Nokia D-League to help coaches

Over a hundred local coaches will also benefit from the several workshops during the Nokia National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League that will start December 6, Sunday, at the Jacinto Tiu Gym of the Xavier Sports Center.

NBTC Director Eric Altamirano said it is his personal desire to also help the coaches improve on their skills in the tournament backed by Nokia Pilipinas and TAO Corporation under the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.

“We coaches are always getting requests for workshops at these areas. And the Nokia NBTC allows these coaches to learn and immediately pass on and utilize their skills in a competitive tournament environment,” Altamirano said about the tournament backed by San Miguel Purefoods Company Inc., Smart Communications and Burlington.

B-MEG Feeds will support teams in Manila, Batangas, Pampanga, Baguio, Cebu, Bohol, Cagayan de Oro, Bicol, Davao and Bacolod. Magnolia will back teams from Baguio, Iloilo, Davao and ParaƱaque.

Purefoods-Hormel will be the name for some teams in Pampanga and Batangas while San Mig Coffee joins one team belonging to Pasig/Mandaluyong. Another corporate giant in Smart will be the banner for at least one team in each of the 13 regions as Burlington will carry three teams.

Altamirano said the coaches are trained under a unified and unique format that is inculcated constantly during the practices of the teams until the tournament’s culmination in May.

“This is to ensure that the necessary skills are being taught. The first priority in the Nokia NBTC D-League is always to develop the players for the future,” added Altamirano, who said the practices are to be monitored by NBTC training director Alex Compton.

Practices under the Nokia NBTC environment stress on basketball fundamentals, the repetition of good habits off and on the court and the team game aside from affiliated topics like nutrition.

This is geared towards the tournament’s goal to be a feeder program for varsity squads and teams catering to leagues such as the UAAP, NCAA, Philippine Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association and the Liga Pilipinas.

Coaches expected to benefit from the program are from La Union, Olongapo (under Sen. Richard Gordon), Tarlac, Cavite, Palawan, Butuan, Antipolo, San Juan, Baguio, Pampanga, Batangas, Laguna, Lucena, Bicol, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu, Bohol, Dumaguete, Ormoc, GenSan, Davao, Cagayan, Iligan, Zamboanga, Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan, Marikina, Pasay/Makati/Taguig, Paranaque and Las Pinas/Muntinlupa.

Muslim All-Stars enter finals, begin series with CMO on Friday

The Muslim All-Stars walked through the tightrope before hacking out a 108-99 victory over a tough LTO squad and arrange a best-of-five finale against early finalist CMO which begins on Friday at the Davao City Recreation Center.

At stake is the prestigious Inday Sara Cup offered by Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte and the cash kitty that goes with the champion. Game 1 is set at 5:30 p.m.

Ming Distancia fired 27 points to lead the All-Stars while Modjer Sangsangan added 22 markers as the duo hit timely conversions in the endgame to quell the LTO uprising. High-flying Jerry Caminade led all scorers with 30 and slotman Allan Ardenio contributed 16 for the LTO men who were frustrated in their bid to barge into the finals.

Friday’s championship will be a grudge rematch of the tightly-contested series between the two teams who also locked horns last month in a winner-take-all series won by CMO in three matches.

“We always look forward to meeting the All-Stars because it is always a tough match,” said Christopher “Bong” Go, the Mayor’s executive assistant who will be a marked man the moment he steps into the floor.

Sangsangan and Distancia will be at the forefront of the All-Stars attack while the Mayor’s Men will count on the Triple B connection of Roy Bangkas, Dioven Braga and Ariel Bonleon. (NJB-City Sports)

LAGUNA WINS, FORCES RUBBER MATCH WITH TAGUIG

TAGUIG CITY – The visiting sixth seed Trace-Laguna Stallions forced a winner-take-all game for the last seat in this weekend’s Super Leg by upsetting fifth seed Forward Taguig, 83-79, in their Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Wild Card game Tuesday evening at the C. P. Tinga Memorial Hall.

