owner Gov. Oscar S. Moreno in attendance, the Meteors clawed back behind Egay Billones whose four points put them at their closest, 73-76, and 1:35 to play. However, Mandaue quicky countered with a Leo Losentes triple, 79-73.

Villaver gave the home fans anxious moments as he missed two free throws at the 17-second mark, which was followed by a Neil Raneses triple that allowed the Meteors to threaten for the last time, 80-83. Magsumbol fittingly placed a cap on the win with a free throw with four ticks on the clock that made it a two-possession game, 84-80.

Magsumbol and Villaver shared scoring honors for the champions of Joe Soberano and Rick King with 16 points each. Billones topped the Meteors of Coach Jun Noel with 17 followed by Ken Bono and Lyndon Gudez with 13 apiece.

For the second time, Magsumbol was named as the week's Most Valuable Player after leading the team with an average of 14.0 points. “We are happy that we were able to defend our home court considering this is probably the toughest leg this conference,” said Coach Tan.

Meanwhile, the Laguna Golden Lions of Gov. ER Ejercito and Coach Philip Cezar ended their trip on a positive note by mangling the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos in the battle for Third Place, 68-56. This marks the first time in Liga history that the three-time National Champion Ninos of Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba finished in last place in a weekly leg.

Bryan Faundo dominated the M. Lhuillier bigs with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Cebuanos Glenn Bolocon and Earn Saguindel also played well for the Lions with a combined 24 markers. Nat Cruz and Bruce Dacia paced the Ninos with 13 points each.

Because of their victory, Mandaue vaulted to the top of the overall points standings with 27 points. The Ninos dropped to second with 24 points followed by the Meteors with 18 and the Golden Lions with 17. The Ilocos Sur CS Tigers and MP Warriors of GenSan occupy the last two spots with 11 and seven respectively.

Liga Pilipinas action takes a break this week and resumes on June 22 with the MP Warriors being visited by Mandaue, Golden Lions and CS Tigers. The games of Liga Pilipinas are made possible by San Miguel, Molten, Summit Natural Drinking Water and Accel.

Leading throughout the entire ballgame, the Meteors of Gov. Oscar S.      Egay Billones led the Meteors with 12 points and six rebounds in the low-scoring contest.  Allan Salangsang followed with nine points.  Mandaue, which won its first five outings, was paced by Mark Magsumbol with 15 markers while Marlon Basco chipped in 13 on top of six rebounds.

Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba after they
controlled majority of the contest made possible by San Miguel,
Molten, Summit Natural Drinking Water and Accel.

Cebuana Lhuillier topples PC Gilmore, 83-55

Games on Tuesday
(The Arena)
3 p.m. – Cebuana Lhuillier vs NLEX

Cebuana Lhuillier got significant contributions from just about
everybody and toppled the overmatched PC Gilmore Wizards, 83-55, in
their knockout semi-final duel Thursday that sent the Gems into the
championship series of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares
Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Gems got their game going early and pulled away in the third
quarter as Kevin Alas and James Sena took over the scoring and
frustrated their rivals.

Narciso Llagas was the most consistent scorer among the Gems, going 9
of 10 from the field and finishing with a game-high 19 points that
went with his 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Gems, the Group B top seed, also got outstanding efforts from
James Sena (11 points) and Ariel Mepana, who did a good job in taking
away the games of the Wizards’ big men.

They will need a lot of it in the finals.

The NLEX Road Warriors put on a dominating performance in the other
semi-final to smother Max! Bond Super Glue, 74-61, and arrange a title
duel with Cebuana Lhuillier.

Game 1 of the best-of-three series will start on Tuesday at The Arena
in San Juan.

The Road Warriors’ intention of securing their place in the
championship series was never in doubt.

They displayed their A-1 game. They got their offensive rhythm early.
And they punished the Sumos off the boards.

Their spectacular performance effectively put the Road Warriors in
total control by halftime, 43-25.

“Three-fourths of our job is done. Now, we have to prepare for Cebuana
Lhuillier. I think it will be tough series,” said NLEX coach Boyet
Fernandez.

Calvin Abueva scored 19 points, Ronald Pascual had 14 and Eric Salamat
added 11 for the Road Warriors, who outshot and outrebounded their
rivals before slowing down a bit in the fourth.

“I thought we rotated well and did a good job on defense,” said
Cebuana Lhuillier coach Luigi Trillo.

He admitted that PC Gilmore was not as deep as his team but cited the
Wizards downfall to their poor shooting. The Gems enjoyed their
biggest lead at 81-53 on Llagas’ basket with 2:50 remaining in the
game.

“I think their shooters – Carlo Lastimosa, Jett Vidal and Allan
Mangahas – got a lot of good looks. They just didn’t fall.”

As a team, the Gems shot 53 percent (31 of 59). They also dominated
the boards, 50-32, and were unselfish with their 25 assists.

In a game that mattered most, the Wizards played their worst. They
were slow on defense, they allowed themselves to be pushed around and
to make matters even worse, PC Gilmore made just 31 percent (19 of 61)
of its attempts.

The most significant threat encountered by the Gems came in the second
quarter when Vidal (8 points) layup to pull the Wizard within 24-26
with 3:59 left in the period.

But Cebuana Lhuillier quickly responded with 14-3 run to close the
quarter and led 38-29 at the half. Llagas and Allein Maliksi each
scored five points in that spurt and PC Gilmore never got closer then
eight points the rest of the way.

“It’s a humbling experience. It’s nice to be in the finals. But
there’s still job to be done. We can’t underachieve and be happy on
advancing to the finals,” Trillo said.

Jam Cortes and Eric Agas each scored 13 points for PC Gilmore.
Lastimosa, usually among the Wizards’ top scorers, managed just 9
points on 3 of 10 shooting and Mangahas, another marksman, turned in 5
points on 2 of 9 clip.

The scores:
