MisOr squares off with Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware in Game 2 at Xavier U in Cagayan

MisOr squres off with Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware in Game 2 at Xavier U in Cagayan

Game on November 22 – Xavier University Gym
6:00PM Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr vs. Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware

CAGAYAN DE ORO – Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr shoots for a spot in the Mindanao Division Finals of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference on Thursday night, November 22, when they host the Goldstar Hardware Duterte Agilas-Davao at the Xavier University Gym starting at 6:00PM.

MisOr of MVBA chairman Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Bong Abad took Game One of the best-of-three series, 92-84, at the Almendras Gym in Davao City last November 19. A tall order faces the Agilas of Coach Rhoel Josol, as they have yet to defeat MisOr this conference, losing their two classification round meetings, 89-100 and 82-87.

Bull strong Boboy Berami has been the best performer for the Agilas this conference churning out 15.6 points per game and on his broad shoulders rests the fate of the franchise. The rest of the team have to help out Berami, especially gunners Jonjon Gonzaga (11.3 ppg) and Fred Sampilo (9.8 ppg) and playmaker Bob Cozy Ilanga (9.8 ppg).

However, the X-factor for the Agilas could be the good play of Wynsjohn Te and center James Razon. The duo submitted MVBA career-highs in points in Game One, giving the team more options in Game Two and extend the series to a Game Three scheduled for on Friday, November 23 also at the Xavier Gym.

Reigning MVBA Player of the Week Anton Villoria will again lead MisOr’s defense of its home turf. In MisOr’s last two games against the Agilas, Villoria proved to be the biggest thorn on the wings of the Agilas, knocking in the killer shots en route to averaging 15.0 points in those two games.

Also seen to play big roles and take MisOr to its third straight Mindanao Division finals appearance are centers Nathaniel Cruz (12.8 ppg) and Frank Nailon (8.5 ppg), shooter Lowell Briones (9.2 ppg) and point guard Mark Moreño (7.7 ppg).

Already earning outright berths in the Division Finals by virtue of topping their respective divisions are M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba and the MP Warriors-GenSan of Manny Pacquiao and Coach Ramon Pido.

They will face the winner of their division’s semifinal series in a best-of-three showdown. The two division champions will then slug it out in the best-of-three MVBA Finals tentatively calendared for the first week of December.(Anthony E. Servinio)

Arthro vs. Landmaster in Cebu, MisOr vs. Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware in Cagayan de Oro

Game on November 21 – New Cebu Coliseum
5:30PM Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu vs.Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue

Game Thursday (November 22) – Xavier University Gym
6:00PM Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr vs. Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware

CEBU CITY – Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu hopes to continue defying the odds in Game Two of the Visayas Division Semifinals of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference against Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue on Wednesday night (November 21) at the New Cebu Coliseum.

Arthro of sports patron Jonathan “Atan” Guardo and Coach Al Solis shocked Landmaster, 81-74, in Game One last November 16 at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center. In the said game, Arthro bucked the absence of key players Rino Berame and Michael Luga, who both traveled to Manila with the University of the Visayas varsity.

Doroteo Almacin had a monster game with 23 points and got more than enough support from fellow gunners Alex Cainglet and Mark Ababon with 16 apiece to key the win and take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series and the chance to wrap it up tonight.

It is still undetermined if Berame, Luga and Coach Solis will fly back to Cebu in time for the game as their commitments in Manila have yet to be finished. That being the case, Coach Solis will have to entrust the coaching reins to his battery of assistant coaches.

Landmaster of Joe Soberano, Mayor Jonas Cortes and Coach Jun Tan faces a must-win situation in order to avoid missing the Visayas Division Finals for the first time in their history of participation in the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball. Landmaster made both Visayas finales last season. The franchise took a leave during the 2007 First Conference.

With Arthro’s frontline decimated, this will be the chance for Christian Nicdao, Mark Yee, Jan Montalbo and Rex Mangubat to flourish. While Arthro has shifted to its guards for firepower, Landmaster can counter that with veterans Mike Manigo, Bong Marata, Jimwell Torion, Aries Gloria and Aldrin Ocanada.

Both sides split their classification round assignments, with the home team winning. Arthro took the first meeting last September 24, 93-81, while Landmaster recovered to win the second meeting last October 16, 83-70.