With their conference on the line, the Stallions of Atty. Erwin Genuino and Coach Nomar banked on the combined 15 fourth period points of guard Alex Angeles and the returning Leo Losentes plus crucial baskets by Alfie Grijaldo to pull off the victory and remain in the hunt for the last remaining seat in next week's Liga SuperLeg National Finals.

With Taguig constantly threatening, Grijaldo, Angeles and Losentes banged in a triple each that erected an 81-74 Stallions advantage with 1:13 to play. Angeles and Losentes then split their separate trips to the free throw each to ensure the win at the 41-second mark. Jeff Sanders settled the final tally with the game’s final five points.

Angeles, RB Mangahas and Ron Capati gave Laguna their biggest lead of the contest, 43-33, early in the third period. Taguig of Mayor Freddie R. Tinga and Coach Bing Victoria slowly closed in, with Michael Gonzales giving them the lead for the first time via a three-point play with 8:16 remaining in the final canto, 58-56.

After a deadlock and four lead changes, Grijaldo followed a Jan Villaver triple with a basket that gave the Stallions the lead for good, 68-67, and 3:59 to play. A good first period worked wonders for the Stallions as Capati and Rob Sanz quickly found their scoring touch for a 19-14 advantage.

“Cebu City, we’re getting there,” said an exhausted Coach Isla. “After the Apayao Leg, we held team meetings and the team vowed to work very hard at practice as we prepared for Taguig.” Taguig’s twice-to-beat advantage is now history and both coaches have less than 24 hours to make adjustments for the rubber match to be held still at Tinga Hall.

Angeles had a good all-around game with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists in 34 minutes of play. Sanz followed with 12 points. Sanders paced Taguig with 22 points while Nino Marquez chipped in 14.

The five-team Super Leg is scheduled for November 22 to 29 at the New Cebu Coliseum and will determine the next Liga Pilipinas National Champion. Already earning their tickets are the undefeated M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos, Smart-Pampanga Buddies, Quezon Red Oilers and the defending National Champion Misamis Oriental Meteors.

The Liga Pilipinas Wild Card games and the whole Super Leg will be aired on Solar Sports starting next week. Liga Pilipinas Classics are also seen daily on Viva Prime Channel. RMG, CMO nail second win in AFP-PNP caging

Defending champion Regional Mobile Group and chief rival City Mayor's Office demolished their respective foes on Saturday for their second win in as many outings to stay on top in the Mayor Rody and Inday Sara 7th PNP-AFP basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.

RMG turned back BJMP 104-83 to keep track with the Mayor's Men who were again devastating in blasting the visiting Compostela Valley Police Provincial Office 113-91.

CMO relied on a balanced offensive anchored on the sweet-shooting guard Bong Go and the emerging “Triple B” troika of Roy Bangkas, Ariel Bonleon and big man Dioven Braga. Already a marked man in every outing for his torrid shooting, Go has developed a new arsenal—a running tear drop off a fake from his favorite spot beyond the arc, or pass off to an open teammate. This was evident in their first two games as Go has scored a little less than usual, 25 against ComVal, but his teammates were left open a lot often. The Triple B connection of Bangkas, Bonleon and Braga combined for 34.

Ike Estampa led ComVal with 17 markers in a losing effort.

In other games, Philippine Air Force (1-0) dealt Coast Guard is second straight setback 83-77, PNP-National Support Unit (1-0) defeated Philippine Navy (0-1) 73-69, and Bureau of Fire (1-1) upset DCPO 90-86 (1-1).

Being the tenth and final leg of the conference’s tour phase, the games hold great significance for the Stallions, Buddies and Landmaster as they are bunched from Fifth to Seventh Place with 23, 21 and 13 tour points respectively.

The Stallions and Buddies are shooting for nothing less than the leg championship in order to claim the second outright spot in the five-team Super Leg later this month that will determine the next National Champion. For the expansion Landmaster quintet, winning the championship will push them up the standings and may reward them with a twice-to-beat advantage in the Super Leg qualifiers.

The undefeated M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos formalized their claim on the top spot by ruling the Zamboanga City Leg last weekend, finishing with the maximum 60 points. Trailing the Ninos in the standings are the Quezon Red Oilers (35), defending National Champion Misamis Oriental Meteors (33) and Forward Taguig (32). The MP Warriors of GenSan are fixed at Eighth Place with eight points.

Expected to play important roles for the Rapids are shooters Ismael Junio and Leimar Navarro and big men Nat Cruz and Lawrence Bonus. The Rapids are on a roll after registering the franchise’s first Liga victories, both at the expense of the eliminated Zamboanga Uno Latinos, 100-77 and 105-84, en route to taking Third Place in the Zamboanga City Leg.

On the part of the Buddies of Coach Allan Gregorio, they will be bannered by veteran guard Nino Gelig, centers Ford Arao and Al Magpayo and shooter Alan Husted, a recent find from San Diego, California.

Selected games from the Apayao Leg will be aired next week on Solar Sports from Wednesday to Saturday. Liga Pilipinas Classics are seen daily over Viva Prime Channel. For more information, visit www.ligapilipinas.net.

CMO downs Pagcor 87-75 for win no. 5

League-leading City Mayor's Office got a scare on Halloween but still fashioned out a methodical 87-75 win over a stubborn Pagcor crew to notch its fifth win in as many games in the year-ending Inday Sara Cup basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym.

The Halloween win came after Pagcor, which played for the first time in the tourney, stood its ground against the marauding Mayor's Men before giving up its tough stand in the wake of a final juggernaut by CMO.

Liga Zamboanga Day Four

Games Wednesday (November 4) – Apayao

4:00 PM Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue vs. Smart Pampanga Buddies

6:00 PM EKB-Apayao Rapids vs. Trace-Laguna Stallions

NINOS ACHIEVE "GOLDEN 60", WIN 4TH STRAIGHT LEG TITLE

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Golden perfection! The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos became the first team to achieve a clean sweep of all their touring games after they halted defending National Champion Misamis Oriental Meteors, 91-81, for the championship of the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Zamboanga City Leg Saturday night at the Summit Centre of the Universidad de Zamboanga.

The Ninos of Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba won all their 16 games in the elimination phase to finish with 60 out of a possible 60 points and grab the undisputed top seeding entering the Super Leg later this month that will crown the next National Champion of the league made possible by Smart, Molten, Accel, Calcium-Cee, Gatorade, Air 21 and Burlington and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

Limited to only an average of four points in the preliminary round, power forward Ariel Mepana exploded for 19 points off the bench to lead the Ninos. Mark Magsumbol added 16 points in his best performance as a Nino. Eder Saldua fired 28 points for the Meteors but designated shooter Patrick Cabahug was limited to only 13 points after averaging 23.3 points in their first three outings.

"More than the record its good to know that the team is so motivated and determined to bring back the crown to our fans in Cebu. Our four legs will mean nothing however if we don't bring our game to the National Finals. But we'll savor this feeling first. " said Coach Alcoseba

The Ninos will now await the identity of the second outright qualifier plus the three wild cards. The Meteors of Gov. Oscar S. Moreno and Coach Jun Noel earned five points for placing second and finished with 33 total points, enough to push them to Third Place past Forward Taguig that has 32 points. The Quezon Red Oilers currently occupy Second Place with 35 points as they await the results of the final leg this week in Apayao.

The Third to Fifth Placers will be paired with the Sixth to Eight Placers in three separate series with the higher-ranked team enjoying the twice-to-beat and home court advantage. The three series winners advance to the Super Leg with the two outright qualifiers.