The winner of the Landmaster-Arthro series will challenge M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City in the best-of-three Visayas Division Finals.

Over in the Mindanao Division, Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr holds a 1-0 lead over the Goldstar Hardware-backed Duterte Agilas-Davao. Game Two is set for Thursday, November 22, at the Xavier University Gym.

Villoria is MVBA Player of the Week

Anton Villoria of Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr became the first player from the Mindanao Division to be named as the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Player of the Week. The citation covers games played from November 13 to 19.

Villoria averaged a team-best 12.7 points in their three outings, all played on the road. He played his best in the last two games against the Goldstar Hardware Duterte Agilas.

In the first game held November 18, the Carcar City native exploded for 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, including the triple that tied the game at 80-80 and the ensuing steal that led to an easy lay-up that gave MisOr the lead for good, 82-80. Final score was 87-82 in favor of MisOr, their fourth win in ten games to close out the classification round.

Less than 24 hours later, Villoria and his teammates regrouped to take Game One of the Mindanao Division Semifinals, 92-84. This time, Villoria again punished the Agilas with 10 of his 12 markers in the final period. It was deja vu as he again pumped in the points that matters most, especially the triple at the 3:56 mark that restored the upper hand to MisOr for good.

In MisOr's first game this week, Villoria had eight points as MisOr clinched the home court advantage in the series by beating the MP Warriors-GenSan in Koronadal City, 78-57.

Villoria played varsity ball at Letran College in Manila. That paved the way for him to be noticed en route to a pro ball career with Red Bull, San Miguel and Talk N Text. He found his way to MisOr in the MVBA's inaugural season last year, not as a player but as an assistant coach.

Already considered semi-retired, Villoria resolved to get himself into shape and his efforts were rewarded as he was finally reactivated as a player earlier this year and eventually playing a key role in MisOr's annexation of the 2007 MVBA First Conference.

Other players nominated for the weekly plum include MisOr's Nathaniel Cruz and Mark Moreño and last week's winner Doroteo Almacin of Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu.

Aside from Almacin, other players who have went home with the award include Mark Yee, Mike Manigo and Bong Marata of Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue and Bruce Dacia, Ronald Capati and Marlon Basco of M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City. Marata and Basco shared their award.(Anthony Servinio)

Misamis Oriental wins Game 1 against Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware, 92-84

Leading by three points, 74-71 with four minutes and 38 seconds remaining, the Agilas-Goldstar could not stop the efforts made by Ramil Tagupa, Anton Villoria, Lowell Briones who were responsible for the 10-0 run to give Misamis Oriental back the lead, 82-74.
Eleazer Berami came back to the game and made two free throw shots, 76-82 but after that Tagupa, Briones and Frank Nailon kept on scoring to disappoint the Agilas-Goldstar fans.

Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware, MisOr clash in MVBA Mindanao Wild Card Round

Game Today (November 19) – Almendras Gym
6:00PM Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware vs. Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr

DAVAO CITY – Playoff action in the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) hits high gear as the Goldstar Hardware-sponsored Duterte Agilas-Davao hosts Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr tonight in Game One of their Mindanao Division Wild Card best-of-three series at the Almendras Gym.

Both teams had a preview of each other last night (November 18) in a match that completed the 30-game classification round schedule of the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and bankrolled by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball. The results were pending at press time. Regardless, it would not have an effect on the final playoff positions.

MisOr currently holds a 3-6 win-loss card while the Agilas are at 1-8.

MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno will host Game Two on November 21 at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro. If needed, Game Three will be played immediately the next day, still at the Xavier Gym. The wild card series winner will go on to face the idle MP Warriors-GenSan in the best-of-three Mindanao Division Finals. The Warriors of boxing idol Manny Pacquiao topped the Mindanao Division with an even 5-5 win-loss card.

In their first meeting this conference held last October 8, MisOr pulverized the Agilas at the Xavier Gym, 100-89. Nat Cruz exploded for 24 points and Mark Apepe added 14. The Agilas drew 17 markers each from Boboy Berami, Greggy Delica and Jonjon Gonzaga.

A lot has happened since then but the above mentioned players are expected to reprise their stellar roles tonight. Winning Game One of a best-of-three series gives the winner an immense advantage.