Meanwhile, the EKB-Apayao Rapids of Gov. Elias K. Bulut went home with Third Place after rallying from 21 points down and repeating over the host Zamboanga Uno Latinos, 105-84. The Rapids thus registered back-to-back wins and gives them good momentum as they prepare to host the final leg starting this Wednesday when they welcome the Trace-Laguna Stallions, Smart-Pampanga Buddies and Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue.

The loss caused the Latinos to miss the playoffs for the third straight conference with only six points and one win in 16 games. The MP Warriors of GenSan thus claimed the eighth and final playoff seat with eight points. The Latinos remained winless at home, dropping all 13 games since last year.

Ismael Junio led the Rapids with 23 points followed by Leimar Navarro with 15. Jayson Rebollos paced the Latinos with 25 points while Charleston Bolias added 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Selected games from the Zamboanga City Leg will be aired next week on Solar Sports from Wednesday to Saturday. Also, Liga Pilipinas Classics are seen daily over Viva Prime Channel. For more details, visit www.ligapilipinas.net.

CEBU NINOS SWEEP ZAMBO LEG ELIMS, GUN FOR 4TH TITLE

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos continued their undefeated run by stopping the defending National Champion Misamis Oriental Meteors, 78-73, in a preview of the championship game of the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Zamboanga City Leg Friday evening at the Summit Centre of the Universidad de Zamboanga.

With the win, the team of Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba remained undefeated in all their 15 games thus far in the conference backed by Smart, Molten, Accel, Calcium-Cee, Gatorade, Air 21 and Burlington and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). They will pick up a two-point bonus for sweeping all their three preliminary games in the leg if they win their 4th straight leg title and achieve the rare "golden 60" or a perfect elims record.

After winning their Wednesday and Thursday games via routs, the Ninos and Meteors finally faced an acid test in each other as they battled through nine deadlocks, the last being at 71 with 1:45 remaining.

The Ninos outsteadied the Meteors as Mark Ababon hit a big three point shot and big man Frank Nailon made crucial free throws to seal the win.

Nailon, who played for the Meteors in Conference I last year, came off the bench and produced 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Ninos. Mark Ababon followed with 16 points. Patrick Cabahug paced the Meteors with 23 points followed by Eder Saldua with 21. However, the rest of the Meteors struggled, unable to back up their two gunners.

The Meteors of Gov. Oscar S. The Latinos have one last chance to snatch the last playoff berth for the Super Leg should defeat the Rapids in the Third Place game. The MP Warriors of GenSan currently hold Eighth Place with eight points compared to the Latinos’ five points.

Nat Cruz played his best game as a Rapid with 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists off the bench. Starter Leimar Navarro supported him with 17 points in only 15 minutes of play. Charleston Bolias topped the Latinos with 21 points and eight rebounds followed by Jayson Rebollos with 15.

NINOS, METEORS CRUISE TO 2ND STRAIGHT WIN

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Liga Pilipinas’ centerpiece rivalry will add another chapter after the defending National Champion Misamis Oriental Meteors and former champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos crushed separate opponents Thursday evening to arrange a titular showdown for the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Zamboanga City Leg at the Summit Centre of the Universidad de Zamboanga.

Improving to similar and unreachable 2-0 win-loss cards, both teams will dispute the title tonight starting at 6:00 PM. Host Zamboanga Uno Latinos and the EKB-Apayao Rapids will play for Third Place at 4:00 PM.

The Meteors of Gov. Oscar S. Moreno and Coach Jun Noel punished the Latinos in the main game, 122-77, and remained in the hunt for the second automatic seat in November’s Super Leg that will crown the next National Champion of the league backed by Smart, Accel, Molten, Calcium-Cee, Gatorade, Air 21 and Burlington and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

Melvin Mamaclay topped the Meteors with 24 points and 10 rebounds followed by Patrick Cabahug with 21 points off five triples. The reliable duo of Christopher Concepcion and Charleston Bolias again led the Latinos with 24 and 14 markers respectively but lacked support from the rest of the team.