Agilas coach Rhoel Josol can also bank on the likes of Fred Sampilo, Bob Cozy Ilanga and Wynsjohn Te for offensive punch as they start their uphill fight. The burly Berami is expected to join twin towers James Razon and Joel Solis in battling MisOr's tall front line.

The 6'5” Cruz remains MisOr's top scorer and rebounder. Coach Bong Abad has kept veterans Lowell Briones and Anton Villoria as the team's leaders and has drawn improved plays recently from guard Mark Moreño and 2007 First Conference MVP Frank Nailon.

Over in the Visayas Division, Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu bucked the absence of key players to upset Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue, 81-74, in Game One of their Wild Card Series at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center last November 16. Game Two of that series is tentatively set for November 22 at the New Cebu Coliseum with Arthro of Jonathan Guardo and Coach Al Solis in the position of securing a date with league topnotcher M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City (8-2) for the Visayas Division crown. Landmaster must sweep the next two games to advance.

The champions of Visayas and Mindanao Divisions will clash in the best-of-three MVBA Finals set for the first week of December.(Anthony E. Servinio)

KORONADAL CITY - Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr clinched the home court advantage in the Mindanao Division Wild Card Round of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference with an inspiring 78-57 thumping of Mindanao Division leader MP Warriors-GenSan at the South Cotabato Gym and Cultural Center.

MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Bong Abad will play the Goldstar Hardware-backed Duterte Agilas-Davao on Monday, November 19 in Game One of their best-of-three series at the Davao City Recreation Center (formerly Almendras gym). The series shifts to the Xavier University Gym on Wednesday, November 21 and if need on Thursday, November 22.

The Agilas and MisOr will be completing a no-bearing game on Sunday night, November 18 in the final game of the 30-game classification round schedule at the DCRC.

Over in Mandaue City, an undermanned Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu pulled off an 81-74 shocker and stole the home court advantage from Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center in Game One of the Visayas Division Wild Card Round.
Landmaster was on top by two with three minutes left to play when Alex Cainglet hit a triple to give Arthro the lead for good. From there, Landmaster simply collapsed. Game Two is tentatively set for November 22 at the New Cebu Coliseum. Landmaster faces the big task of sweeping the next two games in order to advance further in the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

Arthro played sans big men Rino Berame and Michael Luga who had to travel to Manila with the University of the Visayas Lancers. Coach Al Solis though stayed behind and masterfully steered his crew to the win. Cainglet himself was banished from the game on fouls with a minute to play but Arthro held off Landmaster's repeated attempts to rally. Arthro outscored Landmaster in the final period, 21-14, after a 60-60 standoff after three quarters.

Reigning MVBA Player of the Week Doroteo Almacin lived up to his billing by scattering 23 points followed by Cainglet and Mark Ababon with 16 each. Richard Ian Saladaga paced Landmaster with 18 while the trio of Bong Marata, Rex Mangubat and Mark Yee combined for 33 points.

Despite the lopsided score, the day belong to the Warriors' playing team owner Manny Pacquiao. The boxing superstar scored an MVBA career-high four points on top of two assists, a rebound and a foul in 18 minutes of action as his team's starting point guard. MisOr took the first period, 18-15, and never looked back. MisOr led by as much as 22 markers, the last time at 72-50, on a Mark Moreño basket with 4:52 remaining.

Moreño led MisOr with three triples en route to 14 points. Jerome Numeran followed with 11 and Rocky Sanchez with 10. The Warriors were topped by big men Erian Daja with 13 and Rolly Menor with 11.

Game on November 18 – Almendras Gym6:00PM Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware vs. Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr

KORONADAL CITY – The MP Warriors-GenSan clinched an outright berth in the Mindanao Division Finals of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference with a hard-earned win over the gritty Goldstar Hardware-supported Duterte Agilas-Davao, 90-84, last Thursday (November 15) at the South Cotabato Gym and Cultural Center.

The Warriors of boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao and Coach Ramon Pido repeated their mastery over the Agilas of Coach Rhoel Josol, who they defeated last November 13 at the Almendras Gym, 91-80.

The Warriors rose to 5-4, thus snuffing the chances of Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr.