Meanwhile, the Ninos of Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba stretched their undefeated card to 14-0 by punishing the Rapids of Gov. Elias K. Bulut, 107-72.

“We want to enter the Super Leg on a positive note,” declared Coach Alcoseba. “Our goal is to bring back the National Championship to Cebu.” The Ninos were crowned the very first Liga Pilipinas National Champions on September 18, 2008 after they swept Taguig in the best-of-three series, 3-0

The same players from Wednesday’s 123-97 thrashing of the host Latinos reprised their roles with Ian Saladaga powering the blowout with 18 points and four assists. Stephen Padilla added 13 as six other Ninos submitted at least eight markers in a balanced attack. Leimar Navarro paced the Rapids with 12 points. Gester Ebuen recovered from a scoreless outing against the Meteors the other day by knocking in 11 points.

PBA RENDERS GILAS GAMES NO BEARING

Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Sonny Barrios wrote the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas yesterday regarding the participation of the Smart Gilas National Team in the ongoing 2009-10 KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.

Barrios said the Board directed him to choose only between two options: 1) for Smart Gilas games to have no bearing even on PBA teams, and 2) for Smart Gilas not to play CJ Giles in any of its remaining games that will have a bearing on the PBA teams.

Since the main objective of Smart Gilas participation as guest team is to help the Nationals prepare for upcoming international tournament, Barrios leaned toward rendering the games of Smart Gilas no bearing instead of barring Giles from playing.

“We recognize that CJ Giles is a very vital part of the national team, the reason why he is considered as a candidate for naturalization for Filipino citizen.

“He is seen as the “good big man” the country sorely lacks to be able to compete with the powerhouse teams in Asia today. It will not help the team’s cause any if Giles is not allowed to play with the team,” Barrios explained.

In his letter to Noli Eala, executive director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Barrios said the decision is deemed to well serve the purpose of the Smart Gilas, seeing action in the league as guest team.

“We are convinced that it is in everyone’s best interest if both teams go into the game with the same mindset that the game has no bearing. Both Smart Gilas and the PBA opposing team, and their players, will thus be on equal footing as far as their outlook and approach of the game are concerned,” Barrios said.

That means the result of games payaed by Burger King, Talk N’ Text and Barangay Ginebra against Smart Gilas prior to the passing of the new directive are considered nullified and will not reflect in their win-loss record.

Apparently, the decision to bench CJ Giles for most part of the game between Smart Gilas and Talk N’ Text last October 21, 2009 prompted PBA Board of Governors to revisit their earlier commitment with SBP and eventually supersede it with the new directive. Talk N’ Text won that game by a blowout, 103-70.

The present situation where the results count only for PBA teams has, apparently, also become a cause for concern for PBA coach and players alike.

“Some players have pointed out that the different treatment almost always means a difference in the level of intensity that may give rise to physical play and unwanted incidents,” Barrios said.

Barrios also took into account the observation of Barangay Guinebra coach Jong Uichico, himself a former national mentor.

Following Ginebra’s 100-72 win against Smart Gilas, Uichico was quoted in the papers as saying: “It is unfortunate that the PBA teams play the National Team always looking to win.”

The coach of the 2002 Busan Games RP Team added that “the best way to help the RP team is to take away the “we have to win attitude” and give the PBA teams the opportunity to simulate the patterns of the clubs that RP Team will be facing in international tournaments.”

Barrios dispeled concerns by the SBP that the PBA teams would not take the games seriously now that its has no bearing.

“Just like that you assured us Smart Gilas will be prepared to play every game competitively and passionately, we also guarantee that that our PBA teams will give the national teams the competition they need to toughen up for the bigger hardcourt wars ahead.”

METEORS, NINOS WIN AS LIGA ZAMBO LEG BEGINS

ZAMBOANGA CITY – There may be two more legs to play before the elimination phase ends and a wildcard round to settle but with the way the Misor Meteors and Cebu Ninos are playing, it looks like they are on a collission course for a rematch of last conference's National Finals.