MisOr (2-6) was playing the Warriors at press time last night and was praying for a Warriors defeat in order to catch up in the standings of the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and generously supported by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

The Warriors took their biggest lead of the game, 59-47, on a basket by Roderick Ramos midway through the third quarter. Suddenly, the Agilas awoke with Bob Cozy Ilanga leading a 12-5 run to start the final quarter capped by a Boboy Berami stab that brought the Agilas to their closest, 73-75, and 4:45 on the clock.

In the ensuing play, grizzled veteran Jomer Rubi played fireman by sinking a triple, 78-73. The Agilas then failed to score a field goal, forcing them to give up fouls to buy time. Despite another triple from Ilanga with a minute to play, 78-84, the Warriors countered with Rubi and Louie Medalla shooting well from the free throw line to preserve the win.

The Agilas had a good start, taking the first period, 20-18, with Berami hitting 10 markers. Then just like in their first meeting, Warrior Apol Coronado exploded in the second canto, clustering six unanswered points to erase a 28-32 deficit and give his side the lead for good, 34-32. Halftime was pegged at 44-37.

Jeffy Locsin scored a personal conference-high of 14 points to lead the Warriors followed by Medalla and Donald Tadena with 10 each. Berami topped the Agilas with 20 points while Fred Sampilo added 14 and Ilanga 13.

In the final game of the 30-game classification round, the Agilas face MisOr on November 18 at the Almendras Gym starting at 6:00PM. The game could decide who among the two teams will hold the precious home court advantage in the best-of-three Mindanao Division Wildcard round set to begin on either November 19 or 20.

MisOr subdued the Agilas in their first meeting, 100-89, at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro last October 8.

The MP Warriors exploited their hosts' loose defense to slowly build the lead from 10 points, 57-47, 2:43 remaining to 20 points, 67-47 at the end of the third quarter.

There was no threat from the outside by the Agilas-Goldstar and Melfred Sampilo, the shooter recruited from the Ozamiz Cotta, went back only to the game with two minutes and 13 seconds remaining in th fourth quarter to replace John Gonzaga.

6:00PM Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware vs. MP Warriors-GenSan

DAVAO CITY – Valuable playoff position in the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference is at stake on Tuesday night, November 13, when the Goldstar Hardware-backed Duterte Agilas-Davao hosts the MP Warriors-GenSan at the Almendras Gym starting at 6:00PM.

Only two games separate Tuesday night's protagonists, with the Warriors of boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao leading the Mindanao Division with a 3-4 win-loss card. The Agilas are at 1-6 while idle Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno is a game ahead of them at 2-5. MisOr was playing Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu at press time last night at the Xavier University Gym.

Buoyed by tallying their first ever MVBA franchise win in their last outing against Arthro, 85-83, the Agilas now aim for their first winning streak. Against Arthro, Coach Rhoel Josol drew great games from scoring machines Fred Sampilo, Bob Cozy Ilanga and Jonjon Gonzaga while burly Boboy Berami combined with twin towers James Razon and Joel Solis in dominating the inside on both ends of the floor.

On the other hand, MisOr is recovering from its recent road trip of the Visayas Division that ended last Wednesday (November 7) where they lost all three games. Expect Coach Bong Abad to try new combinations with big men Frank Nailon and Randy Sevilla and guards Ramil Tagupa and Rocky Sanchez who were all revelations in the said trip. Team leaders Lowell Briones and Anton Villoria will continue to assert their veteran presence. Another key for MisOr is the health of leading scorer Nathaniel Cruz, who sat out two of their last three road games due to a back injury.

All three Mindanao Division squads are expected to give it their all in the final week of the 30-game classification stage. The balance of the schedule involves the three teams playing amongst themselves so a single win can greatly alter the rankings.

The top teams in each division will earn a bye into the best-of-three division finals. The remaining two teams will slug it out in a separate best-of-three wildcard series with the winner advancing to the division finals.

The Visayas and Mindanao Division champions will meet in another best-of-three affair for the championship of the tournament sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

This early, the Visayas Division picture is clear with M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City getting the outright division finals berth. Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue finished with the same record as M. Lhuillier but lost in the tiebreak thus setting a date with Arthro in the Visayas Division wildcard round starting on November 16 at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center.(Anthony Servinio)