The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos tallied to their 13th straight victory in as many games by whipping the host Zamboanga Uno Latinos while the defending national champions Misor Meteors coasted to an easy win against expansion Apayao Rapids to begin action at the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Zamboanga City Leg at the Zamboanga City Coliseum Wednesday night.

Cebu toyed with the smaller Latinos and engineered a flawless 123-97 rout of host Zamboanga behind the 29 points of Stephen Padilla to remain perfect in their leg assignments. The Latinos need to finish at least in Third Place in this their final leg assignment in order to make the playoffs for seats in next month’s Super Leg that will determine the next National Champion of the conference supported by Smart, Molten, Accel, Calcium-Cee, Gatorade, Air 21 and Burlington and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). The Ninos of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba are assured of an outright berth and are gunning for the rare "golden 60" or a perfect record in their four legs should they sweep in Zamboanga.

In the first game, the defending National Champion Misamis Oriental Meteors of Gov. Oscar S. Moreno fueled their hopes of gaining an outright Super Leg seat with a 95-64 dumping of the EKB-Apayao Rapids of Gov. Elias K. Bulut. Patrick Cabahug top scored with 28 markers.

The Meteors under Coach Jun Noel flexed the same deadly form that made them win the tough Second China-ASEAN Invitational last week in Guangxi Zhuang, China where they represented the Philippines and defended the crown won by Smart Gilas last year.

“The China trip raised the players’ individual confidence and bonded the team closer,” said Coach Noel. “We learned a lot playing against taller opponents and our outside shooters clicked well.”

The Meteors need to work extra hard tonight when they face their perennial archrival Ninos today at 4:00 PM at the close of the preliminary round. In the main game, the Latinos will meet the Rapids starting at 6:00 PM. The two best teams will meet in Saturday’s one-game leg championship.

RED OILERS ANNEX MANDAUE LEG, CLIMB TO 2ND PLACE OVERALL

MANDAUE CITY – The Quezon Red Oilers bagged their second straight leg championship in the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III by thumping Forward Taguig, 85-74, in the finale of the Mandaue City Leg Saturday night at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center. The victory boosted the chances of the Red Oilers in getting one of the two automatic slots in the Superleg National Finals next month.

Luis Palaganas and Angelus Raymundo led another balanced attack of the Red Oilers as they ended their four leg elimination phase with 35 Liga Tour points on the strength of their 12 point harvest in the Mandaue leg.

“Good thing the game turned up-tempo and that’s our forte,” explained winning coach Oliver Bunyi. “Again, this is dedicated to Gov. Nantes and the people of Quezon.” The Red Oilers annexed the General Santos City Leg two weeks ago.

For his overall play all week, starting forward Luis Palaganas was named as the leg’s MVP with averages of 14.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals.

Taguig which was hoping to better their runner up finish in the Laguna leg fell short anew as they settled for 7 points to jack up their Tour points total to 32 or good for third place. Teams ranked from third to fifth after the elimination phase will gain a twice to beat advantage in the wildcard round that will determine the three qualifiers that will join the two automatic Superleg finalists. The Cebu Ninos by virtue of their perfect record in the elims so far are assured of the top seeding in the Superleg National Finals with 45 points.

Idle defending National Champion Misor Meteors is in fourth spot with 26 points and has an outside chance of gaining an outright berth if they can win their last leg.

In the battle for Third Place, host Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue staged a mighty comeback in the final two minutes to overturn a five-point deficit and still prevail over the Zamboanga Uno Latinos, 105-101.

Liga Pilipinas action resumes on October 28 with the Latinos hosting the defending National Champion Misamis Oriental Meteors, M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos and guest team EKB-Apayao Rapids.

Choice games from the Mandaue City Leg will be televised next week on Solar Sports from Wednesday to Saturday. Liga Pilipinas Classics are seen daily on Viva Prime Channel. For more information, visit www.ligapilipinas.net.
